From the binary msg: "Our mother will let you pass. JCC 1999". Suspect the PW will be some combo of V's grandmother's name, Cynthia Phanes Cardui or her DOB (29 Jul 1923).

Not a lot happening today. Some more chess references, some new versions of the photos that I can't see half of but otherwise nothing.

Pictures
Sent from Vanessa

Hi, was in touch with Vanessa, she sent me these by email from the Library as her computer was borked, was having trouble uploading them to anywhere, realized they didn't need to be at 1200 dpi.... changed 300 dpi

Original. If you want the larger version I'll have to uh... work something out.
OK, curves, and rotation gives us this:

Vlad and I have been in contact.
I'm feeding him a little information - but it's edited. It's not the full thing.
I'm trying to get him to trust me a bit, and I'm trying to make him think I'll be willing to give up what he wants over time.

Here's the conversation.

Quote:
Vladimir

"iwth lal fo htat"

Good evening James - are you well in the place you are [which is?]

?
7:12pmJames

'with all of that'? Also, Could be better - It's fucking December and I'm still sweating my ass off when I go outside.

I'm in southern Florida, so, we don't exactly get 'winter' as one of our seasons.
7:13pmVladimir

In London right now it is colder. Much
7:13pmJames

Yeah, I figured by V's messages about needing a new coat.
7:13pmVladimir

Sorry. when it is very cold some of my fingers cramp. I am not as young as I used to be so apologies if punctuation is missed.

She seemed to have gained more than borrowed robes though eh? smiles
7:14pmJames

It's fine. So long as it's understandable. You should seethe way some of these kids type these days. Also, borrowed robes? Another Alice reference?
7:14pmVladimir

Has any more pictures appeared wherever our young friend is?

I have done. I have waited for a long time. Borrowed robes? You have not red Shakespeare then?
7:16pmJames

I'm not a big Shakespeare fan, to be honest. I thought it was a reference to Hatter giving Alice a jacket/robes/what ever it was. (though that's probably only in the most modern adaptation.)
7:16pmVladimir

http://www.enotes.com/macbeth/q-and-a/explain-metaphor-quot-why-do-you-dress-me-borrowed-59189
7:17pmJames

As for the pictures - yes. 'new' pictures, no. There were quite a few entries for pictures where they're being kept, but, most of them were 'broken' as in they don't load at all. V doesn't seem to be very good with computers. There were two rescans of existing pictures. One where you can see the math equation on the map, another was the 'decryption sheet' (as I'm refering to it as.) with a little more detail (color correction and such.)
7:17pmVladimir

Something to help you in future is this site. When I was an English teacher, in years gone by, students had a duty to know at least five plays by the bard. How times change...
7:19pmVladimir

There was a 'math equation' on a map? Please tell me what it was, I am quite good with logic.
7:19pmJames

In Florida, we have a state wide test called the FCAT. In our public schools, that's all they teach for the most part. Everything is 'here's how to pass the FCAT' hidden in the context of literature. Times have changed, sad I couldn't have been born ten years earlier. Any way, the equation.. lemme find where I wrote it down.

It seems to be useless at the moment - by the way. As there's nothing stating what the variable in it is.

" C - m = m+56 "
7:20pmVladimir

Two unknowns.
7:20pmJames

Yep.

There was a note above it, though

may be useful.

Well, more like quick calculations.

something crossed out. looks like M=. Then under it 10+4, under that it's (4x14), that gives the 56 in the equation.
7:22pmVladimir

Whose hand were they in? Colour ink?
7:22pmJames

No clue who's hand writing. I'm not good with writing. Shit - I can hardly read cursive script. Any way, it's in red.
7:23pmVladimir

Looking then for a break down of 56 into those numbers. That may be more essential than you realise.

56, 56, 56....

Right James. I am going to trust you with something but I need you to trust me as well.
7:24pmJames

Well, I don't trust easily.
7:24pmVladimir

I need that a copy of that calculation written down properly. In return, I will tell you the answer to the equation [ar at least one answer].
7:24pmJames

You see - I've been giving you what I feel i can trust, because it's not the full deal. I'm not sending the stuff like the decryption sheet - not yet

Hm..

Well

How about this.

I've cropped out the equation. I'll send you it.

But not the rest of the map.

Not yet.

You probably figured it, but I'm still trying to judge just how much I can trust you.
7:26pmVladimir

Fine.
7:27pmJames

Sorry, just, with how serious things seem, I think it's best to go in slowly.
7:27pmVladimir

And that is why I am talking to you James. I can trust in your sense of judgement.
7:28pmJames

Here's the equation. Theres some sort of note under it, but it looks like it didn't scan correctly - as bits appear to be too faded

http://i50.tinypic.com/2nk89z7.jpg

The parts that are 'faded' in the words are places I hit with the eraser brush. I even removed a letter or two. Not sending him the full thing.

Edit ::

FUUUCK! I accidentally wiped my whole chat history with him!
After seeing the equation, he mentioned something along the lines of "Schoeneus, i misunderstood what meant, but what use" and cut off there, then apologized for typing while he was thinking.

After lots of idle chitchat, i brought up thinking about the chess piece between the wings of the two butterflies in his picture.

He said that if I think there's one there, there may be. If I don't - there may not.

I thought on it and later told him that there's two different types of butterflies, with a chess piece in the center. That while it may be nothing, I see it being a message about two conflicting sides in a complicated 'game'.
He told me that I'm thinking on the right track, and to use the information I had gathered thus-far and think on it some more.

Edit 2 ::
Conversation continued from after I fucked up and killed my chat history :

Quote:

What do you know of the second World War? Particularly, the interception of German messages by the English?
7:53pmJames

That's one of the things I don't know a lot about from WW2. Basically, I know that both sides had bunches of people working around the clock, monitoring radio signals, breaking encryptions and such, to get the message, so that they could use them against eachother. The English used them mostly to prepare for air-raids, right?
7:54pmVladimir

As for the image: you are now starting to see what is there rather than the negative space. This is good. Now expand this idea to the other items and information you have at your disposal.
7:55pmVladimir

Yes but they had a dilemma at one point. You can research this properly but the general gist is this: Brits received information that they decoded. They realised there was to be a huge bombing raid by the Germans on a populated area.

What do you do, especially as you are preparing a massive attack on them, one that may turn the tide of war in your favour and prevent millions dying?

a) Evacuate the populated area, thus informing the Germans that you have decoded their messages and that, in turn, will make them change their messages and delay your forces indefinitely, but save many lives.
7:58pmVladimir

b) Let many innocents die but know that the next day your attack will be secure and you can counter any counter measures as you can decode their messages, thus possibly end the war quicker and save many more lives.

c) Something else?

Oh yes. You have about 2 hours to make this decision before the raid happens. so option [c] had better be something that can be done quickly.
8:01pmJames

Well, in a modern day situation, with internet and such, I'd opt for C and both clear everyone out, AND have their codes quickly cracked. But, in that situation, I don't really know. As they say - the ends justifies the means. But, I don't think I'd want to be the one deciding on which to do.

*end, not ends
8:02pmVladimir

I think you were/are correct with ends. Many innocents died that day. Some had family survive...

Some had family working in the decision making buildings.

The chances of one family with both?
8:03pmJames

They were tipped off.

Or, so I'd think. I mean, they very well could have been off visiting the grandparents or something. But, I'd think they had inside knowledge
8:04pmVladimir

2 hours. Not many telephones. And children scattered everywhere, like butterflies...
8:07pmJames

Hm, so, what are you implying? Not that they had been warned in those two hours, but that they had known far ahead of time, or, going the 'comic book' route, and implying that they had some form of ESP and could 'see' the event before it happened?

Edit ::

Even more! (this part may be one of the more important ones.)
Quote:
James

Or am I totally off with that?
8:09pmVladimir

You are asking the questions people asked before and after the event. Those people are now dead.
8:09pmJames

Hm. So, what would the right question to ask be?

Hm... would it be 'who told them'? or.. 'how were they connected to the source'?
8:11pmVladimir

The game begins. Start asking questions now. Watch your back. Old men are still men.
8:11pmJames

Is that a threat or a warning?
8:11pmVladimir

Yes.
8:12pmJames

..how did I figure I'd get that answer? haha.
8:12pmVladimir

Good Knight James, be honourable and be chivalrous. Choose the fellow pieces well. I will help when I can, but for now, watch the time.
8:12pmJames

One more question.

Just for now, any way.
8:13pmVladimir

No.
8:13pmJames

You told everyone to pick who they are out of the chess pieces. Which color are we?

bah.

Fine.

I had already asked it earlier, but didn't see a response on the wall.
8:14pmVladimir

You cannot play if the king is not on the board properly and the queen is missing can you?
8:14pmJames

No, I guess you can't.
8:14pmVladimir

Set up the board, but quickly. If you are able to as the questions from the information you have, so can others.
8:15pmJames

So, should I be sharing this information, or leave it up to them to find it on their own?

Or do they already know?

Just don't want to jump the gun here, y'know?
8:16pmVladimir

What information is that? I merely raised an ethical idea in your mind. I have told you nothing. Time has pase and philosophers who asked ethical questions in the '40s are surely dead now correct?
8:17pmJames

That is true.
Vladimir

Is it? You were deciding on trusting me. Seems you have done with facts.

Now, the answer to your equation begins with a little silver.
8:21pmJames

I didn't mean the part about them being dead being true. I mean, there still are people around from that era. I meant that it was true that all you did was raise the question. I should be more clear.
8:21pmVladimir

Good knight Digory.
8:21pmJames

As for silver.. Hm.

The dragon-slayer?
8:23pmVladimir is offline.

Also, his display pic has changed. It's now a negative image of the previous one. The 'chess piece' in the center is black. Does that make us black - as it's his game, or does that make us white - as we're against him.

Or are we?

I mean.. Is he really the bad guy here?

It's hard to tell with him. Yeah, he's creepy and stalkerish, but, has he done anything 'wrong' yet?

The chemical symbol for silver is Ag (from the Latin "argentum"). Don't know if that's of use, but I just finished reading the thread & teach chemistry so I thought I'd drop that in Smile.

If Vlad's trend keeps up the way it is... Expect a lot of messages from me >.>

I'm sharing everything that goes on with him, as it happens, because... I'm a bit slow and can't piece it all together. Figure if everyone else is reading it, they can get what I can't.

Hopefully you're getting further than I am.

I just sent Vanessa a message since she hasn't updated at all (well, she posted some pics to the group and they didn't work) today. Just checking up on her.

This is all way over my head, tbh. The Shakespeare stuff I get. I was an English major for 3 years, until I flipped it to my minor. I had to take a semester long class on Shakepeare. The chemistry and math stuff? I"m pretty useless. I like talking to Vanessa. She makes me feel smart.

Well, so far there's hasn't been any discernable riddles and I know the idea of these games is to share information but I don't want any of it leaking to Vanessa (yes I know its probably the same person IRL) because I may not be able to get any more information from him otherwise.

I think if you have information pertaining to how everyone is involved with each other and why we're doing this, we all have a right to know. Whether Vanessa is told certain information or not can be decided on as a group. That's how I personally feel about it. I share all the information Claire and Vanessa give me. It may move things forward or it may not. Not up to me to decide. We're a team, even though we may not be on the same side of the "chess board" Wink

Good day Mr. Sirin. I have heard a lot about you and it seems that you have become quite a puzzle to many. I ask myself should I trust you... well should I?

Vladimir Sirin December 15 at 9:05pm
Trust is something that is either earned or placed entirely on faith. Are you a religious man? Believe in anything? Trust in a higher power? It, ultimately, is up to you. I will continue to do the things I need to do. Whether you trust me or not is no matter as of yet. To be on the board though you will need to earn my trust. Where in the world are you? Explain yourself fully and I may be of assistance.

Jim Sawyer December 15 at 10:39pm
In the world I am in the Great Southern Land. In a state named after one of our Queen's - you seem to know a lot about them... I am a religious man but what about you Mr Sirin do you believe in a higher force???

Vladimir Sirin December 16 at 2:51am
I have to otherwise it makes no sense. Welcome to truth my friend.

Jim Sawyer December 16 at 8:14am
If I'm truly your friend then can you answer me this: From what must we protect our dear alice, the one who must become our queen??

Vladimir Sirin December 16 at 11:12am
From becoming the queen.

Jim Sawyer December 16 at 4:29pm
Ah so are we on the opposing team, must we take her off the board and replace her?

As I said don't share it around in game please.

EDIT: He replied to my question.

Quote:
Vladimir Sirin December 17 at 2:45am
No. We must play the game so it is won, but without the pawn becoming a queen. Easier said than done though, especially given the curiosity involved. If she finds out the true meaning of her family's papers then the game will be lost. Yet her uncle knows this and is prepared to sacrifice the queen for the game. Game within a game eh? By the way, is there any chance of telling me where her scans are please? Thank you.

Jim Sawyer December 16 at 3:24pm
The scans are in a group named after the highest truncated prime... search it!

I figured since he's been blocked from the group anyway there would be no harm in giving him it... if I didn't I was afraid I would lose his trust.

EDIT: Another Reply

Quote:
Vladimir Sirin December 17 at 10:36am
I have. The group is now private and Vanessa is now missing. This is not a good state of affairs Jim. Help me resolve it and quickly. Please.

Jim Sawyer December 16 at 3:44pm
I live in Australia I really don't know what I can do... I believe she said something about a green line which I think is refering to the meridian line that runs through Greenwich Park... does that mean anything to you???

Hm, that's interesting. I think even if someone tried to tell Vanessa, she wouldn't get it, lol. I thought he said earlier that she would need "an army to protect her", if the information in the notes came into the wrong hands. This is an interesting turn of events. I hope you can get more info out of him.

Also, *waves* Hi, neighbor! I'm in the state to the west of you, that seceded from your state during the Civil War Smile
