As it happens, I just died today! I tweeted a few tweets about it -- I ended up in a boat on a dark river, with 3 storylet options: make a sacrifice to the ferryman (sulky bat, lucky weasel, or dazed raven), play chess with the ferryman (it claimed to be straightforward but I failed repeatedly), or play dice with the ferryman.

Your Opportunity deck can hold 6 cards, and will come up with things like "recall the rough camraderie of Watchmaker's Hill" for the normal areas and any you've unlocked, which reduces your WOuds quality. There are also a couple of other options like stealing a few breaths from another passenger, or accepting a letter from a dead girl to be delivered to the Gracious Widow in Spite.

She wasn't there when I got back to Spite at first, but now there's a storylet there requiring a level 10 connection with either Criminals or the Orient, neither of which I have. :/

Edit: there was also a "give up, lie back and close your eyes" Opportunity card, which I was too chicken to try.

Lol, maybe if you chose the latter you'd acquire Connection: Tomb Colonists.

Possibly...but unlikely, I think. One of the Opp cards that popped up was something along the lines of "Think of the Tomb-Colonies...is that where you'll have to go when you return? Even that would be preferable. You must get back [to the living world]!"

Ambush vs. Attack in Knife and Candle?

Hey all. Been away from this forum for some time (think MetaCortechs and Acheron). I'm new to Echo Bazaar (I was hooked after reading this thread) and have a question for the more experienced players: what's the difference between an "attack" and an "ambush" in Knife and Candle? I signed up for K&C, made one kill and was later "ambushed" (and killed/robbed) by a different character. My score in K&C is still zero and the rules suggest that zero score characters cannot be attacked by anyone other than a character that they have attacked first. Since I was technically "wickedly ambushed" and not "attacked" I assumed at first that I was the victim of foul wordsmithing in addition to murder most foul. But further investigation revealed that the rules previously allowed attacks by rank rather than score. If so, then the ambush would be valid because my rank is one. Has this happened to anyone else? Is this a glitch in the game or am I just missing something?

Cheers to all.

Your score increased to 1 when you won that first attack. That allowed the other person to attack you (I'm not sure if the wording is what it always says or if there's different types of attack). When you lost that, your score went back to 0 and now you're immune again.

Since everyone in K&C at the moment appears to be quite high level, I recommend waiting until you have at least 30 Dangerous before attacking again. You're probably seeing seas of purple about now like I am.

Thanks for the clarification and advice Agent Lex. I never got a chance to review my stats before I was attacked. But IMHO it's better to split hairs than to have your hairs split. I'll return to K&C when I'm far more dangerous.

Cheers

It's hard to say if "ambush" is interchangeable with "attack," based on what the little profiles look like (posted here for those not familiar w/ K&C):

Quote:
Some random guy is currently lodging at a Spare Bedroom
You've successfully defeated some random guy (through brilliant cunning!) 1 times.
Your attacks have failed (through treachery or bad luck!) 0 times.
Some random guy has wickedly ambushed you 1 times.
They've launched 0 unsuccessful attacks against you.

Probably not the most clear scorecard, actually. Also, doesn't take into account being hunted, which has only happened to me once, and which I averted by attacking (and winning) first.

Has anyone ran into any opportunity cards/actions that require any number of Appalling Secrets? I have a sizable amount of them now, but I've been holding off on selling them just in case.

Hi All. FYI: I received an email from Failbetter Games confirming that Agent Lex's above analysis is absolutely correct.

Cheers

Another question. Has anyone figured out what Red Honey is?

You get into this in the Nemesis Ambition.

The running theory is that normal prisoner's honey is made from the exile's rose, which is black (at least, black down in the Neath -- it's sunset-colored on the surface). The red honey is made from a red rose which is a hybrid of the exile's rose and some kind of flower from Hell.

Edit: as for what it does, that remains unknown...

Haven't seen this one regarding the Correspondence yet.

Quote:
They say it's the letters that Helen wrote to Menelaus in the years of her imprisonment. They say it's the letters Raffles wrote about the Cat that never were published. They say it's the last accounts of the last days of the Third City, strung in beads on cord in a code no-one living understands...

So if Prisoners Honey is supposed to take you to dream land... is Red Honey supposed to take you to Hell?
