I sort of went skipsies on a few pages of this thread, so forgive me if it's been asked, but:

I am not currently playing this game, but I am wondering if the Twitter updates I see from people I follow are required in order for those players to advance the plot or level up or some other such forward motion?

Thanks.

No, it's not required at all. And there's only incentive to Twit once per 24 hours. Even that is not required, but the incentive is a refresh of your actions. All the twitter updates are voluntary, even the one that has an incentive attached.

For more information about the official Twitter policy, this is from Failbetter's blog:
http://blog.failbettergames.com/post/A-few-points-about-our-tweet-policy.aspx

If you're wondering why we're doing the Twitter updates when it is certainly not required and there is hardly any incentive, it's to show our friends that are playing, often to brag, compare notes, be dramatick, to support the game, etc.

Edit: Oh, and most importantly, we're so gabby on Twitter because we personally interact with the characters through Twitter, and only through Twitter.

Thank you very much for the information!

I am still undecided about how I feel about automated or semi-automated updates to Twitter - largely, it's contextual, and so I like to know the context. Smile

Consider making a ghost account to try out the game. See what you think. There's a whole slew of us who'd be glad to errr... invite you out to dinner, show you around. Wink

yup, i love that. hunting ppl helps out a lot too, since so many ppl have leveled up so much.

I have yet to join in Candle and Knife yet... I think I've still got a bit of Dangerous leveling to go before I do that, although it's my dominant trait.

Yeah.... Not much chance for a feather duster to do well.

And @krystyn, I have to say that I tend to avoid anything that requires me to tweet, do facebook stuff, whatever. I hate the 'RT and win a candy bar' ad model. The difference for me is 1. I don't tweet anything I don't want to. 2. I usually try to mark those action refresh tweets as such (nothing to see here...) and 3. Some of the writing is good enough that I actually WANT to pass it on. A lot, actually.

All that being said, I am doing this on an alternate account that I'm using only for this. So I'm preaching to the choir anyway...

Huh. I just realised that the Royal Bethlehem Hotel is a cunning reference - Bedlam's real name was the Royal Bethlehem Hospital.

Well spotted! I'd say less a reference and more a clue - like how many areas of London changed their names upon the Descent, I imagine the Hospital became a Hotel...

New Correspondence info:

Quote:
What is the Correspondence?

They say it's a series of confidential negotiations between the Masters and a devil of some note. They say it comprises the billets-doux written by Jack-of-Smiles to the Traitor Empress. They say it's the letter the Pope wrote, the one without which Rome would have been the Fourth City. They say if you read it your eyes boil and your hair turns the white of old ice. They say it's written on slate in the blood of poisoned bats.

New location?

Quote:
What is the Parlour of Virtue?

The Parlour is Mr Wines' most notorious establishment for sating the appetites of flesh. The place is well regarded, although it is still scandalous to be caught visiting. The Parlour caters to those of very particular appetites: many wealthy potential customers have been turned away with very little in the way of explanation

Are You Fascinating?

I drew the card "Fresh Flowers from the Surface" which enhances your Fascinating quality by one. Problem is the Fascinating quality is a prerequisite to the enhancement and I don't have it (<sigh> yet another example of art mimicking life Confused ), The card mentions this as a "rare opportunity" so I don't want to discard it. "Fascinating" is not yet mentioned on the wiki (http://echobazaar.wikidot.com/ to any johnny-come-latelies). Has anybody received the Fascinating quality and, if so, how? I'd rather not purchase the brass ring (like I can afford it...) if I can avoid it. Thanks in advance.

On another note, I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say maximum kudos to all those responsible for creating, maintaining, and updating the wiki. This means you:

and any and all who aided and abetted them. The Wiki looks great and is no doubt less filling; its a fantastic resource. Take a bow.

The only question I have is: how can I help? I'm green enough to not be able to follow 80% of the story lines and issues discussed in this thread, and like The Frog said, "it ain't easy being green" (no doubt a veiled reference to K&C). To which I can only add that it's even less easy being green when you're lying in some alley only a stone's throw from Hell with your throat cut (Right teh_lisa? BTW you forgot Fred the Giggling Mandrake's blankie when you joined me for tea and biscuits the night before last. And by "joined" I mean "stabbed" and by "and biscuits" I mean "times in the chest before robbing me". Not that I'm bitter or anything. Wink

Cheers

Fascinating is actually a persuasive-storylet effect, you'll get it on 'seduction' storylets. As Fascinating increases, your target becomes more enamored with you. And it's really not as rare as the opp card says, that's just part of the flavor text.

Actually it is. Barely. http://echobazaar.wikidot.com/progress

I thank you, my parrot thanks you, team #ebzwiki thanks you. Other than setting this up, I've probably done the least actual amount of content generation. Lex went on a content binge last night, i.e. Be that as it may...

You can help in a lot of ways. Does something look hinky? Not make sense? Seems like a bad organizational idea? Is it flat out wrong? There are still a lot of images we don't have, including the ones on the page above because none of us are doing those storylets at the moment. There are still lots of holes. You can PM any of that to me, use the hashtag above to give us a heads-up, or otherwise make us aware.

Newer players can actually be a big help. I don't remember what I needed to know when I was starting out, but you do know what info would make playing a lot easier. Let us know.

Just to parrot (haha) pancito here. I think part of the problem is that the wiki crew have well surpassed the early parts of the game, and view everything with the benefit of hindsight. And I think here is where newer players especially can help keep us honest and useful.

That said, if I can plug the wiki, I recently put up a page that lays out the very first steps of the game in detail:

http://echobazaar.wikidot.com/first-steps-in-detail

Would certainly appreciate suggestions, comments on its usefulness, etc. on this. Otherwise hope it will help the newest of new players get through the rather steep initial learning curve.

Edit: Also, what would be useful in the bigger picture would be a kind of wish-list--topics we haven't covered yet that need to be covered.
