So I still feel really lost. I started playing a couple of days before the Bazaar closed. I'm just trying to do storylets and cards (though I rarely have enough for the cards). I also now have an ambition. I am finding it hard to do much though since I fail at most things. I also cannot buy anything since everything I get will only fetch me pennies and everything costs waaaay more than that. I've started attacking people since I don't know what else to do but that hasn't done much for me either. Everyone keeps talking about all of this history of the land and such and I don't know any of it. Should I be interacting more on Twitter? Is that where a lot of these answers are coming from? Or are you all just playing constantly and building up tons of stuff/story? Cause it says the game can be played in minutes a day and yet I feel way behind and lost. Help?

Maybe this will help:

1. Focus on one city/skill for a while until you get lucrative enough storylets (ie, 30 x whatever 1-penny commodity per turn). Then branch out. Money is a real problem, but at some point you'll get .3 echoes or better per action.

2. Play opportunity cards whenever possible. Only play cards that are worth spending the action point.

3. Try not to spread yourself out over several qualities. For example, I only have 1 kind of recurring dream, not several. I only have a few "Contacts" which I build up to higher levels. The others I ignore.

4. Only put actions into ambitions when they show up as high-risk or easier. Don't expect to finish an ambition anytime soon. I'm still working on the 1st one, which I started weeks ago.

5. Only have one venture at a time.

6. Do social things with your friends. Those second-chance bonuses you get really help sometimes.

Oh, and on the universe thing, all I can say is: read everything. The sidebars, the narratives of the storylets, other people's "echoes." Read it all.

Strategy Guide I
take with boxes of salt...

Lots of ways to play... This is more or less how I'm handling it. Lex, Jello, Diz, ancalime and others will prolly have better/more ideas. 1st goal, get out of prison, which you've done. Next, find a place to live. Next, figure out what attributes you need for your Ambition and start working on those.

Yes, the game needs more low level cards, I think. There's even some talk about that on the in-game 'ideas' forum, and it will probably happen. The thing about Echoes is that they are geared to the level of the attribute you are testing. Well, really the challenge, but that's dependent on levels, so... As you advance the rewards increase. I do think the low end is a bit stingy, but it sorts itself out pretty well as you go along. Took me forever to get enough stuffs to move to the 'Smoke Filled Flophouse.' It's probably best to hang on to objects until you need to buy something, and esp. those you are using for a given goal. There is essentially a 100% mark up on doing a sell - buy move. Worse in some cases, like duds and pets. I've reached the point where the rewards on some of the cards aren't worth spending an action on, but that's recent.

It's good to have goals, whatever they may be, to keep you from random flopping around. Though that's not a bad thing either, especially at first. If you don't have a reasonable chance at winning a card, dump it. It'll come back again. I'd say the gold-border cards might be an exception since they're pretty rare.

Actions are the real currency of the game. Use them all, but don't worry too much about the ones after there is a 27 minute refresh. That's like five hours to refresh the candle. I try to let those build up and use a stack before my day turns over, but if I have to actually do something in RL it doesn't bother me. I usually run a full candle, or close, and then do other stuff, like make a living. The limit of 70 actions/day (or whatever it is) is really 79 since if you leave one action on the 'actions left' stack the candle will build at the 7 minute rate instead of the 27. I try to save my tweet refresh for after I've exhausted the quick stack, so that means really 89/day. That's essentially nine five minute sessions. Ok, maybe ten minutes, maybe two.

As for tweeting, it's a good thing to do if you are a social game player. Some days I is, some days I isn't. At least follow all the Masters so you can see what's going on. el Igore had the count at 11 I think. It's not a bad thing to follow people who are more advanced than you, either. Sometimes they give ideas in their tweets, and I think anyone here is more than happy to help if you have questions about specifics.

Hope that helps a bit.

Can somebody here help me with one of the opportunity cards? It says that I need to enter the name of someone to participate in "a troubling conversation about dusty stones". Is there anyone who wants to do this with me?

It needs to be someone who is playing that you are also following on twitter. You can add me if you like (twitter is teh_lisa). You can also see who you follow on twitter that is playing already by going to your home screen and clicking to see rumours. The people it lists, if any, are people you follow on twitter who are also playing.

You don't need to be following them, and they don't need to be following you. But they do need to be playing already, out of jail, and not uh "otherwise disposed."

OK, one last thing I'm a bit confused about.

I know there are pennies and fate, which are both currencies.
But what are echoes? Apparently I need 2 to buy a weapon.

100 pennies equal 1 Echo. Echoes are the more in-game currency, Fate is for us as players to use.

It's time for them to implement inter-player-trading.
I have a spare Warm Amber (weapon, persuasive +1) and I can't sell it at the Bazaar.
Or can weapons be stolen in KnC too, like the fighting items?

Oh, thanks for clearing that up. I was confused too then.

The PM did an interview on BBC 5 radio that is available here:

It's the second segment @ about 12:40.

Thanks diszaster. Good, informative interview. It addressed what I thought would be the primary scaling problem, contact with the Masters. I also found the idea that Fallen London is really/also a test of the toolset intriguing.

*goes to sign up for the Prisoner's Honey beta*

Yes, as soon as the Masters started talking back in earnest to us, I changed my expectations about responsiveness. Have to be patient with this kind of thing, esp. given the tiny-ness of failbetter games as a company.

* blushingly admits she signed up for PH beta on day 1 *
