Haven't done steg in a long time... What works on png files? It occurs to me that the text on the image might be the key to the steg, if it is indeed steged, which will hopefully give us the key for the Mashimisho site. (He said it was semi random letters/numbers). So, what's the answer to all those questions? Maybe 'dream' nonexistent, unreal, etc.

Also, the &nbsp (non-breaking space) is just to format the lines on the page.

I've tried all of the words above as well as a Mashimisho, nothing works. I'm using Decamouflage to desteg. There's a link in the ARG Player Tutorial if you'd like to download it.

Thanks. And I tried Camouflage, doesn't work on my 64-bit Vista, and it seems JPHide cannot handle non-jpeg files (at least for me).

It may not be camo.

There's a trick called 'Fusion' that I think originated on the chans. It's a batch file program that lets you fuze an RAR with a picture. It's just like camo, but the files done with the 'fusion.bat' won't open in camo.

I'll go look at the picture and report back.

Edit ::
Nope, not done with the 'fusion' method.

Judging from the update times, I'd guess he's in Europe (if where ever he is exists physically) or at least working on that schedule.

I don't like the sound of 'preserving control' - it *definitely* feels like Orwellian territory.

Hate to be the burster of bubbles, but the image most likely isn't stegged. 500 x 375 PNG file, it's only 235 kb. That's about right.

HOWEVER...

When I opened/saved the file under a different name(added a (2) to the end), the file drops 4 KB. I'm assuming that's just header garbage differences between Photoshop/Gimp/Paint/whatever.

Looking through the first and last bits of the file in a hex editor, nothing seems out of place. The passkey to desteg is found there. Methinks the image was just for the hidden text.

That does sound a bit high, but you never know. PNG is lossless, but it is potentially layered.

I haven't been following this... where's the image? I can try it in Fireworks and see if there's anything to the layering or metadata in it.

Yeah, I just saw it.

Source image (the click-thru one) is 640x480 RGB at 390K. No apparent hidden layers or meta data, and it's one solid bitmap when brought in to Fireworks.

The image on the main page is a thumbnail most probably auto-generated by the Tumblr system.

Image is hosted at Amazon S3. I don't know how that service works, but if it has an interface for uploading images and does the thumbnails itself then it could have the same issues I had with Facebook: it re-renders the image and any metadata or stegging disappears.

I'm glad you guys are around because I didn't even pay attention to the sizes of the file.

Tumblr lets you queue updates and post them according to a schedule, but maybe you can judge by the timing of his twitter replies. I think his place physically exists. He has garbage pick up service anyway. And streets to walk down and weather to grouse about and grocery stores.
When he says "I guess some of you live in liquids, solids, and gases" does he mean the states (states of matter or the United States)? Or is that too cheesy? He told become_rust he wasn't in the US.

Actually, I was thinking that too. He can't say a lot of things, due to where he is, and because of the 1984 feel to it - some words may tip off their version of the 'thought police'. He couldn't say 'The States', but, stating the states of matter as an allusion to it...not only does it fit, but it's witty.

I tried another approach: the National Guard mention.

Since Kevin said he's in 2009, I look up on which country currently has a "National Guard" agency besides USA.

Here is what I found on Wikipedia:

Bulgaria
Georgia
Republic of Cyprus
Latvia
Portugal
Sri Lanka
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Iraq
Kuwait

@kevinbalderock I was thinking... If those certain "bad words" will tip them off. Can you encipher them? or would they recognize that too.

Figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

Lol, I can't believe I didn't think of that.

Let's just hope it's not Iraq. I just got back from there. And the thought of him being enlisted into the Sons of Iraq would be something I could sympathize with for not getting paid, etc. etc... Razz

Sorry for the triplepost... But new word from Kevin.

In response to enciphering "bad words", that's a definite no, he says that it would be much worse than just saying them normally.

He was also kind of astonished that none of us knew about Mashimisho, and expressed a great amount of concern that if they only exist where he is....

@become_rust I thought it was everywhere, but if it's only here, then... Oh no.

Of which I followed up with

Quote:
@kevinbalderock Are they a front for something larger? The way they state themselves, it sounds like they have a monopoly on production there.

*EDIT*/update Definitely Orwellian.

Quote:
@become_rust They make everything here. Oh no...

Quote:
@kevinbalderock If so... Does everyone work for them? You said you had your key,so I was wondering if you do. What can we do to help?

New Tumblr post, it's not looking good for Kevin ATM...

Quote:
Someone was at my window.

I'm afraid now. I mean, even more than before. I don't know who it was. It was dark, and I only caught a glimpse. But I swear, someone was crouched down on the ground, peaking in through the window.

I don't know what I'm going to do.

Goodnight.
