 		My friend texted me a while ago while she was in school, because they were watching a video in a history class. Apparently, a circle with an X over it was a communication sign between hobos.

The "Gimme $20" makes all the more sense now.

Actually his new Twitter update says that he's going back to the house.
After several messages from people telling him to go back and check a closet.
It turns out this is an ARG after all.

There was ever any question that this wasn't an ARG? And secondly, the twitter update does not prove that this is an ARG. It simply proves that J is reading the messages that we are sending him and reacting. Think of it this way: you're writing a biography about yourself, and we all know you're doing it. If eleven of us message you saying you should touch upon your experience with these forums and you decide to, does that make everything false?

Sort of a shitty analogy, but I think it looks better than it smells.

well, due to the lack of any actual interaction with J, beyond the occasional message that doesn't have anything for us to do anyway, it doesn't really have any arg elements

 		In my mind, there's a difference between an ARG and a Chaotic fiction.
While ARGs have an aspect of Chaotic Fiction, it doesn't have to go the otherway around.

That being said, in my mind, Marble Hornets is a Chaotic Fiction. The writer(s) know what's going to happen loosely, but leave it upon the readers/'players' to push them towards that, which can change the outcome of the story, or at least the means that bring about the end.

As to what Chaos said - I agree. Marble Hornets is more of a webseries than anything. A webseries revolving around a piece of chaotic fiction with a creepy stalking monsterthing in it.
