Immersive Urban Adventure
What kinds of interactivity would you want/love, if you were a player?

Hi ARGers, I am a long-time lurker (small time PM-team aide and player) since 2003...I remember what pulled me down the rabbithole first was Sable and Shuck (geez I feel old!)...

I am now part of a new grassroots London-based theatre company, The Outsiders Theatre Co. (find us on facebook) and for our first project we are developing an immersive performance adventure which will take place on the streets of London. We are not doing this for any profit right now - it is purely for love of making exciting things happen which allow people to escape reality for a few hours.

BACKGROUND INFO - The piece will suck participants into a world of danger and espionage as they discover their true identities as spies who have had their memories erased...the whole experience will be based around small groups or individuals taking a journey around central London, encountering various actors and uncovering a plot which will be typically treacherous and film noir in style. In essence, the immersive performance will place the participants in the role of the protagonist.

THIS IS WHERE I WOULD LOVE YOUR ARG OPINIONS: I would be delighted to know what kinds of things you would want to happen to you as a player/participant/audience member. What kinds of interactivity would you like to happen to you? Do you have any ideas regarding plot or the kinds of tasks the players must do? All feedback is welcome and encouraged!

We are already exploring options of having players negotiate with rogue characters, bargaining with fake money (which they will get in a starter pack) in order to gain information...also finding/decoding a telephone number to ring from a phonebox to get their next orders...what other kinds of interactive elements would YOU like there to be if you were playing?

We are thinking of perhaps working around a points based system, in which each small team (without their knowledge) are given a ranking by each actor they meet, based on how well they are doing/are dealing with the situations...and the team with the most points win something. Though this is only an possibility at the moment in order to provide a payoff at the end.

In order to give the players as much freedom within shaping their own plot - we are considering having them be told/shown by a 'rogue agent' or 'enemy' actor that the company the participants are working for are not telling them the whole truth, giving them cause to doubt those they are taking orders from - thus giving them the dilemma, whether to follow orders or sabotage from the inside.

Also, we are trying to think of an ending which will give the players a payoff and a sense of accomplishment that it was all worth it. Any ideas for this would be greatly apprecitated?

So, based on all that I have told you, I would love your ARG-community feedback/suggestions/ideas/input. We are a small grassroots company, so please don't think we are gaining from your input at all...this is a labour of love.

Many thanks, I look forward to reading your responses.

Coal. x

Hey Coal... the entire idea sounds pretty epic and I'd love to get involved. As for a pay-off, obviously money is out of the question but most people love the chivalrous Mario-style 'save the princess' ending. Perhaps a female member of the troupe can play the princess and the entire point is to rescue her from whichever side has her... with the difficulty in the game coming from not knowing which side has her?

This does sound pretty awesome. I'm not too far from old London town and so I might even be interested in participating! (I won't give anything away now that I've peeked behind the curtain, promise!)

What I would love to happen is, for example:

In your starter pack you get instructions to meet an individual in a coffee shop in covent garden (or where ever). You get descriptions of the individual, but its pretty obvious who they are when you get there - they are the protagonist. They are in some sort of trouble or uncovering a plot (obviously thats up to you). They've arranged a meeting with a shady informant but can't attend - thats where the players come in. They are given a sketch of the individual they are going to meet (think the ultimate spy meeting, long trenchcoat, panama hat, on a bench with a breifcase - might have to be a plastic flimsy - can't really hand out a tonne of leather breifcases!) and they are given a package to pass over - they are given a code word and sent on their way.

Maybe a meeting in St James' park? Running round the park looking for a bloke in a trenchcoat looking shady and sitting on a bench, they sit down and utter "i hear that the squirrels are particularly randy this season" and the exchange takes place.

I think that would be so much fun XD.

Obviously it might depend on how many players there are. You don't really want a queue of people waiting to meet the shady informant - kinda ruins the mood.

I love the idea of a Bourne-style erased memory thing. It would be great to start it with the players being "recognized" by someone (or maybe multiple someones?). For example, you give the players a set of fairly mundane directions, but on the way they are clearly spotted by someone who "knows the truth." Then maybe they could be whisked out of harm's way by the contact they're supposed to be meeting?
