Anyone have a clue why there seem to be several references to the experiment Wired magazine did with Evan Ratliff? The hashtag #vanish was used by people on twitter to track information on him, and has popped up in a couple tweets so far by @palindromer, and whose name was used by @LesMichaels in a recent update.

Is this possibly a RL manhunt with a CF facet?

I was wondering what the connection was to the wired thing myself but haven't stopped to look into it yet (I know, weak, right?). I suppose it's possible that it's intended to point us in the right direction as far as gameplay style maybe. (a Trey clues so far Are reading like hints from Carmen san Diego.

Hottest angle right now is class / grade info, getting chann1geeks to crack, and analyzing the class info from 1111ghostly.

He is kind of a jerk, but being an IT guy, I can definitely see where he's coming from. Brute forcing an entire college's list of passwords without supercomputers would take years, especially if they're using any decent encryption. Depending on what actually happened, it would be much easier to go about things in a different way. He said their local backups, and their backup tapes were damaged, so depending on what got corrupted, there may not even be any password files for them to fix.

I think we're just gonna have to wait this one out a little bit longer. Does anyone have any thoughts on A. Trey's newest Tweet? Why would he run away, disguise himself, and them tell Lee Roy to come find him? The only thing I keep coming back to is stolen data, but what would be sensitive enough at a college to want to steal, and have to disguise yourself afterwards?

Let's move this to Lee_Roy10 cause my boss has the password for Chann1nGeeks & I don't want to change it. Tweet me there after reading here.

EDIT: my bad (trying to post from iPhone is garbage). This is a DM from chann1geeks (sysop)

Say where you graduated, etc - add in that you were an IT manager at Miskatonic University, just so they realise that you're not a 'real' person looking for a job. I would have been following this more closely, but my university had an honest-to-god IT shutdown of it's own Rolling Eyes

That list of websites should give you an idea where to look next... he obviously has a twitter, facebook and gmail. And he's been on craiglist, so might be a good idea to stop by there and have a search.

It's clear from his links that he is a bit paranoid about being followed, and that last link (the followmenot one) is designed to throw random stuff into your search history to confuse people trying to see what you've been doing. So anything completely off the wall (like the fish restaurant, perhaps) is possibly irrelevant.

Did like you suggested. The fact I actually GPG-sign most of my outgoing emails should help make it look geeky Razz

Shit. dropped the ball -- been busy, haven't been in my email:

Quote:

Hey,

Checking further, I found the websites of like 35 colleges... all middle and small sized schools, mostly in the Midwest. So I was like, the boss must be looking for a new position.

At one of the schools on his list I have a techie friend, who recently mentioned they've been having systems issues! Not as bad as ours... but you have you heard about that IE vulnerability with malware via malicious emails with attachments and links? I'm just about to send out an alert here.

Meanwhile, I get Tweeted by Prof. Graham, who turns me on to the fact that atreynich is blogging while he's gone! She DM'd me the site and password, and by reading his posts it appears fairly obvious he's been in Chicago... ate at Ed Debevics on Saturday. (Rumors have floated that Graham and Nich are well acquainted, if you catch my drift.)

The friend on the other campus - he's at a small private college in IL

Wtf?! Is our head techie a cyber terrorist??!! While he's never exactly been on my fave peeps list, I would never have suspected him of sabotaging systems.

Sounds like we're getting a plot to follow now -- or soon, anyways. This is getting interesting for real Smile
