It's possible, sure, but I wouldn't say it's the Occam's Razor solution. It's possible for Jay to have memory gaps, we know it's happened before that point and since then, but for the camera to skip the same moments Jay does, perfectly synced, without the usual extreme distortion that accompanies the camera not working properly, it seems unlikely. Plus, we see in the next entry that Jay leaves his bedroom through the door, but does not come out the other side, and instead goes someplace else, and the door in Brian's house takes him into that mystery boiler room place, so we know that time/space distortion does happen, and happened at least once in entry 23. Furthermore, at the time Jay arrived at the house, it was still bright outside despite the sky being overcast, which tells me that it probably wasn't close to sunset at the time. As for what you said about the flashlight, Jay probably brought it not because it was close to nightfall, but because he knew the electricity in the house was not working.

Important detail that I noticed as I rewatched the entry yet again: Starting from the 2:45 mark, we see Jay look down the staircase, after the front door has been closed, but it's still bright enough outside for the sunlight coming in from the other end of the house to be illuminating the area at the bottom of the stairs. Jay turns away from the staircase, opens a door, and walks into a room that is pitch black, devoid of all light, in spite of there being a window that's facing roughly the same direction as the sliding glass door at the back of the first floor, which was letting light into the area beneath the staircase. When would the blackout have happened there? It was pretty much all one continous motion.

So yeah, I'd say that while possible, your solution is less likely, and that Occam's Razor would dictate that the events happened as we saw them, since there's not really any evidence that he blacked out or that the camera shut off while he was upstairs in entry 23.

Yeah, the simple solution is that he skipped through time. Jay would have had to have blacked out, standing, for several hours. And there is no obvious skip point in the recording, which happens in every other instance of distortion causing the camera to fail.

Also, Jay said that he intended to go there in the daytime, because of what happened last time he was there, so it wasn't that close to night.

Teleportation is listed in order of occurrence.





I have created an insanely in-depth and proportional recreation of the parts of the house (and the parts outside) which we see in the entry. You simply won't realize how utterly disorienting the entry is until you've mapped it out completely. NOTE: For each teleporation, a cut is REQUIRED.

The darkness occurring is absolutely and 100% inarguable, and I have found the exact moment when it happens. Whether or not the time is distorted intentionally is another thing, but teleportation most definitely occurs on occasions so frequent that most may be surprised (I certainly didn't know it happened this many times).

There is a specific cut in which it seems to get much darker, and this is confirmed to be a cut (it is a physical requirement). I refer to 2:51 or teleportation 3, in which Jay walks through the third hallway door and into the 2nd entrance of the Symbol Room. From this moment forward, for whatever reason, the entirety of the house becomes much darker (This is absolutely NOT due to the front door being shut. The Symbol Room, which namely becomes pitch black in comparison to its dusky lighting, receives no light from that source).

It is only until teleporation 5 happens that it is light out again, shown when Jay exits the closet. Time jumping does occur for OOG or IG reasons. Whether or not it was truly intentional hardly matters, I believe, as even if it was a 'mistake' I could see the guys agreeing for it to be canon in that it adds a little something to the madness and is coherent with other time-space warping shenanigans that occur throughout the series.

Not relevant to the current discussion, but all this renewed talk about 23 is reminding me why it was my favourite entry for such a long time. I think a few later ones have surpassed it slightly but this is still a damn fine video, especially considering how tiny the scope is ("hey, let's walk around a small hallway for three minutes!").

I don't think this episode has been surpassed at all. No episode manages to pack so much into less than 8 minutes. This entry is a masterpiece.

As far as the discussion goes; I do think the lighting-change is due to cutting in between taking shots, but I (personally) believe we are also meant to take it as an in-game time change due to teleportation too.

Did anyone else notice when jay was in the basement, after he said "Hello?" another deeper quieter voice said Hello back? It was at 5:19 and repeated at 6:50 when he saw TO.
