I can't believe I missed a Birmingham episode.

Major fail. Being busy and having a life is not conducive to good ARGing!

Anyway.... *trying to jump back in again*

*NEW BLOG POST*

On the lookout
15 July 2010

As you might remember from our adventures in Birmingham, I know a few people who can supply hard-to-find technology. They're not people I like to deal with. Their attitude to invoicing and payment collection is a little too aggressive.

On the other hand, the black-marketers are pleasantly straightforward compared to these Intelligence Service people. Even the simplest task becomes a top secret exercise.

They've promised to give us some technical help, but nothing is ever simple with them. Their technical expert - who calls himself 'Orson' - is determined not have his cover blown, so we're going to have to contact him on his terms. We've been told to wait for a message in tomorrow's LA Times.

So if you're in America, keep an eye on the newsstands and email me at 1234SPLATsecretlewis.com if you spot anything.

Well, that is disappointing. Sad I'm assuming there is now no point in me buying The Age (or getting someone in Melbourne to buy it for me this morning).

Now to wait at least 25 hours for the next message.

It's hard to keep up with this global paper chase. Keep watching Lewis's twitter feed @SecretLewis so that you know where Orson's next clue will appear - it could be in your part of the world. And even if it isn't, we might need you to persuade someone there to track down the clue on our behalf.

We can't afford to miss a link in this chain. There's a precious Intelligence Service gadget at stake.

It looks like today's instructions are somewhere in Craigslist (Melbourne, Australia).

I don't enjoy being strung along and Orson has pretty much strung me along to the end of my tether. Whatever he's going to give us, it had better be worth it. For those of you not keeping up with @SecretLewis, the latest we've heard from him is that we need to read The Times of India today. If you can get hold of a copy, great. If you know someone who can, get onto them now and make sure they mail me the details at 1234SPLATsecretlewis.com.

Meanwhile, it looks like you've been refining your times on the heist simulator. The best time I've seen so far on the web version is 02:14:68. Anyone gone faster than that?

So, Orson will meet Lewis in Berlin. Only Lewis. He's absolutely insistent that Lewis come alone, so please, stay out of the area. We don't want to spook Orson now that we've come this far.

But we'll need to be alert on Friday so we can help Lewis overcome whatever obstacles Orson throws in his way. Something tells me he isn't going to make this easy for us. He's already scheduled it for a day when Lewis is supposed to be working. We'll just have to figure out a way round that.

Be online at 2pm Berlin time (that's 1pm in the UK, 8am in New York, or 8pm in Hong Kong) and have your thinking caps at the ready. Watch @SecretLewis or at least follow the Twitter feed on the Home page of this website. We need keen minds, poised and ready for action. Sharpen up.

With the help of Lenny and a helicopter, Lewis is going to make it to Berlin just in time. As per Orson's instructions, he'll be at the Park Inn today at 2pm German time (that's 1pm in the UK, 8am in New York, or 8pm in Hong Kong) to pick up further instructions.

Those instructions will be for him and for us. Set your alarms. Be at your machines. Watch @SecretLewis.

He must arrive alone, so please don't try to follow him. If you need to get hold of him (via me), email 1234SPLATsecretlewis.com or tweet him @SecretLewis.

* Lewis will be performing the heist on Friday.

That was a long weekend. Congratulations again to everyone who helped Lewis find his way around Berlin and follow Orson's teasing trail of clues.

The good news is that it was worth the wait. Orson gave Lewis a digital device which can deactivate and unlock doors with electronic alarms – specifically, it will open the exterior door to the swimming pool of Petrarkov's villa in Hungary. That will save us a lot of time during the heist, and the less time we have to spend in there, the lower the risk for everyone.

So I've updated the heist simulator (online and on mobile) to reflect this new change. Just go to the simulator page, click 'Enter Code' and type 555196612. That will unlock the swimming pool door for you – meaning you can shave another few seconds off your times.

You've been neglecting that simulator. Come on – let's see how fast you can go.
The fastest route I've found is to go left around the pond, into the swimming pool area, perform the theft and then go out the same way. The code makes more than just a few seconds difference to my final times.

Final practice

I've just arrived in Hungary. Lewis is ready to go, but we're going to have to wait a little while yet. Pertrarkov has invited a couple of hundred close friends to his home for a celebration tomorrow night, and the whole place is full of catering staff and security guards.

Under other circumstances, this might have been an opportunity to get inside and look around. As it is, it's not worth the risk – we're much better off sticking with our plan of going in when the villa is at its quietest.

That will be on Friday night, when Petrarkov has conveniently been invited out to an ambassadorial function. His place will be empty. That's when we move.

In the meantime, Lewis is sharpening up with more of Joe's training exercises. Don't let the man train alone.

It was a close run thing, but Lewis made it. Take a look at the video. The genuine painting was recovered and is back in its rightful place, and as far as Petrarkov is concerned, nothing happened. And life for us goes back to normal.

All of us have gone through a pretty crazy time over the last few weeks – working for the Intelligence Service, tracking down lost forgeries, scouring Berlin for gadget masters, getting chased by ravenous dogs – but now it's over.

The French have a useful phrase for this: "Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose" – "The more things change, the more they stay the same." Lewis is back behind the wheel where he belongs. Lenny has flown back to Switzerland, and I'll follow soon. The Intelligence Service has stopped their surveillance (or so they tell us) and we're free to get on with our own projects again.

But there has been one interesting change. When our handler said farewell and thank you, she admitted that she owes us a favour. She's given me something. I'll save it until we really need it.

Right now, I'm looking forward to a mid-season break. But I don't want you resting on your laurels. I want you to focus on recruitment. We need a truly global network of helpers, so spread the word. Because when we're called back into action – and we will be back in action – who knows where we'll need to be? All we can do is prepare for the unexpected.

No change there.
I've had fun this round, especially with the Berlin puzzle trail. Now I'm looking forward to Chapter 4. Smile

Summary: Anna has posted a youtube video encouraging players in Egypt, Lebanon and the UAE to sign up for Secret Lewis

Well, I have to say that I did not see this update coming. Anna has posted a new recruitment video to youtube.

Anna wrote:
Are you up to the challenge?

You've come this far. You've already shown you have a sense of adventure. But do you have what it takes to conduct a secret mission and help Lewis plan his next daring heist?

In September, Lewis will need your assistance. In cities across Arabia, he will need a network of agents who can act on his behalf, finding out information and discovering secrets in real-life places that are too public for him to visit in person - and you can win amazing prizes.

So now the first question: where are you?

Egypt Lebanon UAE
I would have predicted that the next live event would happen in France rather than in Arabia, but the grand prize of a training session with Lewis Hamilton sounds pretty exciting.

Summary: Chapter 4 (out of 5) of Secret Lewis has begun. This is a good time for newcomers to join in.
Secret Lewis has taken inspiration from Doctor Who and is trying to set up a worldwide chant of "ARROWCHAPTER" across multiple mediums.
Anna wrote:
Arrowchapter

Back in July, Lewis earned a favour. (Watch the video of him in Hungary to see how he did it.) With your help, he tracked down and recovered a stolen painting on behalf of the Intelligence Service. They're a very large, very powerful group of people – good people to have in your debt.

Since then, we've been left to our own devices. Lewis has been enjoying the mid-season break, Lenny has been not-enjoying training, and I've been working on my Paganini.

Of course I've also kept an eye on the art world – not only the headlines, but also the rumour mills and whispers around the galleries and museums. And that's how I came to learn that a sketchbook once belonging to Leonardo da Vinci has been stolen from the National Gallery of Fine Arts in Brussels.

Lewis thinks this is a challenge worthy of our collective skills. We're going to get it back.

But where do we start? The Gallery are embarrassed because their security was bypassed so easily. The local police are literally clueless. The sketchbook could be anywhere by now.

So we're going to call in that favour. When the Intelligence Service thanked us for our work last month, they gave us a codeword. If we ever need help, if we're ever in trouble, we just need to shout this codeword as loud as we can.

The word is ARROWCHAPTER.

Tweet it, blog it, text it, print it. I want to see that word everywhere. We need to make some serious noise so that the Intelligence Service will get back in touch. Be loud! Now!

You're a noisy bunch. The Intelligence Service – who, in fairness, are pretty good at hearing things – certainly heard you loud and clear.

This morning, our handler got back in touch, wanting to know what the emergency was. I explained the da Vinci sketchbook problem. She was rather surprised that we would use up our one-off get-out-of-jail-free codeword on such a simple problem, but then I hadn't realised it was a one-off. Too late now.

Anyway, we've been promised all the information the Intelligence Service can gather from their international network of agents and informants, from now until we get the sketchbook back.

She said her electronic surveillance division in India will have something for us on Saturday.

Those of you who've met an Intelligence Service agent before will know that they like to deal with people face to face. They also go to great lengths to protect their cover. So if you're near Mumbai, Bangalore or Gurgaon and you're free this Saturday, get ready. You're going on an adventure.

Lewis has had a word with Reebok and they've agreed to coordinate our efforts. Just go to one of the following locations, alone or with friends, at any point during the times indicated:

Bangalore - Reebok Store, No.50, Residency Road. [Saturday 4 September, 4.00pm-8.30pm.]
Gurgaon - Reebok Store, Shop No. 32-33, Ground Floor, Ambience Mall, NH – 8. [Saturday 4 September, 4.00pm-8.30pm.]
Mumbai - Reebok Store, Shop No. 1, 2, 3 & 4, Ram Krishna Chambers (Next to Ram Krishna Lane) Linking Road. [Saturday 4 September, 4.00pm-8.30pm.]

They even agreed to provide incentives and rewards for taking part – so clear your schedule and get ready to join the search for your local intelligence agent.
