Slender Man.avi (Minecraft Nonsense)

YouTube: Link

"I'd left the base to go exploring in the woods. Mezurya had come with me. I told him to wait outside of the cave while I went in to check for creepers. I don't know how long I had spent in the cave, but when I finally re-emerged from its depths, Mezurya had fled. I went back to the base, hoping he'd returned, but I found the base empty, all of the doors were locked and closed, and little seemed disturbed. I checked the whole base top to bottom but could find no trace of Mezurya, the only sign of any kind of movement was that his bed was un-made. I then checked my emails and found that Mezurya had sent me an email with the above video as an attachment. That was a few days ago, and it's the last I've heard from Mezurya since then."

Well that's the joke description, now for the actual one. For those of you who don't know I am a big fan of three Slender Man series on YouTube, those being EverymanHybrid, TribesTwelve (or TwelveTribes I always get it mixed up) and especially Marble Hornets. Given that the low draw distance setting on MineCraft looks like fog, and I happened to have a Slendy character model, just thought it'd be good for a little video.

The video was filmed and edited by Mezurya.

The Slender Man and "Other" were played by SideWaysThinker.

Not sure if this is supposed to be funny or scary, but it's neither. The basic idea could be cool (for a Minecraft video) but the distortion is so half-assed that it ruins everything.

Yeah, the distortion could use a lot of work but the concept certainly is interesting.

Ditto on this. The distortion was a bit more '80s/90s VHS tape' and less like the AV disturbances Slendy usually causes, although that could be spun if you had part of the theme being that this was filmed way-back-when (although that wouldn't work too well with Minecraft, seeing as that's not exactly a game from the 90s).

I liked the concept, but the part with the Apple-Bottom Jeans song didn't fit right, IMO. If it was a video for the lulz, I would've suggested setting that tone earlier in the piece, since it appears in its current form to be more going for a typical Slenderman video feel (creepy, suspenseful). Either that, or end on the song, since the Slendy appearances afterwards seem to return to that horror/suspense feel.

Also (and I know this is a lot, but I'm just riffing) some sound design might've added an effect. I know MC doesn't really have much in the way of sound/music, but since you are kind of going in a different direction by using the camera overlay and all, it might've been cool to use some more sound design to enhance the mood.

I don't claim to be an expert in any of this - I'm only a film student, not a professional filmmaker or anything - but just a few tips in case you decide to revisit this or do something similar in the future. Good general concept, and A for effort. The execution and theme/mood/atmosphere/whatever could have benefitted from a bit of effort, is all. Hope that was a bit more constructive/what-you-were-looking-for.

I am talking to my friend (the one who actually FILMED the video) and we might try to change up the video and add some audio. It was more of an editing test than an actual video.

good concept, poor execution I would have to say. The distortion became very annoying very quickly, and definitely need to add some sort of audio besides KSHHHHKSHHHHHKSHHHH. With a little polishing this should turn out rather nicely Very Happy

Not sure how criticizing your video for having bad distortion is supposed to be snobby. The distortion is one of the key things that makes the slender man what he is, and all you did was crossfade into the same clip of white noise over and over to hide your cuts. That's straight-up lazy. I get that it's just a quick video you threw together, but I'm not going to pretend just because of that excuse.

Want actual criticism? Okay. Aside from the Apple Bottom Jeans thing taking away from the scariness (I'll assume you did that intentionally), the lack of sound design is the main problem. If you have footsteps or dripping water or anything else for ambience, the location in the video will seem "silent" and have at least some amount of atmosphere to it. With the audio being muted entirely, the viewer gets the impression that you just don't know how to record audio with your computer (similar to people who have "Unregistered HyperCam 2" in the corner of their videos).

Your set is as well-designed as it could be given the limitations -- I especially like the long, narrow hallways -- but I would've liked to see it change more as you progressed through it. One idea I just came up with: create a bunch of dirt tunnels just one block below the set, then plant someone down there to aim up and destroy a block of the floor as you walk over it. That way it's like a floorboard broke or something and you can drop into some other, creepier area of the set. (With sound design, you could use amplitude modulation to rip off that effect that Marble Hornets always uses right as you enter the new area. Or you could be creative and figure out another type of distortion; that's up to you.)

That one shot of Slender Man from above looks dreadful, because it draws attention to his giant Lego-block head. It sucks that you can't get a character model that's actually slender, but you need to be careful to frame your shots so it looks semi-decent. Most shots look about as good as they could be, though, so good job on that for the most part.

Hopefully this is more constructive. Smile

We were mostly just doing it on a spurr of the moment thing so not much work went into it but me and my friend are actually discussing making an actual Slender Man video in Minecraft. I know there is a WAY to make my Slendy character model more "Slender" by making some of the parts invisible, but I didn't make the original and am working on that. My friend who edited this doesn't actually watch Slender Man stuff so he didn't know what we needed, and due to yes Laziness on our part we didn't add in sounds but we are disucssing how to now, we are planning to have no spoken words but rather have panic sounds (panting from running and obviously the weird distorted sounds common with the slender man). I am also showing him some Marble Hornets now so he knows what the distortion looks like.

I think it would also look a bit more polished if you added that "zoom bar" thing that cheap camcorders have. When you zoom in or out, a little bar appears at the bottom that goes from W (wide) to T (tight) and indicates how zoomed in the camera is. Not necessary, but it would add polish.

Actually, now that I think about it, adding some digital shake to the footage would also make it seem much more polished and less like video game footage. Has to be reasonable, though.

Don't forget that Minecraft has its own sweet sound effects! The 'unexplored cave' one could be used once or twice. The footsteps always sound lonely in that game, to me.

Less lighting at certain parts would be good, too. Seeing his silhouette with only lights behind would help!
