Shoot JR?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A king can never die.
The other two together make nasty things kings do.

I'll go with dynasty

XXVIII

but that was just a dream, that was just a dream...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
dynasty is right! (but I think JR was on Dallas?) Bellamy fooled me in this instance because the previous uses of"king" did not refer to a person.

The next one sounds quaint, all the spelling, spacing and punctuation is correct.

XXVIII

I hired Pat to drive a pig;
The price he asked I thought was big.
"Bedad," said Pat, "you don't suppose
I'll lade the craycher by the nose;
Perhaps your honor'll tell me how
Convaniently to drive a sow:
Before she's in my first my second,
My whole a pittance you'll have reckoned."

Good job, booba.
I was majorly stuck on trying to make a single term fit the 2nd AND 3rd parts as individual monosyllabic items not as a 2-syllable word.
Funny what clicks and what doesn't. I'd have never made the leaps that one required.

Fortunately I just jumped from king, die, to end of a dynasty immediately, it took a while to figure out the rest. I don't think it could have been done first.

Embarassed Oh, close enough for me I guess. Embarassed

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
stipend is right! drizjr in for the win!! Yay!!!

That one was cute once you know the answer. Bedad is the name of Krystyn's next band. "Verst " (see below) doesn't have the same ring to it.

The spacing here is as close as I can make it given the typeface of the book differs from our unfiction font.

XXIX

The reindeer fattens on my first,
     My second would disdain it;
An army marched full many a verst
To take my whole with gun and bay'net.

Heh.
I was stuck on who was doing the marching instead of where they were marching.
I'm reminded of those springs near my house, again.
Kings and springs and other wonderful things.

Reindeer don't have grass. they eat

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Moscow is correct! Great job, Rogi! I wouldn't think moss had enough nutrients to live on.

And the graph is fascinating. Now we are up to XXX!

This one is set up a little differently. There are three parts to this poem, with the divisions headed by little titles.

XXX

MY FIRST

I am a worm with fiery head,
My venom serves to wake the dead.

MY SECOND

Upon the ocean's verge I stand,
A seamark for a rugged land.

MY WHOLE

When Nature lay in silent sleep,
And Darkness brooded on the deep,
Before the morning stars had sung,
Or ever seraph's harp was strung,
Ere Brahma wakened from his dream,
Or Indra was, I reigned supreme.

I've been heading more down Booba's line of thinking - match, torch, wick, etc. Researching single syllable snakes with red heads didn't throw up anything useful so I'm inclined to think it's less literal than that, happy to be proved wrong though!

As for the second part - is this referring to a lighthouse again??

My whole - something which reigned supreme before all other gods, nature, etc. Nothing, oblivion, darkness...?

I got nothing.
Confused

I don't suppose he means that tequila that has a worm in it ? Wink

Shakespeare did refer to snakes as worms in the scene of Cleopatra's death, but his text has so many levels who knows exactly what he meant. I did think fiery head could just mean fangs that inject venom.

I wonder if the first and second are divided because they have more than one syllable?

Another thought, could it have to do with silence? I know he uses silent in the poem, but he does talk about sounds? Also, he specifically mentions things about India, which may have been much talked about in 1895.

Here is your hint, and use it well, this word has 9 letters.
