Hmm, despite limiting the possibilities I must confess that hasn't helped much. I hope someone else has a brainwave soon!

Re: XXXII

quoting just to have it on the current page of the thread:
rose wrote:
XXXII

To make my last upon my first,
   The poet's lyre oft is struck;
My whole, with fire-water cursed,
Loses his head and runs amuck.

and paraphrasing (this is how I try to work it out):

To make B on A, music is played? or a poem is read aloud?
(is the lyre specific? I found something about "shell" in reference to the original lyre)

Then, AB gets drunk and goes mad?
(shellshocked?)

With the hint for such a short length, my assumption is that the *sound* of each part is spelled out longer as individual words than they are as syllables in the whole.

well...

fire-water is the name for an alcoholic beverage among Native American Peoples
- I get that

A poet's lyre is often struck with a Plectrum, not the fingers
(Note: A plectrum is like a pick, like those for a guitar. Lyres weren't played with fingers like a harp.)

To take the last of plectrum
It contains alcohol...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Is it Rum?

Not
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
rum

I am wondering if poets lyre has to do with rhyming? rhyme? doesn't work because it is only one syllable, neither does chord, for same reason.

this may have to percolate over the weekend.

Going with musical notes and other names for lyre gives up some fun words:
harp-ee
(string) gut-cee
gue-ee

harpy, gutsy, gooey

Think we may be after a famous drinkers proper name?
Oscar Wilde?
Edgar (Allen Poe)?
Me at happy hour?

None of the ideas posted above by Booba are correct. I don't think they were actual guesses, but I wanted to be sure.

I don't think this is another "fen" - I'm not even sure where this one is going.

If it's correct I'll break down my thinking.

Our word should have 2 syllables.

Why does it have to have two syllables? I looked back and didn't see any explanation. I know it has two parts - a last and a first - but I didn't realize that was indicative of syllables. Is it? Just so I know for the future.

See the "monosyllables" quote in Rose's initial post:

Re: XXXII

once more unto the breach...

To make B on A,
something about poetry and/or music and/or the lyre
-- here i'm in a rut with short words: love, sea, air, wave, etc.

Together, AB means being cursed by alcohol,
-- here i've only got a few: besot, sotted, drunken, stagger, etc.

but then "loses its head" would mean to remove the first letter
to get the final word meaning "runs amok"
-- here are a few from the thesaurus: frenzy, wildly, berzerk, insane
-- I'm not sure whether "amuck" is an accepted spelling of the time
or a play on words for getting dirty.

nada

I'm out today so you guys get another day to think.

Let me know how long we should ponder on this one.

Also, would you rather have another hint? Or go on to the next charade?

I dislike giving out hints of choices for letters-only because with this crowd that is akin to handing over a part of a skeleton key - but I could mix some more letters in there?? And, I know you guys enjoy a challenge.

Let me know what you want. I am really enjoying playing these charades with my friends.
