Blatant drive-by...
I think a two-syllable analog for booba's guess would be
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
nightshade

Yes, Nightshade is correct! Good work booba and Rogi. You can see how I was sure my answer was right.

Another clever poem giving the attributes of the answer as well as the words themselves. And, next:

XL

When he who changed my first in vain
Dragged in my whole great Hector slain,
He vowed that dogs and crows should rend
The slayer of his dearest friend ;
But when old Priam sued to pay
The rites were due that bleeding clay,
The hero, melting at a father's woe,
Showed for my last what he denied his foe.

I am sure that is about Achilles, if anyone didn't know that. (Yes, I saw Troy...ok, not really, I read the book) But, I have nothing else.

Oh and hi Mikeyj! Good to see you again!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I'm thinking that "my last" might be king and "my first", rank giving us ranking, but that doesn't quite solve for "my whole", does it? The word ranking does bring rancor to mind. A good match for the whole, but what does it do for the last? Could that be cur?

Neither "ranking" nor " rancor" is correct.

I can't think of what Achilles changes?
And all I remember is that he dragged Hector's body around in the dust.

I have nothing more; I'm away this weekend, but I'll check in Monday morning. This one is a puzzle.

You too Rose Smile

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I'm currently thinking 'disgrace', but like drizjr's suggestion it still only fits two parts. This time the whole - dragged in disgrace, and grace is what he showed at the end (meaning pity perhaps) when he finally let's Priam have Hector's body back.

When he who changed dis in vain is a bit dodgy though. Dis was a god of the underworld, but I think he was Roman rather than Greek, and 'changing in vain' would refer to Achilles mother attempting to make him completely invulnerable, but failing. Not elegant enough to be right.

After quickly skimming through the Iliad I found that Achilles in some sense changed his armor. His original armor was stolen by his friend, Poly (something) who was killed (murdered by Hector) and I think Hector took that armor? Any way Achilles Mom (yay to Mom's but she is a bit overbearing) brings him a new set, a set made by the gods??

I am reading an older translation as well as going from memory..but it doesn't seem that Achilles "changes" armor - it is stolen and then replaced.

I may have missed something. Maybe the thing he changes is his mind (cause he makes up with Agamemnon) or his mood ( he decides to fight instead of weep??) or his friends? or maybe weapon?? It could be anything really. He also changes hector's mind because Hector stands to fight and then runs when he sees Achilles after all. Athena helps to fool Hector, but that may not be relevant.

Sorry for the poor summary. For goodness sakes, read it yourselves, these last few chapters of the Iliad are stunning reading and keep you on the edge of your seat even if you have seen the movie Troy (which is on demand for 1.99 here thanks to Time Warner- but it is too long for me to watch until I have more time)

It is late for me here so good night lovelies. Don't give up on this one.

One syllable possibilities for parts of armor: plate (breastplate), helm (helmet), shield, ... and for weapons: lance, mace, ...?

From Wikipedia: "Hector's father, Priam, went to Achilles' tent to plead with Achilles to permit him to perform for Hector his funeral rites." My guess for the second part is

age
, which he showed respect for, but denied to Hector by killing him.

As for Achilles changing something in vain, Wikipedia mentions that his mother tried to disguise him as a girl in order to hide him from Odysseus. "My first" could be

garb
and the whole would be

garbage

XLI

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Garbage is right! Good job Trillian, I didn't think of wikipedia as a source. I forgot about dressing Achilles as a girl. Even so, I don't think I would have gotten "garb". Just didn't come to mind.

That was a tough one! I wonder if the charades players were more intimately familiar with the classics then we are (or I mean, I am)? At least a copy of the Illiad and the Odyssey might have been handy on a shelf for them?

Let's try again:

XLI

I SHIPPED aboard the Betsy Jane ;
  My first was fresh and fair ;
We manned my whole and hove the chain ;
   The mate stood by to swear :
To hear him take God's name in vain
   Would raise a lubber's hair.

She stepped aboard the Betsy Jane ;
   My last was fresh and fair ;
We kissed, and hoped to meet again ;
   A rose was in her hair.
I kissed my sweetheart once again ;
   The mate forgot to swear.

The reference to the Betsy Jane comes from a fun poem by Bert Leston Taylor called "The Rime Of The Betsy Jane". One place it can be read on the web is this other old (1917) collection, Such nonsense!: an anthology edited by Carolyn Wells.

I'm stuck on the idea that the first might be dam (a form of dame) as a play on damn, but that hasn't gotten me anywhere. Instead, my guess is:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
miss + sun = mizzen, though it would work better if my first was my last and my last was my first. Smile
