Thanks, booba, your hint made me think of
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
teething

Which would be very literal indeed. I'd never thought of that as a 'cause of much disease', but then again I'm no expert with children...

BTW.: I don't know if it's forum-related or just my browser acting weird, but right now the spoilered text (including my answer) shows up as plaintext. Is anybody else having this problem?

XLVI

The spoiler tag doesn't seem to work for me either. I think I can safely say that
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
teething
is correct -even if the spoiler tag isn't working right now.

Allons

XLVI

If you are hungry as a bear,
And love the hermit's simple fare,
My second in my first prepare ;
That 't is my whole, you will declare.

Makes me think of

70 6f 74 70 69 65

but that would be pretty simple.

Spoiler isn't working, so i put my guess up in hex.

Now that spoilers are working again,( thanks for the quick fix Space!) I think your answer was:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
potpie

which is incorrect.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Pancake is incorrect!

Both of those seemed like good guesses to me; but I have no idea how close they are to being correct.

I don't know if it makes a difference but the last three lines seem slightly indented under the first. I can't tell if it is just the typeface or intentional? So it might be:

XLVI

If you are hungry as a bear,
And love the hermit's simple fare,
 My second in my first prepare ;
That 't is my whole, you will declare.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Cupcake or cuprum?

The latter is less likely as it sounds like were looking for a food and not a drink.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Not cupcake or cuprum

All of these are good guesses. I'm baffled myself about a hermit's simple fare? All of these things are simple.

I'll throw my half baked ideas into the stew.
How 'bout these?
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
pottage or panda

How about something more bear-related?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
panfish?

ETA: Or something more hermit-y?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Cottage Pie?

I'm going lateral (read: tenuous) with

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
crabshell - hermit is the crab link and dressed crab you serve in its shell

[Edit] And immediately I see that's wrong. It would be my first in my second, not second in my first.

nada

Those are all good guesses, sadly not one is correct.

And this is where I have to stifle my natural instinct to want to give a hint, as I said, I would not be a good PM.

Alrighty, i think i have the historical connection here, but it isn't giving me the answer yet
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
One famous hermit, St. Seraphim of Sarov, is depicted in works of art as sharing his meal with a bear.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seraphim_of_Sarov
hoping someone else can run with this

I'm willing to think on it some more before we get a hint. Resist, rose, resist. Wink
Maybe instead of kitchenware, it's the place we're "in"? A hermit might be cloistered in a...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
cell

As jessie1326 mentioned, a bear's favorite food...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
fish

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
cell + fish = selfish?

eta: Ooh, nice reference, catherwood!

Other than learning that many of the saints have a monastic soup associated with them, including,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"Seraphim soup"
...
I got nuthin'.
Not sure why I'm spoilerizing that, either.
