non-native speaker grabbing at straws
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Any chance that 'line' is a dialect- or old-style word for linnen or lining? Because, focusing on "But for my whole this counsel take, ...", my guess would be
guideline

I'm getting desperate here...

But for AAABBB this counsel take,
That clothing oft AAA will make.
By women would you be admired ?
Then in BBB be well attired.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
mistakes = (a) miss + steaks

I'll say it for you, "Groan!" Hey, it's no worse than my other ideas for the 2nd syllable:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
skin or nude!

Hey lovelies, I'm away for the weekend again.

See you on Monday.

(I'll wait for someone else to bring up the "h"-word.)

Have a great weekend everyone. Smile

Ok, it seems like the first word must be something like "man" based on the proverb and the second be an item of clothing/material. The whole I'm not entirely sure about but some sort of synonym for advice seems most likely.

One syllabled possibilities for the first and second:

First -
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Man, Lad, Male, Chap, Guy, Bloke, Dude, Lord, Prince, King, Earl...

Second -
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Clothes, Cloth, Suit, Shirt, Tie, Garb, Dress, Gear, Hat, Bow, Skin, Nude, Lace, Wool...

Two syllabled wholes -
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Advice, Counsel, Guidance, Guideline, Support, Assist...

Much of the above is permed from the guesses already posted, hopefully collating the ideas may prove useful. If not, I'm prepared to call for a hint.

(Edited to spoiler)

Great work Green Windmill!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Guidance is correct!!

Not quite sure how that works in the poem, but, you got it!

Maybe you should spoiler your guesses so that people working on this don't see them? I would do it, but I'm not a mod in this forum, I'll ask the admins if they can make me a mod of this subforum for that purpose.

Thanks, and, again, great work!!!

And the next one,, more syllables to work with this time..wonder if it makes it easier or harder to solve:

XLIX

My hair is falling down my first,
    I 'm sure I must a perfect fright be,
I think my corset lace has burst,
Oh, how I wish my third I might be !
For if my whole could work the spell,
Or some kind-hearted wizard hear me,
I 'd take my second in a shell,
I 'd play baseball and none would jeer me.
Without my skirts, how queer 't would seem ;
    No mouse would fright, no tramp appall me ;
'T would be just lovely as a dream.
And all the girls my fourth would call me.

Shocked Wow.

I didn't spoiler any of that as I wasn't actually putting those forward as genuine guesses - I wasn't even expecting Rose to check them!

That's actually pretty embarassing that I typed out the right answer and didn't even realise it!!!

Attempting a backsolve:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
But for GUIDANCE this counsel take,
That clothing oft (a) GUY will make.
By women would you be admired ?
Then in (a) DANCE be well attired.

Seems to fit now I think about it! Laughing

Definitely easier. 99% sure I've got this one straight away but it doesn't seem fair to leap in and take this one before anyone else has even had a chance. The only part of this one I don't yet understand is "my second".

Edit - done a little research and now understand "my second". 100% sure now! Very Happy

greenwindmill:

I wasn't sure you were posting the list as answers either. But because Trillian had posted
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
guideline
as a guess, and I checked it, I knew that
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
at least the first 4 letters of guidance
were correct. So, when I saw
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
guidance
in your list - that is why I checked that answer. I'm so glad you got it right!.

I'm more inclined to credit that one to Microsoft Word's Thesaurus function! Laughing

That's what I settled on for the second too - seems to fit quite nicely I think.
