I see how VII worked, now.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Most of the middle is just pointing to "ancient" Rome.
Where Myrrh was something of great value and had to be brought from far away.

The first part of this one seems to be alluding to another plant sap. "Pitch", Used for millennia to seal cracks in ship's hulls.

But, I would have expected that 2nd line to have an indent, since, so far, they have when continuing a thought.

I checked the spacing and it is correct as presented.

Ahhh, thanks Rogi

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I had "Myrrh" coming from a "farm" , which bothered me.

The answer to VIII popped up on a Google search of key words, I would not of gotten it otherwise. I won't print it outright because it's worth the effort!
The answer so nice they say it twice.

Ancbyrba: "Fpengpu n Ehffvna naq lbh jvyy svaq n Gnegne"

I won't move on to number IX til someone posts the exact answer to VIII. I can't check if the answer is right without the exact guess in front of me. And, as an aside, I think we may be compiling slowly the only archive of answers and explanations to answers to these charades that now exists, at least online anyway.

Maybe someone else wants a try? boobs left lots of hints.

Anyway, I'm away Monday to Wednesday - so I may not check in. On the other hand I'm traveling alone, so I may stop in for some company. Either way, if someone else wants to forage ahead with posting from the pdf, go for it.

Heh, That explains the not indenting of the 2nd line.
So, I should have said, "Pitchpitch" But that makes no sense.
Then I learned that when people say pitch when describing the caulking for boats, they should be saying:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"tar"
I've heard of "pine tar", but didn't know what it was, exactly.

So, the proper answer, for Rose, is:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Tartar

Here's number IX

I SOUGHT my first in starry skies
 Where shines the April sun ;
My second came before my eyes,
And warned me to be done.

'T is very hard to lose one's sight ;
 I 'm blind as bat or mole ;
Once hills and fields were my delight,
Now I 'm no more my whole.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
April starry skies could be The Ram or The Bull

booba: thanks for picking this up. I was away longer than I thought.

No solve for this one yet? The way you guys were going, I though all 100 would be solved by my return ( j/k)

It doesn't go anywhere for part 2, but I thought it interesting that booba's hints for part one, combined, could be:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
RAMBLE

Ahhh, your guess put me on to something.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Ram- Zodiac sign for most of April.
Blur- Came before my eyes.

"rambler"- He used to ramble across the fields, now he can't.

number X

Woo. A joint effort for a correct answer.

The next one is short and sweet:

      X
My first is high,
  My second damp,
My whole a tie,
  A writer's cramp.

let me know if you want a hint -- the number of letters for the answer...or a choice of first letters...as you know, the answers aren't published.

Sadly, nothing's clicking on this one, for me beyond the old, "What's high in the middle and round on both ends?" riddle.

The only idea I had was that the High could relate to high C (the note) or the high seas?

of course there is also high tea..

Tell me what kind of hint helps the most for this...

ok...I was wrong...I got this answer inadvertantly by googling
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
fo r writer's cramp (i was looking for synonyms) Since no one guessed, I thought I would go ahead and post this.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://210.38.32.195:81/newenglish2/Readings/Miscellaneous/riddles.htm

My first is high,
My second damp,
My whole a tie,
A writer's cramp.
Hyphen. The first two lines yield high-fen. A hyphen is used by a writer to tie (or cramp) two words together.

Man... Who were these people? I feel like we're going backwards on the IQ scale, over time. Look at the writings of the founding fathers, sometime, too.

P.S. It turns out that a hyphen is another word for a masonry(brick) "tie".
