we are halfway through already! Good job!!!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Necromancer is correct!! Great work booba!!

And now, drum roll please, we have arrived at our 50th charade. Like all my favorites, this one has a literary reference:

L

Happy the man whose dreams by night
No cares disturb, no fears affright,
Whose conscience pats him on the head,
And puts him in God's arms to bed.
Unlike him Scotland's guilty queen
Who walked in sleep with hand unclean
Not all the waters of my first
Could wash away the spot accursed ;
Not all the water in my whole
Could cleanse my second from her soul.

well I know it isn't Arabia - all the water in Arabia might actually be less than all the perfume. Smile

Did people wander off and have a good long weekend?

Here's how I would solve it, even without knowing the meaning of one part:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Unlike him Scotland's guilty queen
Who walked in sleep with hand unclean
(This is Lady MacBeth, from "out, damned spot!" fame)

Not all the waters of (a) DEN
Could wash away the spot accursed ;
Not all the water in DENMARK
Could cleanse (the) MARK from her soul.

(yeah, I know that "something is rotten in the state of Denmark" is from Hamlet and not Macbeth, but Shakespeare was my inspiration.

now to justify the one part with a definition.

Why can only she see the spot?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Now what can we wash up in..

re: L possible answer

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Assuming the Waters/water thing is "sea", how about
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
seaman or semen
provided it's appropriate to say the 2nd part is something you can wash away from a woman's soul.

Not too happy with it, but the best I got, so far.

Equally unlikely are
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
season, sebum, cebum

ETA:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
season
may not be too far afield. If it's okay to use
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
sin
for the 2nd.

I think booba has already solved this, but didn't care to demonstrate:
booba wrote:

The answer is surely:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
BASIN, BAY and SIN

(and I see we have a new captcha for guest posts)

Gah! it was "water in my WHOLE".

I feel kinda stupid, now.
I'm obviously still not up to this after all the taking on other people's jobs at work.
Good job, booba!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
basin is correct! Great work catherwood! And season was a good guess too, Rogi. And booba as well.

Wagons Ho!

LI

'Twas bitter cold, the sky was gray,
   And night was falling fast,
When, as I took my homeward way,
   I chanced upon my last.

I lifted up the little waif
   My first, and almost dead ;
Beneath my cloak I clasped it safe ;
"'T will please my whole," I said.

And I remembered as I went
The text in the New Testament,
How sparrows have a Father's care,
   Another whole is every hair.

This one came easily for a change. Smile I don't understand the " Another whole is every hair" part, but rest fits nicely.

chilled + wren = children

not just children, though I thought that was right. Now I think I know what the hair reference means, but I can't get it to fit either.

edited to for more correctness Smile ~rose

The bible reference I found is Luke 12:7: "...Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered..."
My guess is NUMB + BEAR => NUMBER

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Children is a brilliant answer!!

The last section gave it away for me - New Testament and every hair can only lead to...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
NUMBERED
which almost identically follows drizjr's thinking
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
NUMB - BIRD

Edit - looks like Trillian got in there just as I was posting, marginally different answer but essentially the same.
