I like your solution better, GreenWindmill, it's closer to the quote! Cool

Good job, GreenWindmill and Trillian!
Hmm, but I wonder if the solution is meant to be both; the operative words "Another whole" , so that the poem reads:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
'Twas bitter cold, the sky was gray,
And night was falling fast,
When, as I took my homeward way,
I chanced upon (a) wren.

I lifted up the little waif
Chilled, and almost dead ;
Beneath my cloak I clasped it safe ;
"'T will please (the) children," I said.

And I remembered as I went
The text in the New Testament,
How sparrows have a Father's care,
Numbered is every hair.

I am enjoying these riddles so much. Thanks again, rose, for bringing them to us.

LII

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Drizjr is brilliant. I didn't understand the key with both answers, anyway children and numbered are correct!!! Sorry if I confused anyone by saying children was incorrect. And good work Greenwindmill and Trillian, numbered was the answer that came to me because of the verse, but I had no idea how it could fit. Now I see that a "chilled wren" is just a "numb bird"!

And, next!

LII

Fast through my last our vessel sails,
  All snug aloft, the topsails set,
  Sou'westers glistening in the wet,
The combings flying o'er the rails.

It lifts a little on our lee,
   Rings out the lookout's warning shout,
  Sharp comes the order, "Put about."
How near my first appears to be!

'Twas there the Dreadnought left her bones;
  I hear the seabird's plaintive dirge,
  And loud the breakers and the surge
Repeat my whole in dismal tones.

This may be the ship?

http://bit.ly/9Q86cy

Which leads to a guess of
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
hopeless

which is also my odds of being right.

PS: I got a big kick out of "chilled wren"
Sounds like a blender drink.

To have thought of both
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"chilled wren" and "numb bird"
on the front side of the effort is what amazes me most about that one. How many puzzle people, these days even attempt to go that far? Maybe he had good playtesters.

As for this one, I never knew "combings" could be waves or breakers.

The first almost has to be
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"Reef", "Shoal" or "key"
given the Dreadnought clue. (Good catch on the capitalization, there, booba.).

Most likely, the former, making my guess:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"Reef" + "Rain" = Refrain

Refrain is correct! Good job Rogi and an assist from Booba!

This one is a change of pace - no discription of "my first", "my last" or "my whole."

LIII

Explain this riddle if you can ;
A bird and beast once made a man ;
That man begat a numerous race
Devoid of every Christian grace.
It makes me shudder in my shoes ;
His children in their blood he brews

The last 2 words seem like a clue. But I got stuck forever on Abraham. Which doesn't fit any of the rest of the riddle. Thinking about it more, I tried to make it go with other obvious "not so nice" people like Cain with similar results. Then I hit upon

Jacob

Jacob is correct! I'm so glad that he brews turned out to really mean Hebrews, the book of the bible. I thought that charade sounded creepy. Good work Rogi!!

LIV

My first is headgear of Ismail ;
My last rebukes the lazy sinner ;
Hang up my total by the tail,
And when it falls, ask me to dinner.

So I got this one from the whole and worked backwards. You hang a
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
PHEASANT before you eat it, this improves the flavour (apparently). When it's ready the tail feathers will be easy to remove.

Having got that, it was easy to see

FEZ, the hat

and
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
ANT, from the fable about the Grasshopper I presume.

LV

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Pheasant is correct! Good work cjr22!! I would not have guessed "ant" as a rebuke to lazy sinner, those grasshoppers had all the fun anyway.

Another short one this time:

LV

Say not my first your guessing power transcends,
You have it almost at your fingers' ends ;
Nor for my second Russian realms explore,
Since you can find it at your very door ;
And one, the leader of a wandering band,
Can beat my whole with time-defying hand.

Nailhead
would seem to fit, but because there's no homophonic component, that's probably not it.[/spoiler]

Forward march!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
You have it almost at your fingers' ends- quick
Since you can find it at your very door- step (Russian steppes)

LVI

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Quickstep is right, is it a terrible pun if I credit John Phillip booba? although maybe that isn't how booba is pronounced. Good work, I forgot about the quick of the nails.

This next looks fairly straightforward..any new guessers out there in the woodwork willing to try this one?

LVI

My first applauds an actress nice,
My second catches men and mice,
My whole is just a cheap device.
