I have still no idea how to solve this one. There are too many possibilities for part two and the few ideas I have for the first part don't fit with any of them. So yes, I could use some help, but I don't think that the number of letters would bring me any closer to the solution. Bang Head

Does anyone of you know website where I can look up out-of-date/obsolete words?

Best i've got is salt/mine, which is not good.

Going back to what drizjr posted, if "my second" and "my first" stand alone as printed, then "my perfect whole" could stand alone also, meaning a word of any number of syllables not tied to anything.
What is (was) taught to make a (perfect) whole?

Ok, so it's been a week now with no activity or ideas, I realise it has been a holiday weekend in the US but I'm guessing everyone's pretty much stumped on this one. Much as I don't want to be the first to buckle I think I'm at the point where a hint would be useful...

ok, i'll toss out another random guess
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
being stuck on MATE for the 2nd half, and having already failed with HELPMATE and SOULMATE, i'll add LIFEMATE.

I'd take a hint, if it were possible to see if i'm at least half right.

Here's my guess, although the first part doesn't make too much sense:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
vitamine

I second that.

Hi lovelies!!! * rose * waves madly. I missed you guys but didn't have a way to get online. (I don't have an iphone, though maybe I should get an itouch? The data plan plus taxes for the iphone coupled with spotty service around here is too expensive.)

Sorry sorry sorry. I dropped my laptop, cracked the screen and then had to go to Ohio unexpectedly. Anyway, I was just --yesterday-- able to pick up my repaired (and working great) laptop.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
So, I guess I can tell you that it doesn't look like mate pr any word with m--e is part of the answer.

I'm not sure what kind of hint will move this forward.

Time to get out the thesaurus, i suppose. I wonder if they had other words a century ago for one's dead first wife. Maybe 'second' isn't a noun, but a verb, as in, "Would she be wed?" (just brainstorming, not a guess, not worth putting a spoiler tag around)

allons??

So I am willing to skip to the next one and revisit LX after we get to 100??...since a long time has gone by...should I post the next riddle?

Everyone is stuck on this one. And, the point of these riddles is to have some timewasting fun. So I am ready to move on to the next, but only if other people are as well.

LXI
let's make up the rules as we go along

what the heck, I'm feeling impatient and impetuous so here's the next one:

LXI

Without me women would become my first ;
(Won without wooing how could they be dear ?)
My second, if the storm in fury burst,
Makes each red flash a redder flash appear,
The wind's sad moan a sadder moan to hear.
My whole, presented oft to childhood's view,
Less frequent seen as each succeeding year
Illusions vanished make emotions few,
Is still to Youth or Age a wonder ever new.

Don't read until you pick his words apart!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
With out me ...wo(me)n - won
makes red into redder, sad into sadder- der (duh!)
Has to be wonder, even though it's also in the description...

Glad to move on from LX.

LXII

booba is right!
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
wonder is correct
Smart booba, very smart!

Sorry I didn't see your post, I thought everyone had abandoned our thread here because I was gone so long. And then I got depressed about watching the thread. Glad you agree about putting LX in the rear view mirror!

Let's keep this rolling! I do so enjoy watching you guys solve these!
PS "hight" is the correct word from the poem-not a misspelling.

LXII

With all his imperfections on his head,
My second to my first untimely fled ;
My whole a lady hight who scorned to wed ;
Of both in Shakespeare you have surely read.

LXII

untimely end / demise / grave / visit / fate / passing ... What else can be untimely?
I've been looking at several lists with female Shakespeare characters, but can't find a lady whose name includes one of those words.

Re: LXII

Time for my not-yet-patented technique:
Quote:
With all his imperfections on his head,
BBBBB to AAAAA untimely fled;
AAABBB [is] a lady [named] who scorned to wed ;
Of both in Shakespeare you have surely read.

my first thoughts, on the beginning part:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Cain had his mark, an external imperfection which announced to the world his internal imperfections; Cain fled to Nod to start a new life.
I've had no luck turning those syllables into a lady's name or moniker, and know nothing about a particular Shakespeare character who refused to wed. (also, my spoiler character wasn't in shakespeare's works, afaik)
