not atonement..I think sin might be the first syllable.

At least "sin" fits the key for the first three letters.

I can give you another hint if needed. the total number of letters, or a choice of letters for the 4th letter?

As you guys well know, I don't have the final answers just a key/grid to use to check if letters are correct.

I don't want to speak for anyone else but a clue would be great as I am absolutely stumped on this one. Been playing catch up today and working through the last few puzzles I managed to solve or get close to each of the solutions but I can't even begin this!

Been coming up with a whole list of words which may be rewarded - persistence, patience, perseverence, etc. Only word I can think of beginning with "sin" which may be rewarded would be "sincerity" but there's no way that fits with the rest of the riddle.

Approaching from the other angle and trying to determine the component parts has been just as unproductive.

In short - clue please!

Fen!

I vote for number of letters please Rose.

I'm done with starting with "sin". No three syllable words show up that fit anything else. Could be something real archaic though. Fen! Fen!

Edit: Whoa, two clues in one. Thanks Rose, we need some help on this one.

Seems to confirm the second as "you" or "us". Maybe.

Industry?

That has the right number of letters (and syllables), can be rewarded and fits in terms of "us". Can't make "ind" or "try" fit the other clues though.

This is shameful, I'm basically trying to brute force this thing now!

If you look at the 2nd as "dust" that could work. But Hoarding Rye isn't ringing any bells and the first part would be a real stretch with "in".

ETA:Doing a little brute forcing, myself, I can find nearly 10k words that are 8 letters and have one of the 5 listed in position 4.

Yeah, I looked at in-dust-re
Don't like it much, but the glove seems to fit.

We also know that letters 1,2, and 3 are either s, i, n, or by extrapolation d or x. (Number the letters we have)

So, based on that...
Quote:

the word has 8 letters

the 4th letter is either: A, F, K,P or U

..and the original riddle...
Quote:

When to my second men confide
My third that they have hoarded,
It is my first, and if they bide
My whole will be rewarded.

It could be any of the following:

sinapism
sinfonia
sinfonie
sinfully
sinkable
sinkages
sinkhole
sinuated
sinuates
sinusoid

... buh? None of those words seem to fit the riddle, though.

The first three can be in any order, including d, x. "sin" is kinda ruled out, as you say.

Given booba's criteria
Code:
issa????
nnif
dddk
xxxp
   u

I still have a list of 60 possibles, form "indigate" through "issuance".
So, it should be a word starting with "in" or "is".
And, frankly, though it isn't one I can connect cleanly to the clues, "industry" seems to be the best of the lot.
Should I post all 60?

I've been following along and sit amazed at the brilliant minds that are solving these elegant charades. You guys rock!
I'm relieved to learned that checking the key in the back of the book isn't considered a no-no for this thread; it's often the first place I look when frustrated.
From the preface of the book...
Quote:
To give an answer to a riddle is like explaining a joke, — something never to be done, unless reluctantly, and with averted face, as Strato held the sword for Brutus to fall upon.

But as we all like to be told when we are right, and as the first answer that suggests itself may not be the one that fits best, I have prepared a key by which any guess may be confirmed if correct or rejected if wrong. The mathematical mind that is better at exhausting combinations than at catching allusions may use it as a last resort to obtain a solution.

To start fair let me state that my charades are all accurate either to the sound or to the spelling, but not necessarily to both, and that the parts into which my words are divided are all monosyllables.

I'm wondering if William Bellamy extended those rules to the key as well. Could it be that the answers might also be written "accurate either to the sound or to the spelling"? That would be sneaky, sneaky ol' Will!

If that's opened for consideration; here's a possibility:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
When to us men confide
ore that they have hoarded,

It is (a) sin, and if they bide
My whole will be rewarded.

sin-us-ore fits in the key, but I can't find that word in any online dictionary. It does sound like
cynosure [sahy-nuh-shoor, sin-uh-] 1. something that strongly attracts attention by its brilliance, interest, etc
2.something serving for guidance or direction.

It works in an obtuse way, but I think it's a long shot especially since none of the other answers worked this way.

Oh, and thank you, rose, for sharing your discovery!

Nice try, drizjr.
I guess anything's possible.

In hoping the list that booba defined and I derived could spark a different take I'm spoilering it, below (Is there a way to spoiler the code tag?).

Maybe the linked diagram will help us remember what could be possible. I never noticed the "monosyllables" part before. That's a help, overall.

well, it looks like
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
industry
fits...I didn't try it with any of the other guesses yet. I'll look at them in the morning. I''m still not sure how that answer works....but...on to XV.

XV
My first bends graceful by a spring;
  My last has conquered many a king;
My whole to gales and frost and snow
  Of Winter adds another woe.

PS. Drizjr!!! You are very welcome! I'm just glad that people enjoy these riddles; and, I'm even happier they can solve them.
While googling the author and book, I discovered he wrote 5 of these little gems. But let's just tackle the first 100 riddles first. Smile

PPS. I think from now on I should start with just the number of letters ina word! You guys don't need much more than that, and, I don't want to inadvertently put up too much of the grid. I'm going back and deleting the second hint I gave for this one.

Good luck on XV

Woot!
One of those ones that drop into place like dominoes.

I have 3 springs within a 10 minute walk from my house.
Mostly, they're surrounded by a covering of moss. But moss doesn't bend gracefully.
The next most abundant thing is a

, which does.
Given that, there's a really easy step to the 2nd part that, like a lot of these riddles, wasn't in the list of options you were initially thinking of.

So, I'd be surprised to find out it wasn't
