@catherwood I'll probably go to both the SF and Oakland events.

Seventh Floor

Is that a Ply in the water of the dunk tank? Also looks like possible sign language in the ripples of the water.

residents names and other clues
haven't seen these connections mentioned anywhere so thought I'd share

Bevel Ternky - would seem to be an allusion to a Bevel Turnkey - and the clockwork machination that makes the whole story run

Jigsy Squonk - Floor 7

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A squonk is a fictional being originating from the forests of pennsylvania that is also some how transmutable by tears - this ties in with The Alchemist's tear mutation as well. Also the Heinz bottle on the table - Heinz is headquartered in Pittsburg, also in Pennsylvania, the bottle is incorrect though it should be 57 varieties so why 56?

Is Sigfried an allusion to Siegfried and Roy famous animal trainers? Plumpjack is a famous restaurant chain/winery out in SF (where some of the authors are based)

The main author is originally from VA which I would think strengthens the VA area connection on the first floor. There is a model of the Washington Monument on his table as well.

Ida Mayfield -
The number 50 is visible on the game slot machine on floor 11. She also has twenty dollar bills, one dollar bills and tens but no fives anywhere? Significant in the absence? Someone mentioned talk of the donuts being a chain - how about the yellow submarines in her bathroom?

Gen Klobberduck -
a Klobberduck is a character from the N64 Donky Kong game series - Kremlin class enemy - an alligator in a barrel that sounds like Daffy Duck when it talks.

Rosa Tse-Levy - Rose (colored glasses) and Tse-Levy as C'est La Vie (that's life?)... why does she get called Ms Sweet in the book?

In the sand
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
- are the stool, snake and spider referring to legs? The stool has 3, the snake could be interpreted as none or an ampersand or an infinity symbol in lieu of no legs, and the spider only has 7 legs. Or 3 & 7 = 10, or 1+0 = 1?

Also - the building is on 23 Glyph street is that some sort of code? The picture on the first page also shows a sign under Glyph for B683...

There are a lot of hidden lemons throughout the book as well - it seems to be a recurring theme.

I think there is some connection to who stole what from whom, and what to find for where in the story as well - to focus too much on only the pictures could give you the right coordinates but for the wrong state etc.

Does anyone have any clue what Bert D'Grnp is referencing? I can't figure that one out - children's book so I was thinking something with Bert and Ernie but that makes no sense and the only mime I know of that is a Bert is in Marry Poppins.

Bless you, sir, bless you! Knowing that I didn't have a book signing to attend this weekend, but not wanting to wait until May 13 for my event, I went out to a Books Inc and bought a copy. I'll use this one for marking up, and buy another at Hicklebee's to have a signed copy for the archives. Mine is nicely flat, not warped, btw.

I've been tempted to read every post on every forum and wiki, but I'd like some time to look at the book with my own eyes first and get my own impressions. Some of the fun I get out of these hunts is in the spark of spotting patterns and hidden elements. It is a mystery after all, and I wouldn't want to read it with a cheat sheet.

Just ordered our copy of the book. Happy to be directing energy at something fun like this!

So today I saw on twitter that McSweeney's had released some new book information on their iPhone app, so I paid the $ (grr) and downloaded it. Sure enough, there is a thing with pictures of the 13 "stolen" objects, one from each floor. If I knew how, I would get them off my phone and upload the pictures, but FYI there are a couple of differences from what I've been assuming:

For the metronome stolen from the 4th floor, the illustration shows a more old-fashioned metronome with one of those pendulum thingies that rock back and forth. That's nothing like the thing I thought was the metronome on the 1st floor.

For the 'anti-gravity' boots stolen from the 9th floor, we are told in the book that they look like green galoshes, which is why the assumptions that these are the green galoshes in the foyer on the 8th floor. Well the picture from the app shows something that's more like thick astronaut boots, mostly white with red striping up the ankle part.

And for the 11th floor, there's a picture of the elusive zucchini. It's nice and green. I still can't find it anywhere in the book.

Here's the link for the app: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mcsweeneys/id325330901?mt=8

@danteIL: take a screenshot from the phone by pressing both buttons at once?

I've been meaning to join up on this. I couldn't go to the L.A. event though so I forgot about getting the book. Will do quickly.

Well, I figured out how to do it, thanks!, but after thinking about it, I'm hesitant to post them here because of Mcsweeney's ownership rights, given that I'm grabbing them from a paid app.

Most of these have already been found, though.

double post:

For you San Francisco peeps, here's a link to the announcement information about the Book Event this weekend, along with a strange interview with Gus Twintig. The interview seems more jokey than clue-eriffic, but "exclusive clues" are promised at the book release party!

And another article on Salon.com about the book/hunt [including a quote from our own morbus!]:

Okay, I just got the book but I'm at work so I can't really do much with it right now. Can you guys keep a secret? I bought a copy for ineffabelle and I'm gonna visit her in the hospital tonight and give it to her. I figure she could use something fun to do right about now. So hopefully she'll bite and be on here later!

@danteIL: hey, thanks! I had gotten a Google Alert on that article, but had yet to read it :D
@danteIL: What's even funnier is that I /work/ at the Examiner(.com)!

@faeryqueen21: that's a *great* idea! Give her my wishes.

Will do DanteIL!

Just going to document the numbers across the boxes on the 5th floor.

1,6,6,5,3,5,9,4,8,3,2,8,9,4,4,4

The first 6 could also be a 9 if the box was faced up according to the arrows. It's too long to be a phone number and I tried putting them into T9 to see if they spelled anything with no luck. Maybe some else can see a pattern that I don't.

I only looked at the pictures online. Floor 6 (with the Oh-Hi-Oh pictures on the wall and the toilet) could possibly reference the tiny town of Flushing, OH.
