I received this clue directly from Eli after asking what the clue was. Since I was talking to the gentleman at the time, it felt wrong to shove a videocamera in his face to record the moment. I did reconfirm and then immediately tweet the phrase.

In addition, I was assured that the clue was very good, it would be almost completely unhelpful.

Good Luck, Junior Deducers!

Thank you for sharing this! 55,558 anagrams found, according to the website. Could the keyword be "bed"? "Nine"? "Observed"? "Bordering"? Could be another long day with the anagram website....

Unless Eli can anagram in his head, I think it's highly unlikely that this is an anagram. He pretty much came up with the clue on the spot after I noted that they hadn't mentioned a clue.

The most obvious meaning, whether that's what is referring to on not, is the "GIDEON - 1.0" that appears in the main room on the Ninth Floor. I don't know that anyone has nailed down what that part of the illustration was supposed to be pointing to. Perhaps this is a nudge to help us figure that out.

Also, Ariock, since you've been to a couple of release parties, do you think you could give us a brief run-through of how they go? Or perhaps highlight any differences, if any, between the two you went to?

'gideon was never born' might have the same meaning as the 'gideon - 1.0' sign on the tv...

the word 'eon' can refer to life or the quality of life, or it could be an anagram of 'one'. gideon minus one, or gideon without life, would leave gid...which is dig backwards. maybe this is a clue as to where/how to dig for the number that relates to the ninth floor?

Could be that the Gideon on the screen/display is referring not to a human (and thus, born) named Gideon but some inanimate Gideon out there (not born).
Of course, now I've been going back and forth about fictional Gideons being born or not, because there is something compelling about the wikipedia provided possibility of Gideon of Scotland Yard.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gideon_of_Scotland_Yard

There's something I like that is very elegant about what mycroft7 said it could be too.

I claim San Jose! I was perfectly willing to drive the hour to (and back from) San Francisco -- I did it for the book "A Treasures Trove" -- but San Jose is so much closer to me, and I love Hicklebees, happy to support them. But May 13 is too long for me to wait for the book, I'll probably have to track it down at a store before then. This is definitely my kind of addiction.

oh nuts, it's at 3pm on a Thursday? Hmm, better schedule a vacation day from work. Such a sacrifice, I know.

Were you able to make it? Any word on the clue?

I should maybe let catherwood respond to this but apparently the clue was:

Burnt Norton

Ah yes, thank you for bumping the topic to remind me -- I did indeed attend the book event near me, and I completely enjoyed myself -- and yes that was the clue, thank you for posting it. It was spoken, not written out, and Eli (one of the authors) repeated it aloud a few times, and did spell it out for us too, so that is indeed the correct reference. T.S. Eliot did write a poem by that name, and I do think that is all we're to take away from it. My feeling is that these book event clues are not supposed to be of any extra help, not in the sense of being additional clues to the treasure, but are perhaps nudges -- as well as added incentive to get people out to attend the promotional events. I'm calling them "pointer clues" to bring us back to the book itself. Eli referred to the book as a "case file", a document which records the scene as the detective found it. Roy Dodge or Gus Twintig already put into the book all they learned about the residents; our authors are merely their representatives, wink wink.

From the Corte Madera signing, the clue is:

The best defense is a good rail fence.

also, the floor number may not correspond to the clock number the floor resident stole.

sorry, no, it was
Code:
F BRSJ OIIUAYT S ZT
the spacing was critical, and broke down to a rail cipher (hence the other hint for a "rail fence")
Code:
F_BRSJ_OIIUAYT_S_ZT

F       _       B    = F_B
 R     S J     _ O   = RSJ_O
  I   I   U   A   Y  = IIUAY
   T _     S _       = T_S_
    Z       T        = ZT

FRITZ IS JUST A BOY

F.R.I.T.Z. 9000 and GIDEON 1.0 are the names on the computers on the Ninth Floor.

The Baltimore signing was a fun time. There were about 15 attendees (including 2 gorilla-suited treasure hunters!) and the clue was:

Fiveway is the wrong way.

Hi and sixth floor

Hi all,

My curiosity has been piqued by this hunt (not least because catherwood, UKVer2.0 and others are pursuing it) and I am now in possession of a copy of the book. There are many more posts over on tw***ve but they are a little unfocused. Having said that, this hunt is reminiscent of "A Treasure Trove", which sparked that site off and is the origin of its name.

The only solutions I have seen that I am convinced by are Oh-Hi-Oh and Connect-Eye-Cut, and I think that we are simply looking for state/highway/mile on each page. Given all the numbers, there must be a way of knowing when a particular number is a highway or mile somehow.

I have looked at the sixth floor in some detail since we have the state and it is the least cluttered. I can't see anything in the entrance hall, talking room or bathroom (other than oh-hi-oh) that seems to be a puzzle, but the main room has a few possibilities.

The shading of the planks is surely deliberate, given that they are not shaded in the bathroom. The black/white nature of the room suggests some sort of binary code, although arguably some of the planks are different shades. I think that some of the white square tiles are also slightly shaded, e.g. the left-hand white tile along the windowed wall, and the second white tile in the second-last row.

Focusing on the planks first, the main problem is that it is not that clear which are shaded and which are not. Assuming that this can be decided, what binary codes are available? I can think of:
ASCII
Morse code
Bar code

Any other suggestions?
