Email to Frank:

Just got the cute blue bunny. It is adorable. Looked at it critically thinking there might be some information being passed on with it but couldn't come up with anything.

Working on decoding a part of the website: 2240117814bc5186b7ca52

224-011-7814 could be a phone number, but it leads to Illinois. Is it possible that the booksellers have a link that far north?

Response: It possible, but when I was in we never talked to anybody up there. My
guess would be that number is just part of the metadata for whatever
template they used to put the site together.

Yeah, the bunny was simply your prize for winning. Think of it as a memento.

In response to a question about file:///Macintosh HD/Users/lacy/Desktop/2240117814bc5186b7ca52/contact.html

Hm... Again, I've never heard of Lacy, but based on the nature of that directory, (none of The Booksellers use a Mac) my guess is the boss forced ol' Vicky to hire someone to get some semblance of a site going. He's a stubborn man, but when the boss tells him to do something, he does it. In the rare event they hire any outside help, they usually keep communication to a minimum and then totally alienate the contractor when the work is finished. So, again, this is just inference, but this Lacy is probably not worth reading into.

Sorry for double-post. Got this about an hour ago and have placed an order for the book.

Quote:

First off, it would appear The Booksellers have gotten their site running well enough to start accepting orders, so you can try ordering one of the books if you want. But I think I found something that could take the guesswork out of the process.

I managed to intercept an e-mail between two of the members that sounds like a normal conversation, but I actually understood as their code to request a particular book so it can be shipped and the message inside can be covertly passed along.

Somebody will need to order this book and have it sent to them so whoever initiated this process doesn't start to notice nothing has happened. Don't worry, whoever is physically shipping it won't be concerned with the address of the person requesting the book itself. The Booksellers use a hierarchical, need-to-know-basis system of revealing its big picture operations.

It looks like all you need to do is go to Sunshine's site, enter the necessary contact info and the coupon code BEWARETHEIDES. I don't know what book they'll send, but the coupon code should be enough for you to not even need to enter a book title upon ordering. They'll take care of the rest.

Good luck.

-Frank

Re: "I would like to order the next one, if nobody minds."

Be my guest.
But please remember to use the "BCC:" option when addressing emails.
That way we don't all see each other's email addresses.
Frank should be using it in his/her email headers, too.
Not so bad when there's only five of us, but these things get out of hand fast, if not kept in mind.

Yep, it's okay with me, too. Sorry if I am being a puzzle hoarder. I'll withhold from placing orders until we've all had a chance to receive something.

I've got a scanner at work so if I need to scan anything once the book gets here it may take a day. I'll upload pictures in the meantime. I have a feeling the book will get here today or maybe tomorrow. Since I live so close the UTD, it should take a day to receive mailed items.

Insiders,

Call me cheesy, but the occasion may arise when I need to refer to you by a code name. In honor of our good friend, the Russian artist, I derived these from Russian folklore.

Hilary: Baba Yaga
Joey: Ivanushka
Mr. Toasty: Father Frost
Mike: Fenist
Rogi: Brother Wolf

Interesting. So Franks codename is "Cheesy" from now on, K? Wink

Or is it...czeezi?

I wonder if the artist he's referring to is Ivan Bilibin, the famous Russian folk tale artist.

Oooh, maybe...I looked up his illustrations and I found pictures of his for all the stories our names are featured in, except for "Brother Wolf." That name seems to be from a story "Sister Fox and Brother Wolf," and I couldn't find an illustration for it...

Oh, and did you see the Baba Yaga illustration on that Wikipedia page? Haha, that's me all right! Smile

My GF just texted me to say I got a package today. I'll be sure to post as soon as I get home and open it.

Ok so I got the book and it's chalk full of puzzle goodness. So here we go!

First the addressee is

SB4L
1300 Commerce St
Dallas, TX 75202

I looked up the address but it doesn't seem to exsist. The envelope had a pretty cool handmade inkstamp on the front (pictures to come later).

On to book.

The book itself is a hardbound copy of By Dawn's Early Light by Philip Shelly. The book did not have a dustjacket and it is a remainder book (noted by a black mark on the bottom)

The front endsheet has a hand-drawn SB4L logo. The Back endsheet has the initials -SB

The next thing I noticed was a series of "bookmarks" stuck between several of the leaves; they are small printed cards with a joke on the front and a punchline on the back. The punchlines are revealed via scratch-off. Most all of punchilnes have been scratched off. The bookmarks are found between pages:
Code:

32-33, 56-57, 180-181, 378-379 and between the last page and the back endsheet

I'll post pictures later.

The second thing I noticed was the there were some hand-written numbers after a couple of the page numbers. After scouring the whole book, the only two page numbers with numbers written after were pages 32 and 96 and it looked like 32.782187 and 96.76687

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
32.782187, -96.76687 works out to the geographical coordinates for a bar in downtown Dallas called The Amsterdam Bar.

The last thing I noticed was that on pages 99-107, several words have been scratched out in ink. The first letter of each of the words was left unscratched. The words are Asians, moving, seal, The, Excersises, reads, did, advisers, and mouthpiece.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A m s T E r d a m

I'll post pictures as soon as I can. Also, I plan to go to The Amsterdam tomorrow and look around.

So it was all "SB4L" and nothing that actually said "Sunshine Books For Less" right...

Hmph Interesting. Did anyone by chance ask if that artist rang a bell with Frank?

Yes, all references were to SB4L and I asked if Ivan Bilibin was relevant and he said

If you want it to be, I guess. Never heard of him.

Frank,
I looked over the book and found a couple of clues pointing to a bar near Fair Park called The Amsterdam Bar. There is some other odd stuff going on with the book that I have not been able to decipher yet, though. There was a series of "bookmarks" placed throughout the book. I don't know yet if this is a way of indicating a rendezvous time or if it's a red herring to throw off any possible saboteurs or something else entirely. Do you think it's advisable to go scope out this Amsterdam Bar? I'm not quite sure what it would accomplish unless the bar itself is part of the big picture.

If the clues do indeed point to that bar, it would definitely be worth checking out. It's probably a drop point for something The Booksellers are trying to hand off. I have ways of getting in touch with the owner, so let me see what I can find out. Hang tight for a little while.

So it looks like it could turn into a live drop.

It would appear there is something of value there. I arranged for you to pick it up. Just tell the bartender you're Ivanushka and you're expecting a package. And buy a drink if you can. These are good guys.

Ok so I went to The Amsterdam last night in search of a package but it didn't go so well.

I got there at about 9:30 PM, walked into the bar, ordered a drink and told the bartender that he may have a package for me. Told him I was Ivanushka. He looked like he wasn't expecting me. I told him that someone called ahead and talked to someone first. He looked all over but didn't find anything.

I think I came in after a shift change and I asked the bartender what time he got there. He said 8:00. I asked if he could call the bartender from earlier in the day, which he did. Whoever he talked to knew nothing about a package either (or didn't remember).

So I thought maybe there was something I was supposed to look for. I looked at all the art hanging on the wall and some books that were sitting on a shelf. Went outside and looked for posters that might be hanging up. Nothing. There was an art display on one of the tables (it was like a longhorn skull and a piece of driftwood decorated with brass skulls). The bartender said he wasn't sure why it was sitting on the table and thought maybe that's what I was there for. He made another call to the owner and was told it was art they just purchased but had not hung up yet.

Not one to be discouraged, I emailed Frank from my phone and waited. I also called the phone number from the SB4L website (I saved it to my phone just in case). I got a voicemail box at the number but did not leave a message. A few minutes later, Frank emailed me back and said that maybe what I was looking for was an envelope. I asked the bartender again and he made another sweep behind the bar. Nothing.

I ended up leaving empty handed. Hopefully it can just be chalked up to a communication problem (understandable) and I still get credit for showing up. I don't think I was being led on a wild goose-chase but one of the emails I got from Frank was:

Quote:
I wonder if The Booksllers caught wind of it? I'll look into things
and see if we can't figure this out. I'll be in touch.

Anyway, it wasn't a complete loss. I hung out with the bartender for a while while I was waiting on Frank and he's a pretty cool guy. I felt the need to explain why I didn't know who the package was from and why I didn't know what was in it. A brief lesson on ARGs had the guy slightly confused but still smiling.

Oh and as promised, here are some pictures of the book I was sent. I still need to get one of the envelope. Will post it here later.
