[Puzzle]Dial 0 for Operator
Confirmed lead with J

Alright I've got a lead here but I need an audio expert's help to follow up on it. The content of totheark's Impurity video got me thinking about the telephone system. We all know the word Operator has appeared in many locations now and it is blatantly coupled with 0 in the "Impurity" video. Thus the phrase "Dial 0 for Operator" popped into my head and I started getting chills. If you havn't heard that phrase before it's probably because there is very little reliance on telephone operators in our current modern phone system these days but in the old days a telephone call would often involve the operator whom you reached by dialing "0".

The telephone system relies heavily on aural and frequency based signals todo it's job. I would posit that the proper audio analysis of some of the distorted audio in either the entries or totheark videos would yield tones that correspond to a telephone number which we can then leverage for more information.

This evening I was reading through the [trailhead] thread to see if anybody had postulated this theorem and I saw no mention of it HOWEVER I was reminded of something I had previously forgotten. Previous audio analysis has already yielded a short "melody" in not one, but two places!! I don't remember either place and have not heard such a melody with mine own ears but I believe this may be the phone number we are looking for.

I believe there is an iPhone application that can dial phone numbers by listening to these tones, I would strongly urge that someone try an approach such as this.

Finally, to further demonstrate that this is an avenue worth exploring I messaged J about this matter through his YouTube account earlier as well as a couple of tweets and recieved this response through his YouTube account

Thank you. This seems like a good lead.

Looking foward to hearing if this pans out!

I knew I should have bought an iPhone.

Come on, SOMEONE!

The melodies are here.

so upon isolating that tone.. it does sound like 7 separate pulses of tones. However underlining it sounds like there may be some speech as well.

Also... it's the same tone.. I don't think it's a phone number.. :\

But... the numbers may be being spoken.. under the tone..

From the other thread:

Quote:

Here's the full list:
- Impurity: maintains a solid 1049 Hz frequency.
- Entry 3: one of the tones in the cell phone call Alex ignores at 118 seconds contains a 1049 Hz component.
- Entry 2: Alex's car has two sounds, one is just 1006 Hz, the other is three pitches combined: 2223 Hz, 1491 Hz, 748 Hz.
- Entry 11: solid tone at 823 5.4 Hz strongest when Alex is standing next to the Slender Man looking out the window.

Code:

DTMF keypad frequencies
       1209 Hz     1336 Hz     1477 Hz     1633 Hz
697 Hz 1           2           3           A
770 Hz 4           5           6           B
852 Hz 7           8           9           C
941 Hz *           0           #           D

This just might be the way to crack this open. Keys A B C D don't exist on a standard handset but are used by linemen working on the phone lines.

Hmm that's too bad. That "melody" I heard spoke of before really consists of only one tone? I'll see if I can figure anything out but I don't have time to perform a comprehensive audio analysys right now. Looks like I'm wrong about that melody being a number but considering the reply I got from J I think he's hoping that this avenue of discussion will yield some fruit even if my original assumptions are invalid. Keep up the good work and ideas!

Had another thought...

Perhaps there is a telephone number encoded in the audio using pulse dialing such as what was employed by old rotary style phones, in which case the number would be encoded in audio pulses in a unary manner with a short pause between digits. I just thought of it now and I'm heading off to bed so I don't have time to look at the audio with an audio analyzer. I tried listening to the clips but I wasn't able to discern any such patterns with my ear (I have a severe hearing loss) so I'm just shooting in the dark here, maybe it'll spark an idea or an analysis for someone to try.

There's definitely a melody in the Regards audio, which does have different notes, but it's taking a while for two reasons: one is the distortion and noise drown out the actual tones, which makes them hard to isolate, and the other is that we had to compress the audio just to hear them, so in theory we could have any tones just by deciding how much to crush the wave by. That said, I think it's probably unlikely that Regards is a DTMF signal, because the tones are all of different lengths, and I'm not noticing two frequencies in each.

On the significance of totheark's age

totheark lists his age as 79, which is also the ascii symbol for the capital letter O. Does that seem like a coincidence? Sadly I still don't know what to make of it.

totheark seems obsessed with O's and zeros, so that makes sense. I doubt it's a coincidence. It's also possible that it's only one of several ascii/letter translations in totheark's messages.

Anyone know who else drew a lot of O's from the MH video entries?

So... I've gotten sucked in and have been fooling around trying to get the DTMF tones to sound like the little song I'm hearing in the regards video. It's been hard going, cause I'm unsure if I'm even listening to the things at the right frequency. I tried 4848275332, and that's a non-working number, so...

The reason I'm thinking this is cause when I was a kid, I used to play little songs on the phone by pressing the numbers, and this one sounds a but like something I could make cause all the notes are close to each other. You guys are way ahead of me; but maybe it'll be hard to do it empirically through analyzing the tone, since it's compressed and distorted. I tried to just sort of wing it and match the song by ear, but I had a hard time of it. I don't really know what the thing I'm hearing in my audio is if it's not some sort of song, and the audio that was linked to doesn't quite sound like mine, either. Maybe I did something wrong, but I can't help but think there's some significance in what I found, considering I pretty much just reversed it and sped it up a bit.
Regards song maybe.wav
Description  Maybe it's just a weird thing that came about because of the way I tried to mess with the file, but that really does sound like a song to me.

Try playing around with the graphic equalizer; Full Bass, Full Treble, Large Hall, and Techno give the best results on a VLC player. If someone could tell me how to save over the damn file, I'd upload it myslef :/

Has there been any progress with this? I think this is one of our best leads regarding the operator. I'm trying with audacity, no luck though.

EDIT: Madman, you are right. Excellent job! Very Happy Sounds like a classical piece. I'll look into it.

EDIT2: I've been looking all over the place for it. I can't find anything. I'll keep looking, but here's what I BELIEVE so far:

It's either a symphony or a march, most likely strings mostly and percussion. Possible scales are: GB/F# Major, C#/Db Major, D#/Eb Minor. (I'd lean more towards minor, since totheark doesn't exactly seem like someone who's happy.)

That's all I can offer for now. But really, I could SWEAR that I've heard this somewhere before.

EDIT3: Okay, I'm giving up. I have a friend whose father is a musician (a pretty good one at that). I sent him the audio clip and asked if he or his dad can identify it. Hoping for a reply soon.
