Letter 11/66 Transcript

Quote:

Thanks Ella,
for the graphics! I immediately hung them on the wall, the staff here
didn't agree at all, but I prevailed.
I've made a long walk with Sally and Junior on the lake.
Unfortunately, the boy is very stubborn, he talks as good as nothing. I'm
a little worried about him. We can't figure out, what he thinks about the affair (cause) with Fliss. Probably he is mortally embarrassed. Primarily
towards his school friends. The other parents talk about me, of course, and
their children tell on in school ... poor boy.
Nevertheless, I know I've done the right thing, going public with my story. Maybe he is just going through a difficult phase and he will be happy again soon.
I'm looking forward to see you soon here. Then I will show you the lake.
Have a good trip.

C.

Dear Ella,
I thank you for your lines, I had to cry a lot because of all those memories.
I also have to report something that concerns me a lot.
After Sally was gone, I took a walk on the shore of the lake. It is always so peaceful there as if there was no quieter place in this world. And the sunsets are incredible, at one point of the lake are no mountains, you see the sun "falling" into the water. On my walk I met an elder man. We talked and he told me of a terrible tragedy that occurred here in 1435. As a result of a landslide at the time all parts of the city were lost in the lake. Many people died! So much about my assumption this is a peaceful place.
Now since then, the legend holds, the people, who drowned
continued to live under water and had therefore become immortal. Isn't it
wonderful, making such a beautiful story out of such a major disaster? How they, after all, get something positive out of?
This is not about what happens to us, the man said to me, it's only a matter of how we view things. He said this very calmly and casually, as if it was
the most natural thing in the world to think so.
I just wish I could at least from time to time think the way he does.
But I can not.
I need to come to an end now, time for my medicine ..

Love from your C.

Dear Ella,
I had a terrible dream that I can't let go of .
I tremble , hopefully you can read my writting at all
... So real, so real I can't forget the pictures even now!
I dreamed to look out of this room's window. Below me in the fog laid the Lake and I heard a child screaming. I went out fast, wearing only a
nightgown, to see what it was all about.
Then I was at the lake, a tree jutted into the water and I clambered
up on him. With every centimeter I came forward, the cry of the child became louder, but I couldn't see it anywhere!
Suddenly the tree trunk turned around, I fell into the water and fell down!
And on the bottom of the lake, I saw the child who screamed so terrible.
It opened his eyes and looked right into my face and I knew it:
It's Felicity!
What does this dream mean? Does it mean that my daughter is dead?
Do you know what I was also thinking about?
Two pictures of Max Klinger. Please be so kind and
send me the graphics "In the gutter" ("In die Gosse") and "Downfall" ("Der Untergang")
They are in the exhibition catalog in my study, just tear the pages out.
I do not know exactly why, but I have the strong desire to see these pictures - I want them here with me.
Please, do me this favor!
I would be very happy to see you!
When can I expect you?
C.

PS: Thanks for the photo, unfortunately I had no time to deal with it that much.

Dear Ella,
now I had my first group therapy meeting and as I thought, it's really not for me. I don't want to talk to these people about me and my life. But I will attend the meetings and simply listen. They should not think I refused treatment ...
By the way there are only women in treatment. We all get drugs. Although we are sharing small living units - I think I mentioned the holding area - everyone lives her own life. Each has her own room with private bath, of course we're crossing path in the holding area.
On my floor lives, for example, a television actress. I do not know her name, but you certainly know her from TV. She was in all the newspapers not long ago, because just before her wedding it was leaked that she has previously played in a few porn movies. Every afternoon she comes perfectly made up out of her room as if she was expecting journalists - of course there aren't any. Then she sits down and reads Thomas Mann! Although I'm sure she only pretends to. Basically, she just skims through the books. I wonder who she want to impress. (Herself?)
In addition, there is also the wife of a Munich publisher, you know her for sure. Her husband visits her only once a month with their three children. One can see that they all have no desire to visit. But at least she's making herself pretty for those visits. Otherwise she is just running around in her nightgown and with unwashed hair, she looks awful. During the day I rarely see her, but at night she creeps around in the living room, drinking tea and watching romantic movies on video. She cries during the whole film, it's scary. Another woman appears to be quite nice, I've talked to her the first time earlier. Her husband visits her almost every day. One knows neither her nor her husband from the magazine, although they are certainly very wealthy. Otherwise they would hardly be in this clinic. They are very quiet, lovely people, they are called Hofer, from somewhere near Singen at Lake Constance. She has recently lost her child and is now recovering here. But I did not talk with her about her child - or my child -. We only have a little chat about the weather.
Maybe we talk more the next time, maybe not.
I look forward to the weekend, hopefully Sally will bring your letters along.
Lots of Love C.

#4/66 (all even numbers are letters from Ella)
Quote:

Dearest Friend,

Today I write because I had to remember that this is a special and difficult day for you: the second birthday of your daughter ...
Last year we were still together and celebrated with the small Fliss. It was a beautiful day, a nice little celebration. But I knew even back then that something was wrong with Fliss - and what a shame I was right .
I'm just visiting Fliss, because I dropped off a gift. A small stuffed animal to love. She's fine, but she needs to go to hospital for some tests next week. Sally asked me to tea, she always makes such excellent tea, I never get it right.
Your home is such a magnificent property! If you're back, let us take pictures there. The light in the garden is glorious. I'm really envious of you about this house, even if I like living in Schöneberg. In Schöneberg it is colorful and full of life, but sometimes a little too colorful, too full. Then I long for the green, the rest, better air from Dahlem. Who knows if one day I'm rich and famous, I'll buy me a house very close to you! (Oh let me dream ...)
That's it for the moment! Now I have to go home, I gave this letter to Sally, so you can get it on Saturday.
Sending you a hug

Yours Ella

Dear Ella,

We haven't heard from each other for a long time, which is my fault.
I ask for forgiveness for all that has happened.
Some time ago I have decided to put some daylight between me and all events.
I urgently need to blow away the cobwebs!
And above all, no one who constantly tells me that everything is wrong, what I'm thinking and feeling.
You know who I'm talking about ..
Of course, I must first settle a bit, but overall I like it here.
The landscape, the clear mountain air. However, making friends
is a little difficult. Of course, that's just my fault,
you know how I am. Many contacts, a full address book - but barely
sincere friendships.
That's exactly why I miss you.
Back when we first met in the hospital, I wished
to have a friend like you. Such a clever woman, full of energy,
knowing what she wants from life.
I also know that I have done pretty much everything wrong,
but I hope that you can overlook my stupid behavior and give our
friendship a new lease on life. I promise you I'll use the time I spend here to think about myself. Please answer, and let
me know how you feel about everything.
If you want to answer me, just hand the letter over to Sally, they control the incoming and outgoing mail very strictly.
Best wishes, Your Friend
C.

I was curious about the two Max Klinger graphic arts pieces C. asked Ella to send and found this photo of "Untergang." http://www.hamburger-kunsthalle.de/archiv/seiten/en_klinger_2006.htm Have to think the couple of allusions to falling in the water (the sun and the landslide) are significant.

Someone on the german forums already found both of them, they can both be found in the english wiki.

http://66letters.wikidot.com/snail-mail#toc4
then click "Clues found in this letter" to see links to both pics.

You know I could just post them here for you, that would be nice of me.

The first picture, "In Die Gosse" by Max Klinger is here: http://images.zeno.org/Kunstwerke/I/big/78k126a.jpg
The second picture,"Untergang" is here: http://images.zeno.org/Kunstwerke/I/big/78k128a.jpg

AzureWolf, thank you for posting "In Die Gosse" as I haven't finished reading all of the threads at Patmo.de yet.

update on 66letters.net!

clicking on the pen reveals a lil input field [ _ _ | _ _ _ ] .
it seems odd to me, that there is a 2/3 combination. so maybe a combination
of letters and numbers?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
blablabla, forget what I said haha
KV 310 (Köchelverzeichnis 310) (Köchel catalouge) leads us to http://66letters.net/briefupload/ and http://66letters.net/ch1/ . there one can upload the letter he received from ella or c. or leave a comment, so we hopefully get a nice overview

letter #2/66

Quote:

My dear friend,

Let me tell you first how happy I was about your letter! And also about your decision to rest and perhaps to find answers. Yes, you're right, it really took a disagreeable course regarding us and our friendship. I expected a phone call from you much earlier after we met in the hospital. When he came, I immediately knew that you were just calling because you need me for something. And then you offered me money ... I felt like a servant. But you were a likeable person, and I hoped one day we could be friends. If you hadn't talked about money all the time ... I am glad that you got back to me now. And it would be very nice if you could see me as a friend. A genuine, sincere friend who is there for you with no strings attached.
Write me as soon as possible, how you're feeling there. Are they nice to you? What do you do all day? You're bored already?
I wish you all the best now and am glad to hear from you again soon.
All the best
Ella

I'm curious: has anyone identified the music at the 66letters website (as opposed to the music on the tape)? I was browsing the German forums, but I didn't see anything specific to that.
