The original Cloverfield thread was in this forum for about 70 pages on rumor alone.

Heck I remember one thread that was about 70 pages just talking about pastries...

As for the Draw of Cloverfield, for me I first learned of ARGs because of it. I was trying to learn about the movie on my own and found a blog dedicated to the movie "cloverfield Clues" I think it was. In many of the postings they mentioned "the fine folks at unFiction discovered..." Once I saw the film and realized there was no more "cloverfield Clues" to follow I came here. So it is for nostalgia reasons that I hope there is some "there" there because I would have liked to have followed the original knowing what I know now.

Well, as for me, Cloverfield ARG/E was my first Alternate Reality thing I have experienced as such (actually, from my present perspective I have to admit, I have experienced ARGs before, even on the end of 90ies, but I haven't known it were called ARG).

Short, Cloverfield was for me the entrance to this awesome entertainment dimension. They won me already on communication with characters, where your goal were to avoid any meta and to act like a normal participant of their reality. So this was pretty cool challenge, but after all the fake companies were popping out, I said to myself, that ARGs is my life.

I agree woth people, who weren't happy about this ARGs abrupt end/implosion/? But the months of contacting characters, searching for hints and, hehe, translating Kishin from Japanese, make me kinda JJ Abrams devotee.

Even because of
1) his mystery box, and
2) our imagination (which surely were the major tool in this campaign).

I know, this is not everybodies beer, (like people say in Germany), but If it were a small glimpse of JJ Abrams, I'd be there. Even at actions, which completely failed (like DWY).

I gotta say, I made a post in the Archived Cloverfield thread about the Super 8 story purely because of the speculated Cloverfield connection (I guess the nature of the trailer's release too) - the idea being to alert people to a potentially inbound ARG.

I never thought much of the ARG for Cloverfield personally, but as has been pointed out it does have it's fans.

My point is I'm a little surprised to see so much speculation already.

Rogi, love you too. Bet you're a joy at parties.
(If you don't have something nice to say, why hop on the thread and say anything at all?)

You know, you're making my point for me.
How much of that traffic had any meaningful content? It's okay to digress once in a while; But page after page of nothing gets annoying fast. I'm even okay with a ton of hyper-speculation. But that's not what the vast majority of posts were in the last go-round.

I'm worried that:
*There will be a flood of gibberish topics pushing games that people actually put effort into down the list and into obscurity before their time.

*New people coming to unfiction won't see it for what it can be and assume it's just another internet asshattery site.

*People like me who don't see how 99% this content relates at all to ARGs will not speak up and allow a dismissive, vocal minority to push them away.

@RasGold

That's just a fan making up entries with random "viral" elements. Look at his other posts.

But yes, we should really all just keep schtum till someone sees the teaser.

Well, considering Iron Man 2 opens tonight, probably not very far, unless we actually see something like a clue or a web-address in the trailer. XD

I don't remember where I heard it, but one commonly used paradigm of storytelling is to "Start late and end early". Of course, this can be overly abused, but when done right, audiences tend to appreciate it.

Oh and though I'm all for this being for the next Cloverfield, IMDB shows that there are a total of 11 movies in production for JJ Abrams. And that's not including the sequels to Cloverfield, Mission Impossible, and Star Trek.

While we wait, I might as well ask... What *is* it about Cloverfield exactly?

Why is that product and the rather limited campaign it ran (let's face it: the Cloverfield campaign, at least from a design and implementation standpoint, pales in comparison to TDK, Tron and several others) so captivating and makes everyone lose bowel control over it?

If you look at the design of it, there wasn't much to it, and more story was left up to the imagination than was revealed. What makes it such an 800lb gorilla in this industry?

Personally I tend to enjoy things more when aspects are left to my own imagination. It seems that lately the trend is to explain things so thoroughly that NOTHING is left to the imagination. Just look at what Rob Zombie, Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes have done to our horror icons. Or what George Lucas did to Boba Fett. Taken the mystery out of the character with an end result being pretty damn boring when compared to what we had allowed our own imaginations to drum up.

With Cloverfield, I loved the original teaser trailer. The original teaser poster was one of the best theatrical posters I've seen in many years. I love the monster design and the fact that in the end, the film did leave so much up to your own imagination. I didn't participate in or even know what the hell an ARG was at the time it came out, but I know that I enjoyed the hell out of the build up, the online videos, pictures, etc. which led up to the release. And if the execution of a possible Cloverfield 2 comes close to the level of anticipation I felt for the original film, I welcome it with open arms!

I'm definitely taking a close look at this one. I was too late for the Cloverfield ARG and I don't want to miss the ARG for the sequel one bit.
