Yet Abrams went to some length (at least in the backstory) to design CLOVERFIELD *not* to be about an "evil monster" — but that it's actually just a baby, scared, hurt and looking for its mother. I don't think this came through in the film at all, but his intent in designing it as such remains clear. When attacked, it defends itself. But to be evil, Clover would have to have intent behind its actions — it had none, except survival and to find safety. That says a lot about JJ's philosophy regarding "monsters." We'll see whether Abrams follows similar lines with SUPER 8, if there's even an applicable 'monster' this time.

I'm not sure how young you are or what your movie-watching background is, but the point I was making earlier was that Spielberg, in the 70s-80s, went out of his way NOT to make the government the "bad guy." In fact, they were quite benign, peaceful and seeking enlightenment in CE3K — the met the aliens not with guns but with a synthesizer. That's the opposite of "bad guy" behavior.

Note how Spielberg removed the military from the equation entirely for E.T., and while the government was more aggressive in tracking the alien and preserving it as a secret, they were not hunting it down with guns either.

I don't think Spielberg relied on the easy 'crutch' of painting the government/military with a broad brush as the villain in any of his films. Even in WAR OF THE WORLDS the military fires all barrels of every weapon known with no effect against the alien invaders — but it was utterly in self-defense after attack. Much more in line with the spirit of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and the WWII view of military power, and not a paranoid shoot-first Cold War image of armed forces. I think that has a lot to do with his father coming from the WWII era.

If Abrams is truly making SUPER 8 as an homage to 70s-80s Spielberg films — which reportedly influences his career very much — then I'm not sure he'll create a story that opposite to Spielberg's sensibilities of that decade. Of course I expect Abrams in serve his own sensibilities too, which will be the wild card in what SUPER 8 is about, but the pair hardly seem like philosophical opposites to me.

Perhaps the truck driver sacrificed himself so "something" could go free.

Look at this way,it wouldn't be to far off in today's cinema to make us think in the trailer..that this is the beginning of the movie. What if it's the END.

Think about it...everything..a crash, fighting, abductions, everything leads up to "IT" being captured and brought to W.P. Base but in that time frame(the movie) it shows to some people that it is not evil and rather good..and someone decides to give their life to free it.

I was thinking the same thing about the truck driver wanting to free it for whatever reason but I don't think that the monster is actually good. If it was then there wouldn't be too much suspense or action in it. Plus it's a monster movie, the monster has to be evil and from the ARG so far it seems like the government is trying to cover it up and if the monster is good then the government wouldn't be so worried about it getting out.
the gov would totally not want it out and about even if it was good just because its good doesnt mean the gov wants us to know of it or plans to use it for good i think its possible its good and humans or gov winds up being the vilkians of this film im not sure i would call this a monster movie just yet but thats me you could be correct tho

The Day The Earth Stopped Still??

Just so long as they dont remake the old themes and come up with something clever and worthwhile, it will be great!

CE3K/Speilberg influences [SPEC]

Expect a lot of crossovers from Spielberg films of that era, since SUPER 8 is JJ's homage to those films. I certainly expect a strong influence by CE3K since thematically it seems a strong fit so far.

Speaking of which, one idea we might keep in mind is Spielberg's view (and America's in general) of the government/military in CE3K: while it was post-Watergate and the government was definitely covering up the alien contact activity, they were also acting quite peacefully, rather altruistically on behalf of humanity and mankind.

Their secret base and contact plan was the opposite of "shoot first, communicate later" like 50s sci-fi per THE DAY THE EARTH STOPPED STILL, etc. In contrast, CE3K was showed a very positive view of the government/military as exploratory and non-aggressive while maintaining national security. This was highly atypical for the post-Watergate era.

Even as late as — I almost hate to bring it up — IJ AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL (Spielberg directly addresses Area 51), the government is still the holder of secrets, if not the burier of them (see RAIDERS). Time and again, Spielberg's view of the government is non-aggressive or at least non-confrontational.

The question is: will Abrams adopt Spielberg's 70s semi-benign view of the government in regard to the secret in SUPER 8 — the gov't/military working together to effect top secret scientific discovery?

If the trailer implies that the government/military found/have this creature and are transporting it for study or containment, this implies they didn't blast it to bits at first sight. If it ends up this is something the gov't/military can't contain or control and it gets loose, it's interesting that (apparently) the truck driver seems so intent (desperate) to stop its transport and perhaps destroy it.

Someone thinks this 'thing' is much too dangerous to be carted off and stored at Wright-Patt for study/archiving. But that scenario may say (imply) a lot about the government's plan for dealing with it.

Of course, new info could get released which shoots all that to hell!

The problem with this is that it happened in 2002 and Super 8 is in the 70s. It's might have helped inspire the film though.

Isn't there a copyright on scariestthingieversaw that's from 2002?

Thats probably just a coincidence...........

Yeah, the copyright for the RemoteView is for 2002. But that's just to allow us to see the archive files of the PDP-11 from 1977.
