While we wait, I might as well ask... What *is* it about Cloverfield exactly?

Why is that product and the rather limited campaign it ran (let's face it: the Cloverfield campaign, at least from a design and implementation standpoint, pales in comparison to TDK, Tron and several others) so captivating and makes everyone lose bowel control over it?

If you look at the design of it, there wasn't much to it, and more story was left up to the imagination than was revealed. What makes it such an 800lb gorilla in this industry?

I think that part of it's popularity is the way that it was revealed. Just BOOM! out of nowhere. and the title was not even revealed.

As for this new movie, if bloody disgusting is to be believed, this could be a more traditional movie, with some handicam moments put in.

Lastlky, to whomever said that they don;t make super8 film anymore. I believe that it is still made. But normal 8mm is still made.

That's my question. What (if any) indication there is an ARG happening here? Or even chaotic fiction?

Cloverfield has a small, but apparently, rabid, fanbase. It earned 1/10 what TDK did, placing 36th in worldwide receipts for 2008. I can't find it anymore, but I remember a poll finding that a large percentage of people who saw it said they weren't sure what convinced them to go see it and that they probably wouldn't watch a sequel.

I've patiently waited for it to just go away from around here. But now I'm just hoping we don't have another round of inanity flooding the forums. If we could setup a personal ignore filter for the forums , Cloverfield related content is the one thing I'd add. I thought the movie was okay when it came out, but I find myself almost hating it now.

Just my tuppence.

That question was asked last time Wink

The answer this time is that there's none at the moment. But with as little as a rumour to go on, it demonstrates there's certainly an enthusiastic fan base. I hope if this is a Cloverfield 2, that this is noticed and appreciated.

Rogi, some people here enjoy discussing it (and dissecting even a hint of a suspicion to the nth degree Wink ), but it's nice seeing that sort of enthusiasm for something and that's enough for me.

For what it's worth, I love Cloverfield because I have /always/ loved giant monster movies. I've had a vinyl Godzilla sitting on my entertainment center for the past 15 or 20 years, still cuddle my Godzilla VHS tapes, thinks THE HOST (Gwoemul) was incredibly good, and etc. I have the $100 limited edition/expensive Cloverfield action figure. Comparatively speaking, TDK was good, certainly, Iron Man 2 holds no interest for me, and neither does Tron. I don't think the Cloverfield ARG/CF was better than any of the other major CFs/ARGs that are happening, but the subject matter has always been the draw, not the play.

I know they say it is confirmed but I would like to see it confirmed by other sites or by my own eyes before I believe it. LOL.

Just pasting some of the info from that article if that is okay.

Quote:
Update: Our sources tell us J.J. Abrams is actually directing this time around, although nothing is confirmed. Earlier today news broke about a top secret trailer for a new J.J. Abrams project entitled Super 8, which would premiere in front of Iron Man 2 this coming weekend. No other details were available at the time. An update at Vulture CONFIRMS that Super 8 is in fact a quasi-prequel to the smash-hit viral monster movie Cloverfield!! "Our sources...say that Super 8 is absolutely connected to 2008's Cloverfield (possibly a prequel, but not a sequel)." They continue with the plot details, which sound awesome. "Insiders familiar with the trailer tell us that it shows a bunch of kids who are shooting a movie with a Super 8 camera in the seventies or eighties. When they develop the film, they notice that there's an alien creature in the frame." OMFG. To put the icing on the cake, this sounds exactly like the Abrams/Steven Spielberg collaboration announced back on April 28th. Did I say OMFG?! Have your say below.

Nighthawk, just watch JJ Abrams' TED Talk and you'll understand the kind of thinking borne of fascination that leads to triggering fascination in others. The viral campaign for Cloverfield is probably one of, if not the best example of him doing just that.

Cloverfield didn't gross more than big name character based summer blockbusters, but it did set the record for a January release (usually where movies are sent to die), made a profit several times over, and set some records for traffic on these very forums.

Rogi, love you too. Bet you're a joy at parties.
(If you don't have something nice to say, why hop on the thread and say anything at all?)

My hope is JJ makes this as intriguing as the viral was for Cloverfield, no matter if it's related to that or not. I'm playing the more 'accepted' and conventional ARG for Tron, and it's fun - but it's not the same kind of fun.

I'm definitely taking a close look at this one. I was too late for the Cloverfield ARG and I don't want to miss the ARG for the sequel one bit.

Personally I tend to enjoy things more when aspects are left to my own imagination. It seems that lately the trend is to explain things so thoroughly that NOTHING is left to the imagination. Just look at what Rob Zombie, Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes have done to our horror icons. Or what George Lucas did to Boba Fett. Taken the mystery out of the character with an end result being pretty damn boring when compared to what we had allowed our own imaginations to drum up.

With Cloverfield, I loved the original teaser trailer. The original teaser poster was one of the best theatrical posters I've seen in many years. I love the monster design and the fact that in the end, the film did leave so much up to your own imagination. I didn't participate in or even know what the hell an ARG was at the time it came out, but I know that I enjoyed the hell out of the build up, the online videos, pictures, etc. which led up to the release. And if the execution of a possible Cloverfield 2 comes close to the level of anticipation I felt for the original film, I welcome it with open arms!

I don't remember where I heard it, but one commonly used paradigm of storytelling is to "Start late and end early". Of course, this can be overly abused, but when done right, audiences tend to appreciate it.

Oh and though I'm all for this being for the next Cloverfield, IMDB shows that there are a total of 11 movies in production for JJ Abrams. And that's not including the sequels to Cloverfield, Mission Impossible, and Star Trek.
