If this should be in another thread so be it. If this was already mentioned i apologize and did attempt a search.

We all know how reliable wiki's are however i never saw an official release date for the film and found it to be released 5/11/2011.....

And secondly , another member mentioned this on may 10th however not in detail.

***Spielberg's first film was Amblin(shot in 35mm) ...and Super 8 is a "homage" to this film***

If this is true then I believe it will take aspects from the Amblin such as how it was shot and only two main characters but not much else.

Well it's been reported in a few places that SUPER 8 is an homage to Spielberg films of the '70s/80s in general. If so, AMBLIN' was made before that period, which is not to say its off limits by any means. Then again, it's only 26 minutes long so the references will have to come fast. Smile

The most "telling" thing I've heard thus far in relation to Amblin (the production company, not the film) is that reportedly Spielberg is producing SUPER 8 from within Amblin Entertainment (along with Abrams' Bad Robot), thus keeping it separate from DreamWorks interests.

I think Super 8 will be a homage to Spielberg's 70s films, but JJ has done small homages to his own works before (Slusho in Fringe), I wouldnt be Super 8 has some Cloverfield related scenes. Maybesurprised if the creature will eat a large truck marked "Sea bed Nectar" and go bat****insane

Quick question...

Just a quick question, sorry if it's already been discussed, but has anybody looked into what it shows right when the train and car crash and you hear the "oh my god"? It looks like something may flicker by...

I couldn't catch anything of interest going frame by frame during that crash.

Don't know if this is the right place to put it, didn't want to open a new thread for this odd idea.
You see, what if we "read it" the wrong way? What if Super 8 actually stands for superate. I know, kind of ridiculous, but that word has a meaning in Latin.
It's the plural imperative of the word "superare" which means (there are different opinions here) "to overcome", or to "conquer", "surpass", and some other speculations. Plural Imperative means the wordly translation would be "Overcome!" addressed to more than one person. I'm german so my english is not perfect. Would "You shall overcome" also be a correct translation?
I know, it's a wild theory. But might be another nice discussion Smile .

google

Edit: I know that the latin word would be pronounced/spoken in a totally different way but, stil, might be a pun.

I suppose a "toxic gas spill" would keep people in their homes and away from the crash site. This would be a great excuse for a UFO cover-up.
Just like in Close Encounters of the Third Kind..when The Army evacuates the town, reporting to the media that a train wreck has spilled a toxic nerve gas, meanwhile secretly preparing for a UFO landing.. Wink

The problem with this is that it happened in 2002 and Super 8 is in the 70s. It's might have helped inspire the film though.

Yeah, the copyright for the RemoteView is for 2002. But that's just to allow us to see the archive files of the PDP-11 from 1977.

CE3K/Speilberg influences [SPEC]

Expect a lot of crossovers from Spielberg films of that era, since SUPER 8 is JJ's homage to those films. I certainly expect a strong influence by CE3K since thematically it seems a strong fit so far.

Speaking of which, one idea we might keep in mind is Spielberg's view (and America's in general) of the government/military in CE3K: while it was post-Watergate and the government was definitely covering up the alien contact activity, they were also acting quite peacefully, rather altruistically on behalf of humanity and mankind.

Their secret base and contact plan was the opposite of "shoot first, communicate later" like 50s sci-fi per THE DAY THE EARTH STOPPED STILL, etc. In contrast, CE3K was showed a very positive view of the government/military as exploratory and non-aggressive while maintaining national security. This was highly atypical for the post-Watergate era.

Even as late as — I almost hate to bring it up — IJ AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL (Spielberg directly addresses Area 51), the government is still the holder of secrets, if not the burier of them (see RAIDERS). Time and again, Spielberg's view of the government is non-aggressive or at least non-confrontational.

The question is: will Abrams adopt Spielberg's 70s semi-benign view of the government in regard to the secret in SUPER 8 — the gov't/military working together to effect top secret scientific discovery?

If the trailer implies that the government/military found/have this creature and are transporting it for study or containment, this implies they didn't blast it to bits at first sight. If it ends up this is something the gov't/military can't contain or control and it gets loose, it's interesting that (apparently) the truck driver seems so intent (desperate) to stop its transport and perhaps destroy it.

Someone thinks this 'thing' is much too dangerous to be carted off and stored at Wright-Patt for study/archiving. But that scenario may say (imply) a lot about the government's plan for dealing with it.

Of course, new info could get released which shoots all that to hell!

The Day The Earth Stopped Still??

Just so long as they dont remake the old themes and come up with something clever and worthwhile, it will be great!
