I really dont think they went so far as to make sure the STARS were correct for the date and location.... You all can check but, don't rely on that too much. Laughing

In order to keep from going nuts, and since I can't contribute in any other way, have some information about the train and car:

The wheel on the car is probably a locking mechanism. Something like that is so rare on a boxcar that it would have HAD to have been made specially for the military. There's no way there's anything on the inside corresponding to it, since that would bock the door from opening. (Boxcar doors slide along a track parallel to the side of the car, so anything on the inside of the door would block it.) This car was obviously specially designed to keep something in.

Class one railroad speed limit is 79 mph, and that's concrete - it's based on track condition and ability of rolling stock. It was probably going slower that that, if there were any curves or rough spots in the track. The speed limit in Ohio is less than 79, because of congestion, but how much lower at that time, I don't know. Also, as a special military train, it could probably get permission to go 79 if the track conditions supported it.

At 79 mph, a train colliding with a truck like that would not crash that spectacularly. The telescoping of the cars looks right, but the mass of the truck wouldn't be enough to make them do that, because the mass of the truck (what, at the very most, fully loaded with stuff, maybe 8k lbs?) just wouldn't be enough to cause it to stop abruptly enough to cause that kind of telescoping. The train would derail, and obviously friction would slow it down pretty quickly, but not enough to cause that kind of destruction. For that, you'd need something closer to the mass of another locomotive.

So, either there's more to the crash than we can see, or it was that bad for the sake of theatrics.

No, none of that is exactly startling, but more information can never hurt, right? ^^

PM's expect this. I didn't play cloverfield, but my understanding is J.J. paid extraordinary attention to detail.

Cloverfield was huge. It had multiple sights all connecting to each other. It was crazy

Cloverfield wasn't that huge, it wasn't even an ARG, it was just viral.

Can everyone stop saying J.J. did this and that? I really doubt he's responsible for what model computer is in the wreckage.

On the note of the scale of the train crash, it's a tough call between "there's more to it" and "it's a movie". That's the sort of thing that will make a lot of people search for hours for "clues" and other people wait a while and say "see... it just looked really cool".

Yeah, I'm actually going for "theatrics". There's just doesn't seem to be any good reason that there's be more to it. But, I figured I should point it out anyway. ^^;;

Of course they expect us to go through this frame by frame. How else do you think they expected us to find scariestthingieversaw.com?

Yes but, out of all that we discovered, how much did we get from the trailer besides Slusho?

The Slusho website itself was a HUGE step forward in that ARG, as it branched off to pretty much EVERYTHING else that was involved.

Regarding the crash, maybe the truck had some explosives in it? The guy obviously knew he was going to die, so why not go out with a massive bang?

You misunderstand my point: all the information we got from Cloverfield came from either the Slusho site or from the photos on 1-18-08. We didn't learn anything from the trailer, going through it frame by frame, other than the Slusho site itself.

As for the suicide: people that want "death by train" don't usually drive down the track towards it. Standing at the crossing gate is enough for most.

The best part of Cloverfield was the insane speculation.

What I want to see is more pictures with stuff circled. Every frame has a face in it so far. I love it!

Well perhaps he was sent on a kamakazi mission? If your objective is to destroy something, even if you die in the process, wouldn't you want to make sure you get the job done? Loading the truck up with explosives would definitely cause some damage to the train.

So any guesses as to what is in the left side of the screen in this capture?

I swear I see a flask. Or some kind of canister.

Re: Numbers

fuck, i had posted a big post about relating the number/japanese kanji beam viewings, but when i posted, it all got erased and gave me a error. argh. anyways, i used the toyo kanji since it was used up until 1981 and related a few of the characters to mean "soldier, perfect, opening, fruit," and a few others, sorry, too tired to do it all over again and post. perhaps someone can be more vigilant? or perhaps its all nothing. or just numbers
