Here's my wild ass theory: we haven't seen all the trailers yet.

Prior to the trailer getting seen, there was rumors about actors filming something thinking that it was a "romantic comedy" sort of thing. I think that's still a possibility.

TRAILER 1: What we've seen. Something big and nasty has "arrived".

TRAILER 2 AND ON: Home movies, recorded with the traditional Super 8 camera, of people doing home movie stuff, and they happen to get glimpses or film something. Think of the Patterson-Gimlin film (which was filmed on 16mm film), but with aliens instead of Bigfoot.
I like that idea (trailer #2) very much, Nighthawk - think of S-8 videoclips along these lines: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtKuBKIaVvs ....d*mn thing still makes me 'start' when it happens...! Shocked

Ok, how about this:

The leaked trailer that was filmed on a camcorder in a cinema was a clue! Its about someone going to the movies in the 70s to see a Spielberg film, and.... dunno after that :/

Man, how could i forget that old galoot Cthulu, after all weve been thru together. Just the other day, myself, Cthulu and Slenderman went out for cappucinos at Starbucks. The funniest thing happened. The girl behind the counter forgot to put extra whip cream on Cthulu's cappucino so he sent her to a dead space dimension. Thats one guy you dont wanna piss off. Temper , temper. And yea, we so need to party sometime.

Based on Spielberg's past, maybe it is about kids shooting a short film about aliens and then actually finding them. There would be a huge underlying plot like in ET where the government is involved.. And Since J.J. Idolizes Spielberg, I wouldnt be surprised to see a throwback to either ET or Close encounters (which is already referenced in the first shot of the trailer). Don't be surprised if gets get involved.

Guys, it's a heartwarming tale about a bunch of kids in the 70's taking their camera to the circus! There's gonna be 500 huge lions, Ethan Haas is the lion tamer, and Cthulu makes a cameo as the bearded lady! They travel city to city by train, of course...

But anyway, I've heard that nothing from the teaser will end up being in the film. Can anyone here confirm that?

 Is it just me...

or does this sound a lot like the original "plot leak" of Cloverfield where some guy said there were kids filming at Coney Island and an alien starts attacking or something? That was supposedly from someone that witnessed the filming of the movie. Anyone?...

Not a monster

If we're just straight up guessing here, I have to wonder if it's even a monster here we're dealing with.

My initial thoughts, for some reason, on seeing the trailer were more along the lines of the Green Lantern.

Whatever's in the train car is certainly strong, but that in no way suggests that it's a negative force or some kind of monster.

Other than a Night plot
Scary transitions
A face
A train blowing up
and something breaking out
OF COURSE THIS MOVIE ISNT ABOUT A MONSTER...

I'm guessing an experimental human/ET hybrid experiment was taking place in some form or another of DNA splicing. The project got out of hand, there was an escape (pickup driver). During that time they decided to move the project in case it became public this would absolve the government and make them look like the good guys. The escapee found out about the movement of the "cargo" and is trying to get his "friend". Which will turn out to be some crazy beast of a creature (think resident evil's Nemesis).

More or less I guess the same way: Maybe some alien dna spliced with a human to form a kind of biological weapon, a super soldier. Inhuman strength, immune to ABC weaponry, etc. Maybe there are 8 of them Smile. Heck, we don't even know if "super 8" is just a working or terminal title for that movie, do we?
The pick-up driver might be a relative or friend to the messed up human being inside the train and he wants to help him out of the misery of bio-engineering/experiments.
Just a guess. Would be a rip off, though. On the other hand, Abrams didn't really come up with anything original yet, did he? I don't mean to bash him. His movies were interesting and pretty good. But they always ripped off ideas and showed them from a different perspective/in a different way, as far as I can tell.

I have to agree with Happy. We don't have enough info at this time to know what it is. Yes it's safe to assume that it's a monster, and yes it's safe to assume that it's evil... but how do we know for sure?

For all we know, at this time, it could very well be that the creature locked in there was trapped against it's will and all it wants is to go home. It caused the accedent to find a way to get free and leave this planet, because humanity had been torturing it and experimenting on it sense it's arrival.

Guess your right, it's about a monster. Man.

Wikipedia states that a Super 8 film cartridge could shoot for 2.5 minutes at 24 frames per second. It does not seem a stretch to say that we will likely see multiple 2.5 minute video clips as viewed by a 3rd party (ie not the person who shot the video(???the kid we see in the reflection???) and not the person who owns the footage (the government).

On a basic level we must determine what kind of scary movie this is going to be. Two basic kinds of scary movies are the "runner" and the "investigator". A "runner" film would be a movie like Cloverfield. An "investigator" movie could be the X-files movie or The Ring (although it crosses over to a "runner" at times).

I personally don't see Super 8 as a "runner" film principally because it does not make sense given Spielberg's movie past. From a purely speculative stance I see this film as involving a man's investigation and possibly his attempt to expose his findings.

Of course, I could be totally wrong Razz

Despite plot we could also simply guess on the age-rating for this movie.
What do you guys think this is going to be?

I'm just asking myself as Abrams usually goes on "heavier" stuff than Spielberg would do.

For the U.S. I think it's definitely going to be PG-13 but we have different rating systems all around the world.
I, for example, live in Germany. Here we have the "steps" age 0, 6, 12, 16, 18. And then even a "ban"-list, which has been cause to a lot of discussions. "The Evil Dead" for example has been on the ban-list for many years here. Or the more contemporary uncut version of "Inside" is.

I'd guess for us germans it's going to be 16. At least I hope so. 12 would be kind of a shame. And Spielberg would IMO not support an 18 movie on his production company.

Edit: If you answer from a different/new country, please explain your rating-system in short so we have an overview.
