Ok, how about this:

The leaked trailer that was filmed on a camcorder in a cinema was a clue! Its about someone going to the movies in the 70s to see a Spielberg film, and.... dunno after that :/

I am interested in this and how many people here manage to see it?

since this is the thread to throw out guesses to see how close we are to the finished product...

My theory is that there is some sort of captured alien being on this train It is getting helped being rescued by his comrades out of view of the camera, but actually needs to manually board it(not get beamed up) and people/soldiers get there to quickly and the ship can't land therefore the alien has to run and hide like a fugitive and some kids end up taping it. Perhaps they realize this and go to look for it and help it since they are smart enough to see the train crash is being covered up.I don't believe the aliens are evil however the military is trying to keep them in control/capture based on previous contacts, hence area 51 and this film will be about them trying to capture it and keep things secret still.

that's my shot in the dark at this point.

J.J. would have a field day with this:
... a new era in biology ...

For the first time, scientists have created a synthetic cell, heralding a new era in biology.
Surprised
Anyway ... Whatever the plot may be (and we can't really discern much from the trailer), I sure hope that Abrams has this film take place in the "here and now!" ... For a movie to be scary (for me), it has to take place like it was happening "today."

PLOT GUESS: Military experiments on "supposed" alien life form transfered from Roswell, New Mexico to Area 51; after 25 years, the "thing" has developed into something more ... um ... hideous? and stronger ... Has to be transported (once again) to a "facility" in Ohio ... One man knew "it" was coming, and derails train. ... "It" (or, many "Its") get out and hide in the countryside. FLASHFORWARD------> Super 8 films of the monster(s) are examined to triangulate location sightings of said creature(s). Mad Scientist/Military find "It" and find it has developed intelligence. Once again, humans want to either examine or destroy the "unknown." ... "It" goes on monstrous rampage!!!

I think the film would start out with "LIVE" news footage, then use flashbacks (some factual, some speculative) to tell the complete story. Or, "Super 8" could be eight different views of what really happened.

Just my 2cents.
.

LOL, King...all that's missing from your list is Cthulhu and 500 of...something (rofl). We must party! Rock On

Man, how could i forget that old galoot Cthulu, after all weve been thru together. Just the other day, myself, Cthulu and Slenderman went out for cappucinos at Starbucks. The funniest thing happened. The girl behind the counter forgot to put extra whip cream on Cthulu's cappucino so he sent her to a dead space dimension. Thats one guy you dont wanna piss off. Temper , temper. And yea, we so need to party sometime.

You sound like the guy that might appreciate this: I Cthulhu by Neil Gaiman

But I digress...

Hey man, i appreciate the link. Have always liked Gaiman's work in graphic novels. Was funny and thought provoking at the same time , something i highly respect in writing. thank you very much for that

I don't think the plot will feature this creature running around, causing death and destruction - it just seems to similar to what happens in Cloverfield (powerful monster destroys surroundings).

I think the plot is going to be very, very different in a way we haven't been able to contemplate. The typical ideas - creature escapes, military needs to recapture it, creature terrorises students/kids who happen to be in the vicinity just seem too unoriginal for a JJ Abrams premise.

So if thats not how it goes down, then you think its going to be a friendly alien and the kids are going to protect it? hello!!! Can you say E.T. 2, or Race to Witch Mountain 2, for something more recent. Cmon this is J.J. freaking Abrams were talking about here. While i do agree this will be a film that pays homage to the 70s and early 80s Spielberg films, it will be done in J.J. Abrams style. Does the whole friendly alien route sound like our beloved J.J.'s lovingly twisted mind? Plus, that kind of story isnt going to fly in today's day and age unless its a kid's or tween movie and there is no way in blue hell that J.J. is going to make a movie like that? Just my opinion , but i guaran-damn-tee Im not the only one with that point of view

Saying that I don't think this movie will feature an alien creature running around causing death and destruction is far from equivalent to suggesting that it will be friendly.

Again, I feel that the "random group gets caught up in military matters far removed from their innocent hands and captures unknown creature on film on a rampaging spree" is too similar to Cloverfield to be the central premise of this movie.

The problem is that all signs point to the bit about someone catching the alien on film. It's an accidental thing, and as yet there's not necessarily any indication that there's a total 'rampage' involved. Cloverfield was an incidental thing, where they knew what they were recording, instead of accidental. They didn't set out to record the last hours of their lives fleeing a monster, but as they were doing so they knew that's what they were doing. This also appears to happen in a remote area, not a large city.

I suspect that this is going to have more elements of the E.T. equation, where the 'monster' may not be the biggest enemy - if an enemy at all. It could be that any injury caused by the 'monster/alien' is accidental or unintentional. It's clear the situation is something the government would want to keep quiet.

I'm leaning toward the thing in the boxcar being an alien - that was my impression, though more specifically E.T. related. E.T. as in the movie/character.

What would rule?

If OHMYGOD IT'S A LION! AND IT'S HUGE!

It would serve us all right!

The forum isn't double posting, it's not redirecting properly after most posts. I deleted the double as requested. If you get a blank page after posting, you can just open the page again and your post will be there.
