First communication

I got an email today from Lucinda. Here is the email, below is my response.

Dear [swift360]:

We're truly happy to have you as an integral part of our administration. Your position is vital to our company and brand image throughout society.

Soon you will receive information about team member access to our website. Because your position is very focused on public relations, you will recieve permissions to write new posts on our website. Don't worry--we'll tell you when you'll need to write something well in advance. Your writings won't need to be lengthy, either.

You will also be receiving an e-mail address with Aguatero Industries. Use of this e-mail address is restricted to e-mails within and relating to Aguatero Industries. It will help us keep in touch with you.

As we are preparing to make a public announcement about your hiring, we'd like you to answer the following questions.

How would you like your name to appear in all Aguatero websites and publications?
What do you aspire to do as president of environmental and community affairs?
What is your reaction to being able to work with Aguatero Industries?

We'll be in touch.

Sincerely,
Lucinda Rodriguez

Lucinda Rodriguez:

Thank you for the email. I look forward to working with you.

- I would like my name to appear as swift360. It allows me an identity that is unique and memorable (for marketing), and allows me a little privacy in the wake of what has happened to the last President. I believe this will give me an edge.

- I aspire to bring the company more positive recognition in all aspects of media.

- I am elated to become a part of the company and look forward to the experiences associated. This is an opportunity of a lifetime and I am very eager to get my hands dirty.

Thank you again!
[swift360]

Got my training via email as well. Guess I was just a bit impatient Smile

Anyway, here's what I got with my responses bolded:

Quote:
Greetings.

Chris Chlorson, the president of water quality at Aguatero Industries. Today, I'm here to begin your training and orientation. These will take place over the next few business days and should give you a firm grasp of your position at Aguatero Industries. I'll be guiding you through training for the position of water quality analyst, an important role here at Aguatero.

These training sessions may be considered unconventional by some, but we like to see if you "sink or swim" in a series of hypothetical situations. The training may be completed at your own pace, but evaluations may have deadlines.

Today, we're going to look at the process by which we diagnose water quality.

In any water system, it's possible that minerals or chemicals enter the water supply. Some chemicals are harmless; others can cause considerable health risks. It's up to us to make sure that our water is up to par.

So, let's look at an example:

A scientist takes a water sample, and the sample is clear but smells like bleach. What conclusions can be formed?

Conclusion: The sample likely contains an elevated amount of chlorine. Further testing is necessary to see if the chemical is at an appropriate level in the water.

Now, it's up to you to diagnose the following situations. Be careful not to make too hasty of conclusions--they must be supported by scientific knowledge. Advise if further testing may be necessary. To complete these situations, copy them below and paste them into an e-mail. Put in your conclusions and send them to me with the subject Water Quality Diagnosis. In a few days, we'll review the answers and see who excelled at the task.

Situation #1

A sample is collected. Its color is red-orange and tastes metallic. What conclusions can be formed?

Conclusion: The red-orange color is indicative of the presence of the ferric ion, among other things. The metallic taste confirms that the contaminant is likely iron (III), causing rust to form in the water. Cation-exchange chromatography can help to determine if iron is really the contaminant.

Situation #2

An area has an unusually high rate of mentally handicapped children. Nervous system disorders are also higher than average. What conclusions can be formed?

Conclusion: From a water quality standpoint, these symptoms are indicative of heavy metal poisoning. Various analytical methods may be employed to determine just what may be contaminating the water supply, including spectroscopy, chromatography, complexometric titrations and mass spectrometry. However, with such general symptoms, it is difficult to say with certainty what the issue is, or even that the water supply is to blame.

Situation #3

A sample is collected. It is clear colored and tastes sour. Plants watered with water from this source die quickly. What conclusions can be formed?

Conclusion: It is possible that the water sample has a particularly low pH; this can be determined with a simple pH meter. The particular acid contaminating the sample could be determined by titrating the sample with a strong base. If this is not the case, there may be some sort of herbicidal contaminant present.

Situation #4

A groundwater sample is collected near an herbicide manufacturing plant. People throughout the area have an unusually high rate of cancer. What conclusions can be formed?

Conclusion: It is likely that the plant is leaking carcinogens into the water supply. Further analysis would be necessary to determine if this is the case, and what the particular contaminant is. A reverse phase HPLC may be useful in determining the presence and identity of the herbicide.

A bit of wikipedia and remembering stuff from my A-Chem days, and there you have it! Though I probably should have checked with you all before I sent it in... Hope I didn't mess it up! Laughing

Since Hatshoe died, I'll hop onto this boat.

I've applied for a sales position at Aguatero.

I got a fun one. Not quite what I imagined a scientist would be doing; this sounds more like a marketing gig, but maybe this is just the first task.

Quote:
Good afternoon!

Training for beverage research and development scientist begins today. It will be a hands-on process, unlike the training of many other employers. It will take place over the next business days, though it can also be completed at your own pace.

For the position of beverage research and development, not a whole lot of training is necessary. So, what we're going to do involves some thought and a pitch, something you'll do quite a bit of here at Aguatero Industries.

We'd like you to pitch us a product that meets the specifications below. If you really wow us, who knows? Maybe it just might get produced!

To submit your pitch, e-mail me with the subject First Pitch. Give us all you've got--persuade us to want to buy your product. Graphics are fine to use, but are not required by any means. We'll decide on the winner of this task on Tuesday, June 1st, so submit your pitch before then if you want to be the winner (and who doesn't here at Aguatero?)

Specifications

We're looking for a new water beverage that appeals to a college-age audience. It should be hip, tasty, and inexpensive.

Give it your best shot and let your imagination run wild!

-Kyle Mack
Senior Brand Manager, Aguatero Industries

I'll work on it over the weekend; ideas? I'm thinking going with a green theme; I figure they'll like the idea of seeming green while they continue to screw the environment sideways...

Haha, awesome. I actually said it all between the app and "interviews" during the process.

ironnikki - great answers, I may need to remember some of these for later if I have some damage control Wink

MensVenatus - I like the idea of the green theme, maybe something like the new energy type water i remember reading about - keep them up all night and not destroy the environment

I sent to their website a rather audacious letter suggesting they should hire someone for PR, and then suggesting myself for the position. However, no response to that. I got the sales job though, and a password. I'll be exploring things pretty soon.

I received a letter from Lucinda informing me that I was not accepted for the position to which I applied. However, I am to "fit a need that has only recently begun to appear." She mentioned Connor Artur and his H20 Team, and all are seen as enemies to Aguatero. She also mentioned the "insatiable thirst" of Aguatero customers and the "flawless business model." She told me I will be kept up-to-date on confidential matters within the company and insisted I keep quiet as Aguatero has "many supportive individuals in all government agencies." She concluded her letter, "We have already decided you will work with us - your life depends on it . . . Your exact job assignments will be sent to you soon."
She included two additional sheets of paper with the letter - a copy of Connor's password protected page and the Google map of the H20 Team. There were hand written notes by Lucinda on both pages. I don't have a scanner at home or I'd include images. There are several comments to Connor's blog post. Suffice to say, Aguatero has tapped Connor's phone, tracked his computer, and gained access to his site. On the blog post page she also wrote, "we'll stop them before they reach our secrets." On the map page she only wrote, "His followers are everywhere and they're rapidly expanding. They don't know the truth. LR"
I sent Connor a short email informing him of their access to his site. If Agautero asks about it, I'll tell them I'm trying to gain Connor's trust, etc.

Hmmm. Is anyone else trying to figure out why they hired us if we are so thoroughly busted? And why this particular correspondence is the first time that Aguatero has contacted anyone by mail?

Here's my first pitch for a new product, sent it today.

Quote:
The Premise
Psychologically, college-age consumers can be best marketed to when a product targets 'core self-concepts' that they identify with automatically as part of their still-developing self-identity. Market research has identified several common core self-concepts in this demographic:

- Close friend/peer relationships
- identification with school/college endeavours (sports teams etc.) as a precursor to national patriotism
- Focus on healthy food, distrust of genetic modification/chemicals/advances in food preparation
- Environmental awareness

A new product must successfully target some or all of these concepts in order to be accepted as 'cool', which market research has determined is essentially synonymous with an autonomic good feeling stemming from activation of these core self-concepts. Coupled with the obvious financial limitations of this demographic leads us to…

The Pitch

Introducing…

Aguatero RIM SHOTS

- Small, cheap, 1.5 ounce 'shot glass' presentation
- Good tasting, caffeine-enriched energy boosts
- Essentially water, sugar, and concentrated caffeine

The Marketing
- Cheap !!! (< $1?)
- Gives you that needed late-night boost without the coffee headaches, dry-mouth, or constant bathroom breaks
- Fun! Freeze them for ice cubes with a kick!
- Re-cycle the shot glasses for future beverages of your choice
- Collectable! Initial promotional roll-outs should be alongside college basketball and other games, team member promotions on packaging, etc. Introduce different flavours associated with different teams. Tie-in with player promotions
- College drinking games tie-in; tallest stack wins!
- Parallel negative campaign targeting coffee industry: exploitation of poor independent coffee growers, intimation that "fair trade" really isn't fair at all… Compared to the muddy brown evil, what could be better than pure, clean water with a kick?
- Portable, environmental; 10% of the plastic of Red Bull!

The Business
- Excellent profit margin; far better than our traditional bottled water model; and packaging costs can be dramatically reduced after initial rollouts.
- Traditional marketing costs minimal; game-based promotions quickly turn to free word-of-mouth advertising

It also included a mockup of a shot glass with the Aguatero logo and Rim Shots written on it; don't know how to re-create it on the forum. Anyway, if they REALLY hate it, I can say it was a joke (Rimshot; buhdumpBUM...)

D'oh... I was wondering what that water bottle had to do with anything. I received it the day before I went on holiday and haven't thought about it since. Until I saw the post on ARGNet. /face palm/ Bang Head I'll look into this a bit more.
