[SPEC]Who's computer is that? Clue?

Note: I did do a search on this topic and couldn't find any discussion. So I apologize if this was discussed elsewhere. If you could direct me where if any the discussion is, I'd be grateful.

Okay, there I am updating my pics list (by the way, visit my "pics" list, I have it linked in my signature. It's all the pics used by this ARG). Anyway, I happened upon the popup pics for the Metacortechs sites. There's 4 of them. The first one is the one that this thread is about.

Here is the popup: Employee Info

Now, okay I want to get the jpg for my pics list right? All the other popups have a jpg. So I view the source, get the jpg, and look it up. Well, that's not what's on the popup. Instead it looks more like someone's computer screen:

That's clearly someone's computer screen. You've got what looks like it could be the "My Computer" icon in the upper left corner. The Metacortex wallpaper. Then of course the taskbar at the bottom, with the time on the right and is that a windows start button on the left?

So what's the deal with this?

Maybe it's supposed to be the desktop of a MetaCortex employee, or all employees at the office?

well, isnt that the background for the contact Regenhardt, David about your account popup? The problem (well the difference between this and the other popups) is that the proper address is http://www.metacortechs.com/images/bg.jpg not http://www.metacortechs.com/bg.JPG (Linux is case sensitive..)

So either
a) the background is a clue.. and purposely hidden
or
b) the html file author 'oopsed'

I asked about this in the last few days on irc, and someone (can't remember who) said that it used to show up.. So I don't know if the file was moved, or they misunderstood my question..

My two cents..

While it could be a mistaken link to the popup, a jpg pic of someone's computer screen seems a little odd to me. The time on the taskbar looks to be 1:12 AM. I'm not entirely sure if that's a "My Computer" icon in the upper left. It could be. I don't know how to clear pics up, this looks a little blury. Someone else wanna take a crack at it?

Here's a sharpened version. WHen you sharpen the picture up, you can clearly see the writing next to the "My Computer" icon.

Although this may be obvious does it say: "Metacotex: Serving You Into the 21st Century"

If it's the same backgoround as metacortechs offers on there website then you could just take that shrink it and use 'difference' in photoshop to isolate the text. I'd do it myself but can't right now. Only thing that might stop it is quality loss from compression

Yeah, I isolated just the top left corner. I know, I know, it's still wicked blurry, but you get the gist. Not much there. And there wasn't anything else happening anywhere else on the screen.

There is no difference besides the toolbar at the bottom and the icon at the upper left...

My question is, is that in fact a "My computer" icon? Or an icon for some other program? I doubt that anything was changed in the background, but I could be wrong. And I'm also assuming that in the lower left corner it just says "start" with a windows icon next to it. But I could also be wrong there. I don't have a sharpening tool on my crappy onld computer.

[EDIT] Thanks bakntime and Anthrax, that's what I thought. It's just the wallpaper everyone gets. The stuff I'm interested in is the icon and "start" button. Really just the icon. i think the start button is just... the windows start button.

FYI: This was the backround to the original popup that came when you first visited www.metacortechs.com before the game went live, Oct. 1.

Ah, and these popups do not occur anymore now? Because I have never seen one (I only knew of metacortechs.com 1 day after it went live Smile )

Nope, they stopped after Oct. 1. They gradually progressed from that first one to four others. Actually, I don't think we ever found meaning in them, possibly because not many ARGers were involved...the discussions were mainly being done on Matrix boards, and we weren't sure what was going on. I wonder if it would be worthwhile to go and check those early pics for stegging and the like. *wanders off innocently hoping someone will read who knows how to properly use a destegging program* It's probably been done, but now I'm curious...

You all may be talking about the icon and 21st century, but what about the time. It clearly says 1:12 AM.

Just a thought.
