These are not similar themes. These are exact replicas i.e. the same thing. Similarity implies something different in them. What is different?


I think the biggest difference is that these two videos were marked as entries into a video-short contest. Wink

Additionally, the "Slender man" video has red-eyed Evan describing Slenders as if he had no idea who this mysterious man in his dreams was. Since the conceit of EverymanHYBRID is that it began as a fake SM series that turned real, EMH-Evan would doubtless have recognized the tall man with no face.

Beyond that, the "Slender man" short is self-contained. The two characters are introduced in a "wacky" setting, Chekov's Knife gets some prominent screen time, Red-eye Evan has a convo about a man with no face telling him to do horrible things and then is revealed to be a crazy-man talking--and replying!--to an empty chair, Chekov's Knife is unsheathed and introduced to Vin's throat, there's a quick glimpse of a faceless man (just like in Red-eye's dreams! Woo!), tussle tussle tussle, Evan brandishes Knife at camera, cut to Faceless Guy acting spooky, and...fin! It efficiently sets its characters, suggests a premise, and carries it through (stylishly!) in under three minutes.

"Welcome to the ARK" is frustrating, since it seems like it'd be unintelligible to anyone who hadn't been following EMH. I think that's due to it's being a failed effort, though, and not because it's meant to be in-game. They're just trying to set up too much back-story in too little time, relying on sparse but evocative exposition to suggest some sort of apocalypse scenario. The recycled footage doesn't do as much heavy lifting as it should, and overall the thing comes off a lot more student-filmy than "Slender man" or their EMH work. Using the purple tape here was a *huge* mistake, and the shots of Slender Man were probably a poor choice.

Extra frustrating is the fact that "Welcome to the ARK" could conceivable work as part of the (distant) end-game for what we've seen so far. We'd need to pull in Dr. Corenthal along the way, add (or reintroduce) at least two girls to the cast, and set up whatever got them trapped in the basement, but it's not too removed in characterization or visual feel from what we've already seen.

Still, if either of these turns out to be canon, I'll join Unwanted in an underwear feast. Smile


Evan is also talking to a chair about SM. The chair probably doesn't know what Slenderman is, so Evan, being the caring knife-wielding-maniac that he is, explains his situation to the chair without using any complicated jargon, thus preventing any confusion. Also, Evan is talking to a chair...pretty sure he's not going to speak/act normally when doing so. And it's not really that self contained since it fits in exactly with EMH so far.

As for the ARK one, the purple tape, viewing of their previous videos, etc. are what make it fit perfectly with cannon. The reason it seems to fit so well with EMH is because it is part of EMH.

I know these are responses to a contest, but that also makes sense IG. They're trapped (regardless of timeline) and they want people to know, so they respond to a horror contest because they know their audience (both IG and OOG) likes horror to spread the word.

Probably shouldn't be too much of a surprise....the Brooklyn fire was a possibility that elicited a direct response from the EMH crew.

Though considering the mind boggling volume of posts lately I guess I can understand how little details such as these can be easily lost in the quagmire!

 		This is awesome news!

The location of the 2006 fire was Greenpoint Terminal Market, which is apparently now being used as a filming location. I wonder if they're fitting some of their EMH shooting into a school-related project?

EDIT: One of the photos used to advertise the location is a fun coincidence. Smile

 		My 2 cents is that the videos are OOG or at best unpublished future entries we weren't supposed to find yet. But it's been beaten to death so we'll wait and see!

Props to whoever originally found the Brooklyn fire article, looks like there's a good chance you were correct Smile
