[SPEC] USAF involvement speculations on government involvement in Super 8 ARG So it isn't surprising that in a film whose teaser trailer mentions Area 51 that there are several references to Air Force in the content we've seen. In fact, everything we've seen so far all really points to USAF involvement. Here are some of the points and some of my speculation on the matter.
Area 51 is a USAF installment in Nevada and is of course well know to be the supposed location of alien artifacts, technology and even *dare I say* alien beings. The first sentence of the teaser trailer is "In 1979, The U.S. Air Force closed a section of Area 51."
This is the first and most obvious clue to USAF in Super 8. That and the big "USAF" insignia on the freght train door at the end of the teaser.
Hangar 18 - Hangar 18 can be any hangar on an airstrip with more than 17 hangars. There are 2 famous hangars with the name Hangar 18, though. One is in Area 51 itself and the other is at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH. In the teaser, the second sentence is "All material was to be transported to a secure location in Ohio."
D. Morris - On the website scatisetthingieversaw.com, D. Morris is likely a reference to Dan morris. Dan Morris is a retired Master Sergeant in the USAF that once had the most top-level clearance within the government. He testifies that the government knows of the existence of alien life and has gone to great lengths to cover it up.
STALOG - During the pdp-11 boot sequence, STALOG is mentioned three times. STALOG is an acronym for Study of Automation of the Logistic System. It was a study performed in 1979 by the USAF with the goal of finding a cost effective way in which to automate logistics records between facilities.

I think it's a given that the premise is that the USAF is involved, but we have to ask what their intention was with said extraterrestrial being and why it was being moved to Ohio from the much more remote (and thus presumably secure) Area 51. It's not like Area 51 just went away, and even if there were cutbacks some things would just make sense to be in such a remote location.
We also have to wonder if our suicide truck driver was intent on wrecking the train, or just a random suicidal person who chose just the wrong (or for us, right) train to play chicken with?
BTW, when I saw the teaser in the theater someone above me said "that truck wouldn't make that happen". Some people just have no imagination.

Right, well in the teaser is says "a section of Area 51 was closed". I wonder what could have caused a section to be closed.

About a truck, I'm really wondering about intention of the driver.
I suppose, it could be suicidal action, which witnesses the disperation of the driver, who could sacrifice his life for the sake of something.
Or, this person was brain hacked.

It seems clear from the trailer that the truck intended to drive in to the train. Although whether that was to stop it reaching it's destination, to release the monster from captivity or something else, we probably won't know until a proper trailer is released or even until we get to see the movie.

My thoughts on this is, yeah, it was a suicide mission.

It's funny... since this started I've found myself poking around in a lot of .gov websites and found myself thinking "there must be tons of other gamers doing this... I wonder what the government is thinking about all the increased activity?"

@Saevitia
Yes, I think also in this way. I ask myself, what has he/she sacrified for? Heroic story or rather radical? I can't wait for movie.
@Anteros
It's OK as long as nobody bruteforce the sites
Well, sometimes some ARGs used to bring up federals and so. Like Junko Junsui.

I like to think the driver of the pickup somehow intercepted information about the materials transfer and for motives unknown to us decided to stop it from happening. Perhaps the driver hacked government computers to garner the info.
I don't think it was a random suicide mission. He was in an awful hurry to get to that train track. The truck nearly wiped out a few times trying to make it onto the tracks. I got the sense of desperation and emergency from the teaser. Like it was a last resort, a desperate act committed out of necessity.

According to the ledgends and stories I grew up with, Everything "ET Like" was moved to WPAFB when the government felt they could no longer maintain the secracy of Area 51. Back then they were still dening its very exsistence. But as photos of the "Janus Flights" from Vegas to a remote airfield and Photos of the base itself taken from "freedom Ridge" became public they decided to move the Alien stuff to a newly built facility UNDER WPAFB's hanger 18. That way people could come and go from it all day long without raising a single eyebrow.
At least that is the story I grew up with. Take it for what its worth.

One question on the area 51 part. Was part of the Base closed OR part of the Literal area 51. (I'm not sure but isnt area 51 itself just a part of land?)
Cos if its the base that surely means its recovered and then gets lose, or the closed area is just the train wreck.

According to the legend they closed the portion dealing with Aliens. Area 51 remains an open base testing new types of aircraft and wepons systems and who knows what else...
