Black Shirt Learning
Educational Technology arg?

Caught a tweet about an ARG that seems to have just started, though haven't looked in depth to find its scope yet, but someone has created a wiki already to track it...

http://wiki.blackshirtgame.com/wiki/Main_Page

Seems to have begun with a 'hacked' entry on the Black Shirt blog - http://blackshirtlearning.wordpress.com

A coded message? http://blackshirtlearning.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/hacked.jpg

eta: looks like it was solved as per - http://wiki.blackshirtgame.com/wiki/Erica%27s_blog_hack but he hasn't shared the solution. Emailing 'Erica' (http://twitter.com/Ericatech) with the answer provided him with "secret info".

Erica tweeted with the #educomm hashtag, an upcoming technology event - http://educommconference.com .

Thoughts?

Looks interesting, I've never been good with the whole decoding process. But via the tweet you can see who some of the players are; and wiki page edits.

.-. I wonder how this will turn out.

Some of the letters are different in the hacked text.
It's just a game of figuring out which you're looking for.

I have the first two sentences solved (I believe), but I'm having troubles with the third one and I've run out of time to solve puzzles today.

The first two sentences are:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
You and your hacker can stop.

You don't know who you're messing with.

I think the other one is just reverse what you did with the other one.

one campus at time you'll see

So, I guess it's time to email that one person.

[Update]
So, the email came back and I was given a somewhat lengthy email conversation dating back to March 5th.
Looks like we've got info on who the hacker is, still it leads off to another link.

The link seems to be a dead end at this point.

All that it contains is "I will document the conspiracy."

The only other interesting thing from the email conversation is the email of this hacker friend, haxxdragonSPLATgmail.com.

We could email this person, but I'm not sure what about.

Well, we could give him a friendly warning of the threat that was aimed his way.

Alright, I did that.
I'll edit this post if I get a reply.

Oh and also, the emails go back to march 2nd and the most recent is march 5th.
You may have read the conversation backwards (which is what I did the first time..)

Also, if anyone wants to see the email conversations and doesn't want to email Erica, I can upload a txt document somewhere or just send it to anyone interested.

I'm at work, so I can't look into this much further, but I'm pretty sure the name and year are all
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
references to books about the internet or video games in society. The years are a little off from what Google books thinks, but I know several of the names are authors of books written on the subject in (or about) the listed year.

So my guess is that the rest of the numbers are
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
indexes to pages, then letters or words. I.e., Tapscott's 2009 book, page 116, line (or paragraph? or word?) 2, letter 2? Something like that.

Although, I'm all for participating in this ARG, I can't help but be a little impressed with the proposed technology that WSL claims to offer. I mean, I love the idea of RFID chips in student IDs to track attendance; that way I could just send along my ID with a good student and get myself some sleep. Very Happy

And just for my own reference, all of the links I've seen so far. Am I missing any?

...
So you'd like to expend to being you only needed ID? What if everyone used them? All then that would be needed would someone to turn it off, and you'd be nameless and lose everything.

RFID I vote for not.

I wonder if Poyson got a reply yet?

I figured that much for the first part, but I wasn't clear on the last parts.

Oh sorry, I should've updated,
I never got a reply from the guy.

I'm going to try to spend a little time just finding which book is probably related to each line and update this as I go.

* Tapscott 2009 116 2 2 (1 year off, but it was late 2008 so..)
* Gee 2003 1 6 8
* Robbins 2008 2 2 9
* Bolter 2001 102 3 7
* Aarseth 1997 116 1 4
* Rouzie 2005 82 24 7
* Kapp 2010 278 21 5 (A few technology related books, can't decide which)
* Bonk 2009 289 8 7
* Wankel 2009 123 1 5 This or this seem to be the best bet. The former is only edited by him so I'm not sure.
* Perron 2009 274 1 1
* Turkle 1997 20 41 11

Mr Nekomata, you bastard..
Nice going.

Hah, it was good work, you're quick on those searches.
Now that that's done, the real hard part begins.
I'm about to check Tapscott's book.

I looked into that first link, most likely it's later editions: ->
Grown Up Digital: How the Net Generation is Changing Your World by Don Tapscott. McGraw Hill 2009. ISBN: 978-0-07-150863-6

Just trying to be helpful, that's one of the pluses of having multiple people on this.

So what do we think the numbers apply to?

My best guess would be that the last two numbers are line and letter respectively.

At first I thought maybe the second to last was paragraph number, but the clue for Turkle's book is much too large for it to be paragraph.

Anyway, if I'm right, the first letter is "o"

though it could be line and then word,
That would be "I'm"

If you'd like me to check any other possibilities, just let me know.
(I'm using the 2009 edition, so hopefully it's correct)
