The problem we have is that if we find out what it means, then whats next? I dont know why they gave us this audio clip now and why...there must have been a reason. Either were stuck and giving us an "easier" clue or that we honestly have nothing right now other than a sound we speculate over until we find out what the hell it is. We need our hacking friends to go see if the device can be broken yet and if it can then we know what the hell were looking for...

In sort, its easier looking for numbers or letters rather than both...But who knows with the device...

Anyone else think that were going to get our Rocket Poppeteers things back soon?

ETA: Looks like this might be some kind of sound file.

According to google: "PDP 11/60 computer, Soundstream's interface to transfer data between its recorder and the computer's disks (a pair of Braegen 14" disk drives), digital-to-analog playback hardware, and editing software. "

Just wanted to bring the significance of this back into the thread. The fact the sound is supposed to have been recorded with equipment from the 70's would indicate to me that the means of translating it would also have to have been available in the 70's. The link for the above quote is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundstream
I think it has also been established that we are dealing with a 2-channel audio file, the site says that Soundstreams first "37kHz, 16-bit, two channel" recording was done in 1976.

Not sure if this helps at all (mainly just want to feel like I am adding something Smile )

Phew, so I finally made it through all ten pages. I can't seem to get it to play on my own Embarassed , so I will have to take your guys' word for it with the recordings people posted. I really am focused in on the last note, where it sounds like there might be some pitch bending and other fancy stuff going on. Just thought I'd check in before I messed around with it in protools.

EDIT: And if anyone cares, when I double checked the tones of the notes I got:

C#/Db - F#/Gb - C#/Db - G#/Ab - C/B# - D#/Eb - D#/Eb - G#/Ab

Although I am not too sure about the last one. There's some pitch bending and some messing of the envelope. I'll investigate further, even though it's probably a dead end I am curious. Smile

Figured a second opinion on the notes couldn't hurt.

Double EDIT: Aren't .dat files visual? Shouldn't we be thinking along the lines of a movie rather than sound?

In the spectrum view on Audacity it doesn't reveal any cleverly embedded images, although it does show how fairly discreet and pretty certainly synthetic the tones are. When you switch to the 'pitch' view, it's got a curious look though:

I don't know if this is relevant in any way but, it just struck me after listening to this, that it sounds a bit like when you dial a number on phones and each number has been assigned a separate sound. This would also explain the repeated sound in the middle which struck me as odd at first.
Maybe this is a phone number we're hearing, if so, it's definitely been distorted some what.

Definitely sounds like touch tones to me (slightly distorted but pitch unchanged).

First of all, I clearly hear two distinct tones on each note, which is what phones use (DTMF).

So far (by ear) I get 7679455 or 7679122...and the last one seems to be the # key.

I'm thinking it's not a number to dial but a code to use somewhere.

Anyone got a touch tone phone close enough to their speakers to play this into the phone and see whether it accepts the notes as keypad presses? If they are DTMF tones, it should.

I'm trying to get a phone close enough and having a bit of trouble. Smile

Actually, going back further, Guido of Arezzo invented solfeggio...and something called the Guidonian Hand that may or may not be of use to us.

I have a degree in music history and this is the first time in recorded history that I've actually got to USE it for something. LOL Very Happy

Hey...does anybody have an iPhone with that app that recognizes songs? I can't remember what the name of it is, but you can hold the iPhone up when the app is running and it will identify the song. My husband has it, but he's at the baseball game right now.

Well if the 8th note is the # key as I think, there's not much sense...that would lead me even more it's not intended to be dialled but rather the numbers used for something. But in that wiki article I just referenced on DTMF, I didn't even realize there were also tones for A,B,C,D...

Hey wait a minute, keypads have letters on them too...

i.e. if it was 7679455#, then 7 is the letters PQRS, etc. So 7679455# would be

PQRS
MNO
PQRS
WXYZ
GHI
JKL
JKL
#

Picking a letter from each, hmmm...almost "Roswell", lol.

Really need someone with a touch tone phone they can get by their speakers to figure out if these are phone tones or not.

Well, I'm not entirely sure that touch tone phones actually do that anymore. Still sounds like phone tones to me.
