over a sea as dark as wine

Crothers says in this last episode the words "over a sea as dark as wine" and there is a book in the series by Peter O'Brian called The Wine-Dark Sea. It is number 16 and was written in 1993.

Master and Commander
parallels

I've always thought there were many parallels with the Russell Crowe movie -- going over the top with things like the hasty pudding, the amputation, the red coat, the merchant flag used as deception, the changing course etc. Under this interpretation, the correct path turned around at Columbus Circle and headed past various landmarks on the way toward the Reservoir. (For example, consider the mosaic tribute to John Lennon and the image of the exploding sun with cubes coming out.)

So as a hypothesis, if I were in New York City, I would go to Belvedere Castle and search the environs for a key (see Maddie Hayes "Under the Rainbow" episode).

Under this hypothesis, I would dismiss all the numbers as a reference to Count Von Count who lives in Belvedere Castle.

And I would interpret Episode 7 as referring to the Halloween event they hold there.

Of course, given that so many of seeming clues have gone over my head, I prefer a simpler solution. :0)

We all should be walking more and getting out to see nature. So I hope I can inspire at least one person to go and do photo recon around both the castle and all gothic bridges (from 72nd - 94th). I think the Gothic Bridge was strongly clued by the image of Tom as the fireball going past (directly over) the crow's nest. It is an exact match (IMO).

To be honest, though, I've just been enjoying watching some very talented puppeteers demonstrate their mastery and stopped sweating the details when it got complicated. I find the characters very likable. These puppeteers deserve to be primetime.

whether physical search is necessary
beats me

What UDbmas says, as usual, makes total sense.

In support of urging that someone do photo recon while getting a nature walk at an exquisite location, however, note that you'll also pass Delacorte Theater and the Turtle Pond. And remember all those Arthurian references?

t's also a functional weather station. So I'll have to consider the reference to the moon and to "no wind."

Consider also the pavilion of some sort made out of the melted cannons of the Maine.

The good work you folks did on the subway (which is where I lost interest because of my preference for walks in a park) was justified -- explained -- by the clues that in retrospect seem to have the pirates separate only to arrive in the same place. My hypothesis just suggests that they came back -- and that one course kept you in the park up to 79th or 94th or somewhere in between. I would even stroll places like the apple trees in the northwoods.

I've never walked the area and so forgive any confused references I make to the park.

In Master and Commander
FWIW, the name of the opposing ship was ACHERON

Given what I perceive as the "Under the Rainbow" (bridge) clue and pointers to gothic architecture (including The Gothic Bridge specifically), it is worth noting that the opposing ship that was superior to them ACHERON anagrams to ONE ARCH and so if I were there I would visit all of the several (as I vaguely recall) iron bridges -- there is one that like The Gothic Bridge that has the same squids on tops of the rails on either end.

The ship's vulnerability was between wind and water -- the back of the boat as it rose from the water. The young officer built a model of the superior design which indicated its vulnerability. Russell Crowe felt obligated to pursue it before it got out of the region given its superior design and fortification. (That required the deception, for example, involving the merchant flag (green flag with yellow diamond). Crowe's ship ("Surprise") pretended to be a whaling ship.

(Beware the octopus).

Belvedere Castle itself looks like the ACHERON
with the turret (the second highest point in Park) in back

Maybe the treasure location can be seen -- and maybe the clues best interpreted -- from the Crow's Nest.

facts about Belvedere Castle from Wikipedia
wouldn't you send folks to most beautiful spot in most beautiful park?

The Observatory contains family-friendly displays that demonstrate the process by which naturalists observe their world and share their scientific discoveries about it. The displays, which include telescopes, microscopes, skeletons and feathers, are designed to expose children to fundamentals of the scientific method in natural observation. Other Observatory exhibits include a plywood tree with papier-mâché reproductions of birds often seen in Central Park, encouraging people to watch for these birds from the precipice of the castle, which has become one of New York's most popular birdwatching sites.

Free family and community programs hosted at Belvedere Castle include "On A Wing" birding programs, stargazing, astronomy talks, storytimes with the Princess of Belvedere Castle, and the "Spooks at Belvedere" haunted castle event every Halloween.

Interesting facts

Belvedere Castle was used in exterior shots of the castle where Count von Count lived on Sesame Street.[8]

Just after restoration, the building was used as a filming location for Merchant-Ivory's 1984 film The Bostonians, starring Christopher Reeve and Vanessa Redgrave.

The turret of the Castle is the highest point in the park.[9]
