I also think the Google map is not staying on the actual roads. Check that too.

Prelude to Episode 2

The locations on the map are accurate. I'm not sure what you mean about staying on the roads. I chose to stay on the roads largely because I don't think the puppetmasters expect you to trespass or have to hack your way through a forest to retrace their steps. Choosing the direct routes from point to point doesn't change the picture all that much anyway. If you like I can make a direct point to point map and share that as well.

Anyway, while creative, I'm not sure that your idea that the "key" to solving the puzzle is finding words associated with a hidden location each week and then piecing the words together, is correct.

Another possibility, which I find to be more likely, is that the locations when mapped will form a picture which will hint to the ultimate location of the buried treasure. The fact that Mulligan refers to a drawing as the "ultimate" code is suggestive of this.

By the way, the numbers Black Tom rattled off in this episode seem to me to be a clear indication of addresses, specifically:

1. 23 East 63rd Street, New York, NY

2. 51 East 62nd Street, New York, NY

3. 29 East 62nd Street, New York, NY

These are all close enough to the ending point in this episode of Grand Army Plaza at 59th Street and Fifth Ave, to be plausible next points on the map. Here is a another Google Map updated with those points.

I am not sure what you have posted about the numbers have anything to do with this map as it is for the next episode right? We will see about the message. I think it is probably too early to count our chickens yet. I just said I "think" it could probably be a message we are looking for with eight words or combos of words to spell out where it is. It has to be put together probably or go to another map or something. I think rather than telling each other what is wrong with our theories, it may be more productive in working together with various ones til we come up with the correct one. What do you say fellowtraveler? Are you up for that?

What I meant by Google maps not staying on the roads is that your map looked like the road to the gold was not staying on the actual roads but was tresspassing. Is it staying on the roads? I couldn't tell. I was asking.

Hey, I just said that my theory was another possibility. I didn't mean for it to sound like I was shooting your theory down entirely. I think it is very creative (and said as much above) and I certainly wouldn't have come up with it on my own. In any event, I completely agree with you that it is too early to tell what the "ultimate" code will turn out to be.

I see what you meant about the map now. The only times I went off-road were going from the Balto statue to the mall to the point north of the Shakespeare and Columbus statues and then down between those two statues to get to the Dairy.

A revised map sticking strictly to the road (but still going between the two statues as required by the clue) can be found here. As you can see, it doesn't really change shape all that much. Incidentally, you would have to go off-road a little to get to Overlook Rock as well.

Thanks for revising it. Glad we can work together collectively. That makes it fun.

Fellowtraveler, why don't you sign up to the forums? We're all friendly here and don't bite.

And Tammy, it's nice if you've got new ideas and you were the last person to reply to edit your last post whenever you can. Keeps the page nice and readable. Smile

I like the map, by the way.

It seems that knowledge of New York will be useful in this quest, which is a shame for those of us who've never been. Still, I'm staying onboard (harhar) for the time being anyway because the pirates are cute. lol`

Thanks I will try to remember to do that. I don't mean to litter it up. Smile

Order of locations

Tom's numbers (if they do belong in this sequence) come between the Shakespeare and Columbus statues and the Dairy. I had thought the Captain meant that the "luckiest man alive" clue belonged to the next episode, but now I think he did mean Tom's numbers. It could be the numbers are associated with the luckiest man, they seemed to me to come as a comment on the flashback.

So if a sketch of the route is the information we seek, and if the addresses belong in the sketch of the route for this episode, and if the order the codes are given are the order they should be in in the sketch, then the addresses belong between the statues and the dairy.

I have doubts about Overlook rock being the "highest point". It is high, but clearly not the highest point in the park. I don't see what "crows' nest" has to do with Overlook rock either, unless it is the similarity of "lookout" (a word not used) and "overlook". Clearly it does fit well with the grouping of the other locations, a strong point. I think that we can't say that this is a "missing" location. Whatever the "highest point" code refers to, what makes it different from any of the other coded locations?

Sarah B. by the way, I did sign up, but no confirmation email arrived.

I guess I wasn't sure whether or not I would be participating here for long enough to make it worth my while to register formally. But seeing as how this game will be going on for the next eight weeks I probably will be. Also, looking around the forums I notice you have threads for some other games I am interested in like Echo Bazaar, etc.

So here I am. As the game goes on, maybe I will open up my Google Maps for collaborative editing by some of the other regulars so we can work on this together more efficiently.

Luckiest man alive

"The Luckiest Man Alive" is the name given to a speech that Lou Gehrig (of the New York Giants) made, describing the great luck he had had in talent, opportunity, love, and friendship. He did not actually utter the words, as far as I can tell, saying instead "I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth".

I don't see any spots in Central Park that are particularly associated with Gehrig or the Giants. Maybe this clue does belong in the next episode.

While I'm not Fellowtraveler, I took this advice and decided to sign up today after watching the latest video and finding this thread.

I think I'm going to head up to Central Park after work tonight and just scope out the area. I think the consensus here is that it's still quite early and there won't be much to find, but it won't hurt. Maybe I'll just confirm the exact locations for the map and check out The Captain's favorite rock. Smile

The only other thing I wanted to add right now is that I'm so drawn to the ship name. When I watched the first video last month, the name was obscured so frustratingly that I was convinced it was a clue somehow. Funny that it ends up being "Maddie Hayes" because I've been watching the first two seasons of Moonlighting on DVD over the past couple weeks. It just could be a reference to how rare the treasure hunt is ("Blue Moon") or maybe the path might turn out to be a crescent shape. Or it could just be a funny 80s reference. We'll see...

chinese finger trap code

Dose: oral 140 mg, nasal 100 mg
My proposed street name: Christ

There is a cult/church on the Lower East Side of New York called the Temple of the True Inner Light that has been taking this drug as the Eucharist for the last 30 years. Apparently it's tough to join because they already have enough people willing to participate in Holy Communions where they smoke Christ's psychedelic flesh out of a communal pipe instead of eating a flavorless wafer. Understandable.

The first time I snorted DPT it terrified me so much I felt like I had just railed a line of haunted houses. Eyeballs were peeping out of everything around me and when I looked up I saw a giant Chinese finger trap made of rainbows try to suck me into the sky. Also, snorting it was so painful it made me cry. I would rather snort a handful of sand.

Read more: "A GIANT CHINESE FINGER TRAP MADE OF RAINBOWS..." - PART 1 - Vice Magazine

this is what i found about a chinese finger trap in new york...make any sence to anyone? i noticed no one has made any references to this code but it has to mean something.

and also mulligan goes running by the captain with something in his hand...it is like a pirate scope...with a red cloth at the end of it and it makes sence that he would go to the crows nest which is very high up and he would have to look at something far away.

I am not familiar with the "church" you referenced, but I don't think it has anything to do with the hunt...at least I hope not Razz

In any case, the address for said wonky church is
207 East 5th Street
New York, NY 10003

just in case...

Also, putting this here in the event we need to reference it later 9but there are a ton of "Crow's Nest bars/restaurants in the state of NY and it's probably not at all this literal):

Perched atop the crusty Water Club restaurant, the Crow's Nest has a front-row view of the East River, making it feel like the upper deck of a cruise ship.

Going to walk the trail so far tonight

I think I agree with what everyone has said so far. It would be pretty lame if the first seven videos did nothing but push the trail along. There must be more. I am mostly intrigued by three things right now:

1) Window sill vs. window cele
2) The string of numbers spouted by Tom (if they are numbers, I don't speak Japanese.)
3) The footprints drawing

Tonight after work I'm going to walk the complete trail from 72nd street all the way to army. I will be looking closely at all landmarks and especially Overlook rock. I am going to really look for 'footprint' clues.
