Crabs to me imply they were on a beach ... thats just me though .. I mean unless theres a legendary pirate that had a STD .....

I know a few people have cited "Nigel Gibson" .. did anyone mention that Nigel Gibson was a miner?

But who knows .. perhaps our Puppet Masters are big Debbie Gibson and Nigel Lythgoe fans ....

then again NIGEL was also the name of a MUPPET from The Muppet Show ..so a lil ... I dont know .. STRANGE ... for puppeteers to dub one of "their characters" the same name as a Jim Henson Muppet character

any how

A few logical things here:

1) What do we know about our Puppet Masters? And I mean this as a respectful question not trying to dig into their personal lives ...I dont really care to know the name of their prom dates or home addresses ...but .. what do we know thats been given to us? Just thinking along the lines of getting into their heads a bit to try to decipher their thinking process with this. We got two guys in their early 30's from Brooklyn whom are obviously very talented with puppets and codes/riddles. We know they're interested in detective shows/books , horror films particularly George Romero (though side note I hope they didnt waste their $ on the 2010 remake of The Crazies...) ...baseball ... what else do we know?

2) If the Puppet Masters' mission is to garner some fame/recognition for their talents off this contest ...I would logically think they'd get a lot more press coverage for the treasure being found at a well known location. For instance wouldnt you be more intrigued to pick up a newspaper that reads "$10,000 PIRATE TREASURE FOUND AT BASE OF EMPIRE STATE BUILDING" as opposed to "...FOUND IN JOE SHMO'S BACKYARD IN QUEENS"?

3) Would pirates really bury their treasure very inland? I mean granted NYC is an island .. but .. are pirates going to trek miles and miles on foot lugging a heavy treasure chest?

4) The FAQ's on here clearly state "do not start digging randomly, you'll know when you've found it". Okay logically , 99% of all pirate treasures involve "X MARKS THE SPOT" .. and I dont think they've hired former NY Knicks star Xavier McDaniel to be the personal 24/7 security guard of the treasure chest. So whats their X gimmick? Are we looking for some elaborate masonic style coordinate system to make an "X" shape on a map? Are we looking for a physical "X" shape? Perhaps something funky happens upon a sunset or when moonbeams hit something?

Why not share with the rest of the class? That *IS* what this message board is for, no?

Yes, but they also said it would be buried. We had discussions before on the legality of burying it on commercial property. Can't exactly walk into the Bank of New York rotunda with a shovel and 2 guys dressed like coal miners lol

Maybe a more obsure "homage" to Buffy the Vampire slayer? Anthony Head (now playing Uther Pendragon in "Merlin") played a character named Nigel Gibson in an episode of NYPD Blue called "Cold Heaters"... Confused

Nice call;

about that episode:

Bobby reluctantly meets with his old "friend" Ray DiSalvo, who wants out of his admittedly unfair long stay at Rikers and has hard facts about an old robbery case that left two retired cops dead. Bobby runs with the case only to see that IAB is already there, but has to face two hard truths: IAB's Sgt. Martens is a non-idiot who knows what the hell he's doing, and Ray sold him out earlier. Bobby tells Ray that after he gets his deal, he never wants to see him or speak to him again. Lt. Fancy takes center stage when a shooting at a bodega leaves a Latino punk dead, and he learns the punk beat up a good citizen's kid before a shootout. Fancy and Andy work together seamlessly to make sure the citizen won't face jail time. Greg handles a dispute between a young actor and the abusive, egocentric star who's been giving him hell on the set of a play, and manages to get both parties to live and let live.

Notes

Anthony Stewart Head guest stars as Nigel Gibson.

--------

I mean I understand that "Nigel Gibson" worked with African studies at Columbia ... but .. he also worked at Harvard ...and now at Emerson ... I would think NYPD Blue might be a more relevant thing for a NYC treasure hunt, but who knows.

ALSO ... in The Larry King episode .. Mulligan puts over the show FIREFLY..."why did they cancel that show Firefly, that was a good show" .. the dude that created Firefly also created Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

and King Koopa: yes for sure .. I agree with your point , I just think the location is going to be something ....that the average person would prolly know or something logical as opposed to a random street address ..but I could be totally wrong ..it could be at ...I dont know what was Bill Cosby's address on The Cosby Show in Brooklyn? Could be anywhere , was just an initial feeling.

Are you saying this is a "Cosby Mystery?"

FILTHY FLERM FILTHY FLERM WHO ATE THE LAST POODIN' POP FILTHY FLERM!!!

lol

OK, then it seems that the crabs may just be yet another red herring. Has anyone considered the relevance of them appearing on Larry King instead of someone else? Like Keith Olbermann or Jay Leno?

Aright I noticed something I hadn't noticed before. The 2 crabs (Nigel & Gibson) are seen on the site links, and there appears to be writing scrawled on the map itself all over the place. Can anyone read any of it?

OK, I gotta pipe up here - just a general statement, not directed at the guy who said this because he has expressed some limitations I'm going to reiterate.

Many of you don't know me except on this game, but I've been on Unfiction for 8 years now, and have both played and worked behind the scenes on many games. I'm an avid puzzle solver, avid puzzle creator, and a giant fan of both "interactive fiction" and "alternate reality gaming", which is the main purpose of this site (Unfiction).

So I hope you feel you can trust me when I say that the easiest way to destroy this game and everything these guys have worked so hard to give us for entertainment is to learn more about the creators before the game is over. These guys have put a lot of love into what they've given us - it drips from the pores of every puppet we've seen. They've put huge amounts of time and money in as well. We know they worked with set designers, production people, scriptwriters - it stands to reason that the treasure hunt underlying this was thoroughly developed and is intended to be solvable, even though we haven't been able to do it yet.

Why am I sure it's solvable? Well, if for no other reason than they've made this go public - their future livelihoods are going to be at considerable stake if they're lying to us. And judging just from what they've done here, they are clearly NOT that stupid. They haven't been dogging us, they've been careful to call out fraudulent photoshoppers... and they've done it completely in character as their pirates.

Now, is there information out there? Sure. For instance, I know exactly why Doggie Academy got props in the poker video. And while there was no invasion of privacy to learning that, it has nothing to do with the game, at all. It is perhaps amazing what you can find but in the long run, learning about THEM shouldn't tell you a damn thing about the puzzle behind this game.

So to those of you thinking of being sneaky, I can assure you from direct experience with games of similar nature to this that the makers will not be hanging around the burial place every night after work, and they're certainly not talking loudly into their cellphones about "have you been to that park yet? Was anyone there?". They are not sending e-mails about it to be hacked into, and their families know nothing of any use to the game. Seriously - the longer this takes, the more people will give it a try. That was the whole idea, to make this go viral. I say "Bravo" to them for their patience with the whole endeavor and with us.

So please - finding out information about them is 99.5% or more likely to have no bearing on this game and could only serve to hurt them as individuals somehow. Why would anyone want to do that? I personally want to see these guys come out with more stuff. Mario's Word of the Day is freaking genius. Cyanoacrylate? F'ing hilarious. I did think it was perhaps a teeny bit cheesy that they plugged their own old stuff, but that's cool, cuz their old stuff is good! Heh.

So, on behalf of puzzle/game writers as well as players of such games, I ask you to please respect the fourth wall (the wall that separates the characters from the makers in interacting with the players). You will not be missing ANYTHING you can use, and you will lose at least some of the magic of the fiction, just like you would knowing how a magic trick is done.

Now back to solving and snarkily sniping at each other. Thank you for reading. Smile

Zoomed in pretty close. Short answer no. Some guesses, but not helpful (eg: I think it says Maddie Hayes under the ship). There may be something to the map. In which case, the map vis-a-vis the squid would be reinforcing something most NY'ers already know. Try ta Avoid Staten Island. Wink

Sin Vraal: dude...NOOOOO disrespect intended at all, nor was I trying to suggest that this puzzle was unsolvable ...as I politely already said ..I do not want details on their personal lives ..just was curious as to what we knew already as some things might be applicable .. like I dont know ...2 minutes ago I made a comment about Brooklyn Dodger great Jackie Robinson ... a minute later someone responded with "Clue 42" (he um wore #42) ... thats all ... relax.
