I think we're meant to view the whole thing in reverse order, in terms of scenes, based on what Cruthers says over Clue 41. So, Clue 43, Clue 28, Clue 42, Clue 41, then Tom's backwards addition?

Don't forget about Crothers

Poor guy. He lost his arm and he's on crutches.

For what it's worth, looking for something 28 furlongs long in the NYC area gives me nothing. It's roughly the length of lower Manhattan, from Battery Park to Central Park.

He said "now you've gone too far". It's less than 28 furlongs.

BQE

Just a very half-baked brainstorm, driven by the fact that I'm still obsessing about the Roosevelt Ave. stop from the last episode:

Just a little north of there is St. Micheal's Playground, which touches Exits 41 and 43 of the BQE (a way I definitely don't know, as a New Yorker) and 28th Ave on its western border. Northern Blvd. is just to the south.

Probably not though.

部 is Chinese? Are kanji used in both Japanese and Chinese?

The Black tom!

Tom's "Japanese" is actually backwards talk.

He's saying
Quote:
Sometimes to follow the way, you must avoid the way you've come.

Weeeell.. 43, 28, 42, 41. If the 28 is just a distance, we have 434241, or 142434. Again with the 1,2,3,4 obsession. Any ideas anyone?

Sorry again about the delay, but the transcript for the fourth episode has been posted here now along with the associated translations, images and the reversed audio. They keep posting these videos earlier and earlier it looks like. Obviously given the short length of the episode a transcript isn't as necessary as usual, but to maintain continuity I thought it would be worth posting anyway.

I will provide my analysis later tonight for those who might be interested. My first thought however, is that the clue numbers might be referring to bus lines, perhaps reversing course back into Manhattan.

Looking at the bus lines, I'm not sure. The bus lines are broken up by borough, and only Brooklyn has #s 41, 42, and 43. And they travel the length of Brooklyn, from Greenpoint (extreme north Brooklyn, Queens border) to Canarsie (far to the southeast).

41 and 43 cross once, near Prospect Park, but 42 is only a few blocks long, and unconnected to the others.

galenblade: Yes, I made the same observations using this map. Of course I thought that the trail ended in Brooklyn after the last episode so the fact that those bus lines co-existed looked promising. I agree with you that the disconnect between the 42 line and the other lines is problematic. Another thing pointing to Brooklyn is the use of the Japanese characters for "North division" since the MTA's bus routes only include North divisions in Brooklyn and Queens. The reason I thought the course might be headed back into Manhattan was because a 28 bus line runs there, and it would also match Black Tom's reversed statement to a degree. Anyway, like I said, it was just my initial hunch.

The tricky thing about this episode is that we will need to try to work backwards to figure out the starting point as well, since we never properly solved the last episode either. The fact that this episode is so short isn't really helping us though.

Could they actually be what they say?

Maybe the 41, 42, 43 are really just saying that Black Tom's words are the 41st clue, Crothers' statement about insult is the 42nd clue, and Crothers' statement "now you've gone too far" is the 43rd clue. It is not clear to me if the 28 and/or the furlongs would be 42 or 43.
