possible connection?

Ok so i saw a similar link posted so those of you who feel the need to trout me i probably deserve it Very Happy However, this is a little different.
Beckley WV has a 25801 area code so I searched for alien sightings in the area and came up with this:

http://www.register-herald.com/local/x519083359/Alien-contact-came-in-52-author-says

What I find interesting is the part about the boys seeing the Flatwoods Monster... Maybe one of them brought a super 8 camera Wink

The marker

Could it be that the marker is not a marker, but lipstick?

I don't see why it couldn't be a lipstick case. I had a similar thought when i was looking for images of laser pointers.

Max Factor - Colour Perfection Lipstick looks similar, but the end is too flat.

They could have an earlier design that was longer and rounder. This may suggest that our helper is a woman (or at least enjoys some lip color once and a while).

Maybe not a pen?

Could the object in question be a Mini Screwdriver?

Those look pretty new. I don't remember seeing anything like those in the late 70's, but doesn't mean they weren't around.
'Course, we still don't know for sure that the pic. is recent or period, in which case I'll say, "Could be".

Nice find Ras, I even own a set of those and they never even crossed my mind. Great little set of tools for a tinkerer such as myself. I don't think those are the item in question though. I still think it is a marker intentionally placed to imply that he/she was the one to mark the film with STIES. Just to hard for me to overlook. But you win the prize for finding a picture of something closest resembling the item in the photo.

I think it totally looks like lipstick, as right here: http://www.joseibi.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/shiseido_lipstick.jpg
It also kind of makes sense now that person B or who ever sent the second message would be a woman. The message said "now I have it" like she just got something, and she is showing the film in the image so it makes sense that she got the reel in the mail, not the hat, and and she just took off her hat and set it on the box when she took it out (maybe the whole reason for the hat being here was to tell us a woman sent this picture and message). And most film makers know better than not to have a female main character because guys get bored if there isn't something pretty to look at. Just my opinion, though.

Wow you guys, really? Ok, I AM a woman, alright? And I have lipsticks, and I can tell you, that no woman would just leave an open lipstick lying half underneath some dusty looking stereo or record player or reel to reel whatever!! That's just ludicrous!! That's a great way to ruin a perfectly good lipstick.

And as for the hat, while it's possible that if it was a woman, she was wearing the hat and took it off and placed it on top of the box, I still think it's highly unlikely that someone would put something they owned on top of a box that's marked "sold". And don't tell me you think that a post-it survived going through the mail. There's no way.
