"Scariest" thing?

Headman wrote:

Yes, and one of the basic elements of magic is misdirection; dare I say red herring, or maybe more appropos, blue Coelacanth?

And as far as being worthy of being the "scariest thing," as has been discussed on one of the S8 forums, that's going to be quite a high mark to achieve, for what would be the most "scariest" thing for me, may not be for others. It would be an interesting concept if Team JJ went along those lines, i.e. if each person in the movie that sees "it," sees something that is to them the "scariest" thing they've ever saw.

And there would definitley be a challenge in atempting to put on film something such as the Rorschach images that have been discussed ad infinitum on the trailer analysis forum, on screen so that the image of "it" was open to interpretation by the viewing audience.

JJ even alluded to the mystery of not seeing the shark in Jaws (until sometime had passed in the movie) and the Alien in "Alien" when he spoke at the "TED" program, ala "the mystery box" as has been discussed in the aforementioned forum and linked to. (I thought that was a fascinating interview, BTW--showing that the themes WE think are central in such movies as "Jaws" and "ET" are maybe not the most important facets that the director had in mind.)

And on that note, I watched "Inception" today and came out feeling
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
that it wasn't so much about dream-jacking/altering, but more importantly trust, guilt, and redemption.

Dude, I think you need to calm down.
Did you really expect some to spend hours sifting through hundreds of pages just to see if someone mentioned a theory on whether the creature was awakened?

What's the big deal if he posts this or not?

Isn't there a more respectful and less demeaning way of reminding somone of a previously discussed post?

Coelacanth and "it"

Ok, so after reading way more about Coelacanths than I would have if not for Josh Minker's blog, I have come to the conclusion that either Minker is a complete dufus or he isn't really talking about a Coelacanth. If this was already clear to everyone else, I apologize for my slow brain.
Quote:
FEB 4: "I just want to help the Coelacanth survive. Seems weird to live in a world without them. Anyway, hopefully this journal will chronicle my success."

Coelacanths are an endangered species. There are several organizations which are trying to aid in their survival.
Quote:
"A fisherman in Boston claims he can find a Coelacanth for me in under two weeks. Says he's done it before for a few other collectors and will be happy to do it for me since my intentions are honorable."

This is BS. He's tried to buy one legally (not possible as they are an endangered species), on the black market, and finally through an expedition to catch one (his best bet, but no one has ever keep a Coelacanth alive after catching one since 1. they live 600 feet down in cold water and 2. the warm water of the surface of the ocean is enough to kill one).
Quote:
How am I supposed to prep the tank? I should do some more research……

A Coelacanth cannot live in a home aquarium even if one could keep it alive long enough to put it in there.

If all the Coelacanth talk is code for something else, perhaps the "it that must be kept hidden until further contact," with whom is he communicating?

Quote:
Stop posting publicly. I can answer your questions. I have proof.

Is Minker the keeper of "it" or is he the seeker of "it?"

It's very frustrating for those that are following the game to come across posts that have been mentioned already. Especially when there is a Topic, at the beginning of the thread, just for the rules.

If people want to play the game, they should play nice like the rest of us. We've all read the 100's of pages. That's sort of a rite of passage. Plus, new ideas are better formed when you've seen what other people have suggested already.

No need to reinvent the wheel.

Everyone's input here is valued. That should work both ways - just check to see if your idea was posted already. That's not too much to ask.

As for the tone of Melodyman's reply... it could have been sweeter, but don't take it too hard. We just want you to do some research first.

^_^

A more respectfull way?

For those of you who are offended when you're called on the carpet because you either neglected to, or refused to read the forum rules, them, let me add my two cents worth:

I wasn't invited, or coerced, to join, or even post as a guest, but when you make the conscientious decision to make "your" thought known without reading/following just some simple rules of etiquette and decorum, don't whine when someone brings it to your attention that you should have used the "search" function.

I haven't been "trouted" yet, and I haven't "trouted" anyone (though I've hinted that the person was opening themselves up for a fish slap)—I've tried to be courteous.

I have never been a part of this ARG realm before, but just to put things into context, I wrote online novels for years—didn't receive a dime—and thousands of readers read them, and claimed to enjoy them. I had my own e-mail address posted and have received many nice letters from readers. On the site (and it still exists) were archives so that a person who subscribed after the first 23 pages had already been sent out—they weren't up the creek not knowing what had previously happened before in any of the novels. They could start from the beginning and catch up.

But think about it, if I had to answer hundreds of letter from new subscribers asking what "happened before I joined" I would have got upset. NO ONE every queried about that because they had access to the archives, and enough common sense to read them.

This really isn't any different here. It is frustrating, as a person who is trying to follow some very interesting reasoning in their comments to have to read through (on at least every 5th page) a comment, sometimes much more long-winded that mine, that has already been covered numerous times.

Rather than accepting a reproof for misconduct, the moderators could spend hours going through and just not posting comments that often have been discussed on the first few pages of the thread.

If you don't want to play by the rules, go somewhere where there aren't any.

And "respect" is earned.

And no sooner have the rules been clarified, and yet another poster does the same thing! I'm thinking conspiracy!

[META] Play Nice

To boil our Terms of Service here at unFiction down to two words:
Play Nice

A few key reminders:
The trout exists as a playful way to point new users to previous discussions of the ideas they present. Using the convention correctly guides the user to where they can catch up, and teaches them how and where to look for resources to keep up with the game. Berating a new user does not.

Posting under multiple IDs, whether as a registered user or guest, is a violation of unFiction's Terms of Service. If you have created an ID and have lost or forgotten how to access it, you can post in our General forum for assistance, or contact one of the site's Administrators. More information to contact uF if you can not post in the forums for some reason can also be found in those same forums. If you feel you must post as a guest, use a variation of your normal ID, e.g. 'Joe-offline'. This shows good faith and transparency instead of fostering suspicions of or demonstrating trollish behaviors.

Again, remember...

Play Nice

I agree. He should have read through the ages thoroughly as we all have.

But MelodyMan didn't have to be a dick about it. It happens all the time from new users, which is why the trout was invented to begin with. Using that tone only discourages newbies from posting at all.

...And it seems as my admonition about multiple account posting, even as a guest, is possibly being ignored I may have to request the admins disable guest posting in Super 8.

Remember, help fix the problem - don't make it worse.

What's so difficult about playing nice/by the rules

Euchre said it all.

Where in REAL life do rules NOT have consequences? (We're not talking about movies, politicians, or celebrities.)

Wherein you may feel someone is a euphemism for the male reproductive organ, were you being respectful by calling him that?

How would you feel if he responded by calling you the female equivalent?

I'll assume, for the sake of argument, that you have a job Harley.

What would you expect if you broke the rules...over and over and over.

Or numerous new employees failed to read their orientation/work manual and broke the rules and the boss did zilch, or tried, in nice terms to get someone back on the straight and narrow with little, if any results?

It only drags down everyone, especially the abuser of the rules, because if one rule can be broke, why abide by any.

Again, "play nice" or play somewhere else where there are no rules. I mean, it's not like one or two persons are being singled out because they've broke the rules. I've witnessed experienced users on this site get admonitions from the moderators, and if anything, I feel that the moderation on this site has been at least, if not more as tolerant than I've seen on others.

Seems to me that the only ones pitching a fit over "respect" and "unfairness" are the very ones guilty of breaking the rules themselves.

And if a newbie, which I consider myself, is going to be so distraught over being corrected, rather than being molly coddled, they need to go to a site that takes their maturity level into consideration and is willing to "make the owie" go away with a kiss and a cookie.

To me the OP is the rude party here..

One does not come into a movie halfway thru and begin guessing at what they have missed by annoying those around them who took the time to arrive at the beginning and already know what has transpired.

Not only that, but to post it in the wrong thread as well shows a complete lack of respect for this site and the dedicated Argonauts who follow proper procedures.

I doubt whether the OP will repeat this as a result.
Nuff said.
