Re: something found on the front

ReRez wrote:
A mod should post the solved code on the first page then. To avoid people like myself messing up. I got somewhere in this thread many pages deep and one person listed 3 names after a picture with possible Letters.

The guy after him suggested adding a 1 to the end of the code

Encoms Game Sector
Encoms Play Sector
I Forgot the 3rd one.

After reading that. I didn't see an S after the "encom" or the place for a 1. So I tried my hands at something someone else posted, unaware that someone had the solve and proof to back up the claim of what the code actually spelt.

The point is not to help new forum members avoid reading what other players have written/suggested/solved. The point — and you're encouraged to do this when you JOIN the forum — is to read what others have written so you can contribute already up-to-speed.

Reading posts from prior to your arrival not only makes you a better contributor, it shows respect for veterans who have already done the work you skipped over.

Taking the time to read others' ideas and progress (or failure) may well inspire a new idea of your own which breaks the game open. But then you'll be assured it's YOUR idea this time — and you'll be showered with brownies and stroopwafel instead of trout. Very Happy

So read up and we all look forward to new contributions. The fun has barely started yet!

Just got mine here in Montreal. Astro-Gunner. The dots are the same as the others.
Unfortunately it sat in my mailbox all day in this heat wave we're having and now it's pretty warped. But at least I got one, I was getting worried that it might have gotten lost in the mail.

Many of the issues we're experiencing have a simple solution that works on most any decent-sized forum...

Geez, we haven't figured this out yet?!? I refuse to believe it's this complicated; it would go against everything so far.

I realize that several people have said that the bars on the front of the card are postal markings and should be ignored - but just to clarify, is it normal for articles mailed through the post office to have TWO sets of barcodes? Because there's two sets on these postcards - the nearly-invisible one on the front, and the obvious black-and-white one on the back, beneath the black bar with the dots.

Are those BOTH being used by the post office, or did we overlook something here?

im willing to bet other "regular" postcards people have gotten also have this coding on it

please use the search function...i know we have LOT of first time posters on here...but i gotta believe that most of them HAVE posted on some forum before...and know some etiquette...just search...and voila!

then you dont have to post "i dont know know if this has already been posted" at the beginning of your post. youll already know!

Yes, I saw that - that isn't what I was asking. I know the nearly-invisible code on the FRONT is a postal code; my question was, is it normal for postcards to have TWO barcodes? Because there's also the regular printed code on the back - and I don't know if these are both used together, or if that's a dummy code.

That all being said... I have a completely different theory on this that just hit me - I don't have time to explore it myself, but maybe someone else can take it and run with it, as I don't believe it's been suggested yet (didn't see it in search). Somebody suggested a while back that maybe it was a map to the Exhibit Hall, rather than a code - then I noticed over at FlynnLives.com that the SQUARE dots on the black bar look suspiciously similar to the square dots on a map on the website - the one in the screenshot from Space Paranoids.

What if it IS a map - and we just had the location wrong? What if it's a map to Space Paranoids? Perhaps the dots line up somehow with the sectors in the game. More, I remember a poster stating that when you put the different postcards together, there's one dot that overlaps - what if that's the digital "X marks the spot" on our map of the game?

The front lines that are 'invisible' are not part of the postal code. I have astro Gunner and i found the same lines, but they are not part of the postal code. I hope someone can figure it out. Strangely it can be smudged.

I'm 100% sure the black barcode is the postnet routing code for my Zip+4 delivery area. I checked it.

The fluorescent barcode is something internal to the USPS' sorting and routing functions and is very much like the Canadian Post "CPC Binary" postal code. In this case it's a binary representation of a unique sequential "control" number assigned to the document. I know this by comparing the three cards we got in my household and noting that two of them differ only in the last few bars where one has no 2s bit but does have a 1s bit and the other is the opposite. Since there isn't a lot of information about this schema available, I'd bet it's at least partially a post-911 security measure.

As am I.
Only the first sentence of my last reply dealt with the black barcode.

I just add :

Quote:
Postnet Barcode (Postal Numeric Encoding Technique)

Postnet barcode is widely used by the U.S Postal Service. It is a numeric symbology that uses five bars and four spaces. A constant width and spacing is used throughout the symbol. It is a clocked technology in which a scan through the bottom of the bars provides a timing track.

Postnet barcode encodes data in half and full-height bars. Most often, the delivery point is added, usually being the last two digits of the address or PO box number

UV barcode on the front of the cards

I used to work at a place that prints postcards, and also mailed them for customers. The USPS reserves the right to utilize certain "zones" for use by their automated barcoding and sorting equipment. Typically, this on the back, taking up the bottom 5/8" of the card.

But there are a lot of variables to this, including pre-approved printings with postal permits, the size of the card (postcards can be up to 6.5" x 11" and still get postcard rate), the design of the card, the particular type of equipment that processed the piece... etc. Most people don't realize what a complete hodge-podge of different equipment the USPS uses through all of it's different locations and facilities.

Some postal equipment will spray an internal sorting barcode on the front of the piece, so that no matter which side of the card runs past the scanner... it will still be scanned properly. This internal barcode can be light flourescent orange, or sometimes UV ink.

I received an Astro Gunner card, and it has a UV barcode on the front, in the bottom 5/8", directly opposite of the barcode on the back side of the card, if you flip it over. This is definitely a USPS barcode... not some sort of code from the people running the ARG. Besides, if the game DID put a barcode in one of the valid zones reserved by the USPS, it most likely would have been rejected by the post office who received the mailing to process as it could interfere with the postal sorting equipment. If that happens, the piece has to be hand sorted, which costs substantially more to the person doing the mailing.

I found this link with a little more info about this:
Mailingsystemtechnology.com link

And here is a link to the postal regulations that we guided customers to before they designed their postcards:
http://www.modernpostcard.com/knowledge/preparing-materials/mailing-guidelines/postal-regulations

There! More info than you ever wanted to know about the US Post Office and their barcoding! Smile

Twenty... eight... years...? Sheesh, I'm freakin' ancient! Forty-three next month. Older than Jeff Bridges was in the original (by about 10 years!!!). I should just kill myself now. ~sigh~
