The Old Man and His Cat

The Old Man & His Cat

A Dream within a Dream...
The Truth within the Lie...

[The following is wild speculation.
In case any of it turns out to be true...
Don’t read it if you think it will spoil any surprises for you.
Otherwise: Enjoy.]

For me it was that Barrymore profile thing.

When I was a child, watching old movies on TV...
I learned you could tell a Barrymore by looking at the profile.
John, Ethel, Lionel and even little Drew all have that beautiful profile.

In last weeks episode, I caught sight of the Old Man's profile...

You know, the Old Man who’s been parked at Martha’s table since the first time we saw her with her breakfast “crowd”sitting there watching Sunny Dupree and “Good Morning Push” on TV?

Now... Jim has a pretty characteristic shape to his nose...
And I could be mistaken...
But all of a sudden, there was Jim's nose on the Old Man's face.

So... it hit me.
The Old Man at Martha's table isn't Jim's father.

He's Jim. The Old Man is JIM... Himself.

And I think Martha may be his wife.
Jim may have chosen her as a wife because she’s motherly,
a quality seemingly lacking in his own mother?

Something Jim did -- possibly something wrong that he did --
ended up putting him where he is now.

Somehow he managed to survive being in that trunk in the desert heat...
or under water (?).

Maybe the car ended up in that dry riverbed that we see on the map,
with the boy in the trunk.

Maybe the only thing that saved him from the desert heat...
was a little flash flood -- something that happens in the desert --
filling the riverbed, cooling things off.

Maybe that “splash” we hear was the first droplet of rain hitting the car...
Maybe it’s a splash of gasoline...

Maybe Jim’s father, not realizing the boy was in the trunk, tried to leave his loveless marriage and life of drudgery and boredom behind by faking his death, and PUSH-ed his car into a ravine... somewhere between the edge of Push, NV and the Twilight Zone...

So then... it would be Jim’s father’s voice saying to himself: “Prufrock, you have to die!”

And the only thing the kid did wrong was to climb into that trunk.

Whatever caused it, Jim’s ability to live a normal life has been seriously damaged. The man is impaired.

Whether it was the deadly heat...
or the claustrophobic experience of being trapped in a trunk in his father’s car in some riverbed or reservoir or whatever body of water the car may have ended up in for whatever reason, physical or emotional, Jim’s life has been stunted...

Like “a stumped dump pawn.”

But Jim lives on in his head...
And Martha spoon-feeds him his soup...
As he perhaps gets his meds silently by an intravenous PUSH...

Don’t feel too sad about this, though...
With modern technology, including holograms, that can be projected directly onto the retina...
Or simply enjoyed on a computer screen, or on film...
Jim would be able to think himself into a little 3D avatar and go do or redo anything and all the things he wants to do at any given time.

Including clearing his name... or his father’s name...

And with digital environments, he can be sitting stone still in one place...
and be automatically transported wherever in the Universe he wants to be!

In the world of virtual reality,
the Dream and Reality become one.

And there’s more...
But first a little parable from the ancient Chinese:

Once there was a man who fell asleep and dreamed he was a cat... who went to sleep and dreamed he was a man... And when he awoke, the man no longer knew if he was a man dreaming that he was a cat, or a cat dreaming he was a man!

So here’s what I think :

I THINK JIM’S CAT DREAMED THE WHOLE DARN THING!

And that’s my last wild spec about Push, Nevada! I promise.

*Pshew!*

Hope you enjoyed it and that it didn’t spoil anything for you. *L*

Yours ‘til the Sahara Falls! !Wink

This is me, just as I am, now and forever...
