Just thought of something...if the "Always use zip code" stamp was meant to make this more authentic for a certain time period, the computer typed label on the envelope pretty much negates that. Maybe there's more to the zip codes than we originally thought.

Is it possible Minot was chosen because of its zip code? Like the numbers will help us solve some part of this puzzle?

I'm headed to go running...I'll think about it some more. I think better when I run.

Avery Dennison (label makers) started in 1935 making self-adhesive labels.

Typewriters have been around since i can remember.

Put the two together and you get a professional mailing label. Though someone might want to check to see if that font was available for our time period.

Got my letter in the mail as well. Mr. Green

Question:
How did everyone open their envelopes? I don't want to damage mine.

HA... non related, but on the Avery Dennison History page, in 1974 there's a reference to a self adhesive stamp. (stamped New York whoo hoo!)

I and my friends opened normally. It opened easily without ripping or damage.

Wow. I've been away from the game longer than expected. Just got my letter today and it jumpstarted me right back in. Thank god too. This week sucked.

Anyhow, everything on my letter checks out with everyone else's. Watermark, stars, etc.

Excellent feeling of "nailed it" when I pulled the letter from the mailbox.

Also, there is saturn again. I have to say that is almost surely our moon and not Enceladus or (as of last month) Titan. Oh well. Exciting none the less.

Agreed on the moon

Hmm. I'm sending from Sweden and we don't have zip codes either. Also, a stamp on the letter said "Always use zip code". Hope it won't be a problem. D:

Always use Zip Code was an American program promoting the "new" idea of Zip Codes for mail sorting here. If you're mailing from Sweden or anywhere outside the U.S., all the Post Office would care about is that you use the Zip Code of the addressee you're sending to... not that you don't have a U.S. Zip in Sweden. Your own country's postal codes should work just fine for them mailing back to you, even if the form isn't formatted for international codes/addresses (this is a VINTAGE reproduction, which didn't allow much for int'l mailing).

You can always stick a Post-It with your full address on your application as a supplement to make your int'l address perfectly clear.

I see nothing on the form prohibiting international players (why would they?), so go for it! And I still don't think it's "too late" — the Flynn Lives ARG has been going on for a long time and one can still sign up there. You may not get really old mailing/swag opportunities (or you might!), but I doubt a ARG-maker would "shut off" new applicants this far out since the game's just starting.

I find it comical that they used an American flag stamp with more stars. Has anyone counted the stars including the ones on the stamp (7)?

Always Use Zip

The envelopes all have stamps on them, not business-generated impressions that are metered.

When I worked for the Postal Service (early 70s) till when I moved on, anything going through the mail had to have a stamp and was then processed with the Postal Service origination mtered impression.

Even in the 70s I recall seeing the "Always Use Zip Code" mark, and unless the Postal Service has changed dramatically, they're VERY particular with the mark that goes over the stamp.

Unless things have changed, the cancelation mark that goes over the stamp (so it may not be reused) is part of the same machine that "dates" and places the town/city of origin on it.

I would be really surprised if things have changed to the degree that a business can dictate the cancellation message on the stamp.

As regards non-US addresses on the coupon, unless you live somewhere that calls for $20 per ounce postage. I'd just place a sticker over the coupon and fill out your correct mailing address.

As was mentioned at some point somewhere on Unfiction, Team JJ is trying to get a handle on how effective their viral campaign is, and whomever is picking up mail in Minot has probably been told that when the initial wave come through to not bother responding until a breakeven number of coupons have been received.

At that point, it would have been interesting to know how many people were involved with going through each coupon, verifying whether the astronaut names had already been selected, logging them in, and then sending back notices of prospective candidacy to responders.

But now that the word is out, and the floodgates have been open, I'm sure they will be calling on more staff to "man/woman" the command center.

Interesting, could you ever have imagined you would grow up, put in your years in school, have a significant other, hold down a job, produce a set of your very own rug rats, and then respond to a 60s-looking coupon for popsicles/candy requiring you to go through the maze (like some lab rat), and then mail it, eagerly awaiting a response?

If for nothing else, that's sorta cool, snail mail is GOOD for something. It reminds me of when I sent in to NBC in the 60s for my "Man from U.N.C.L.E." membership card application. My mom ended up throwing out the monthly bulletins eventually, but I still have that card (which I think would be cool if Team JJ were to print a unique RP card).
