For all who want to count the stars on the envelope too, the letter asks in the Space Challenge! "HOW MANY STARS ARE ON THIS PAGE?" Not how many stars are on the entire mailing. Sorry not yelling, the caps are for continuity.

The stars on the back of the envelope kind of have the same spacing as the body of the letter, but I don't get anything useful. (yet)

Well, I got my letter today, too. I had sent in my application with completed maze the day after the printout was discovered.

Now I'm wondering what would happen if I counted the stars and mailed in my answer to the challenge? Hmm...

Doug

FWIW: My letter arrived on 7/16, which is the anniversary of the launch of the Apollo 11 mission, during which man first walked on the moon.

Pretty much the same as the others, but I've now updated my site with the scan of my own letter and envelope.

Thanks again to Burn for use of your letter scan until mine arrived.

Hmm. I'm sending from Sweden and we don't have zip codes either. Also, a stamp on the letter said "Always use zip code". Hope it won't be a problem. D:

Always use Zip Code was an American program promoting the "new" idea of Zip Codes for mail sorting here. If you're mailing from Sweden or anywhere outside the U.S., all the Post Office would care about is that you use the Zip Code of the addressee you're sending to... not that you don't have a U.S. Zip in Sweden. Your own country's postal codes should work just fine for them mailing back to you, even if the form isn't formatted for international codes/addresses (this is a VINTAGE reproduction, which didn't allow much for int'l mailing).

You can always stick a Post-It with your full address on your application as a supplement to make your int'l address perfectly clear.

I see nothing on the form prohibiting international players (why would they?), so go for it! And I still don't think it's "too late" — the Flynn Lives ARG has been going on for a long time and one can still sign up there. You may not get really old mailing/swag opportunities (or you might!), but I doubt a ARG-maker would "shut off" new applicants this far out since the game's just starting.

Yep, that would be weird if international players wouldn't be able to participate. Oh well, I can't wait for the letter. Very Happy

I got my letter today; did embarrassing happy-dance in my PJs. I'm now known as 'Lunar Module Pilot V' to some Abrams intern with a serious case of carpal tunnel. Nothing new to add, other than Captain "Coop" Cooper's expression makes me vaguely uncomfortable, like he slipped something in my morning cup of (Irish) coffee.

watermark on envelope too

Got my letter just like everyone else. Mine also has a watermark on the envelope.. I'll have to try to read it in better light.
Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this as well.
----------edit
nevermind, it appears to be the same as the letter.

Re: Always Use Zip
Cancellation Mark

The envelopes all have stamps on them, not business-generated impressions that are metered.

When I worked for the Postal Service (early 70s) till when I moved on, anything going through the mail had to have a stamp and was then processed with the Postal Service origination metered impression.

Even in the 70s I recall seeing the "Always Use Zip Code" mark, and unless the Postal Service has changed dramatically, they're VERY particular with the mark that goes over the stamp.

Unless things have changed, the cancelation mark that goes over the stamp (so it may not be reused) is part of the same machine that "dates" and places the town/city of origin on it.

I totally agree with you on the cancellation mark. How can JJ and crew tell the USPS what cancellation mark to use on their mail?? I have never seen any business ask for a certain mark to be used and the USPS comply. I'm sure that they would do anything though for a price.. Very interesting though!!!

It seems that Pictorial and Special Cancellations were meant for specific occasions or short term use. Since the USPS has used this stamp in the past, i don't see why they couldn't use it again.

This is the Wikipedia link, but the BB code doesn't like parentheses in a URL:

Funny enough, this site (OOG but related) http://www.alwaysusezipcode.com/ discusses the strange things that are mailed through the USPS. Sometimes their experiments were questioned, but the postal workers seemed to be light hearted and helped out when they could.
