Interesting, could you ever have imagined you would grow up, put in your years in school, have a significant other, hold down a job, produce a set of your very own rug rats, and then respond to a 60s-looking coupon for popsicles/candy requiring you to go through the maze (like some lab rat), and then mail it, eagerly awaiting a response?

If for nothing else, that's sorta cool, snail mail is GOOD for something. It reminds me of when I sent in to NBC in the 60s for my "Man from U.N.C.L.E." membership card application. My mom ended up throwing out the monthly bulletins eventually, but I still have that card (which I think would be cool if Team JJ were to print a unique RP card).

This made me smile. And you're right. This is why snail mail is great. The anticipation-reward factor can't be replicated by email.

This is probably me being a stickler here, but the popsicle in the bottom left next to the "Super Speedflier Fleet" is a Bomb Pop and not a Rocket Pop...

Let us stickle together! ^_____^

That would be awesome if Blue Bunny partnered with Bad Robot and made a Rocket Pop brand of icicles!

I just got mine today and it had a message on the back that someone has already submitted an application with my nickname on it. WTF?! Who is posing as AbramsFollower? I will hunt you down. Now I have to send in another application with a "unique" nickname......

Has anyone tried applying the golden ratio to a scan of the mail? It might reveal something.

Just a suggestion for your astronaut name

I you haven't already sent in your coupon to RP, I think that it is quite evident that names such as Abrams, Abrahms, J.J., Slusho, Lost, Alias, Fringe, et. al Idea , and all combinations of that sort are going to be returned, I mean sure, with the first hundred Slusho applications, they probably stuck them in a... Arrow

wait for it... Arrow

fish bowl Razz and had a drawing to determine who gets to be Sergeant, Commander, Private, Captain--whatever--Slusho, and the rest got bounced back.

Sure if you want waste a stamp, send in your coupon as Private Dharma, or whatever it is, but don't whine when you get it kicked back that that particular name is taken.

Pick a name, like a user name that "you" thought of...I know this is going out on a limb, but rather than Captain James Tiberius Kirk, How about using some form of your REAL name, unless it happens to be an oddball name like John/Mary Smith/Jones.

Re: Always Use Zip
Cancellation Mark

The envelopes all have stamps on them, not business-generated impressions that are metered.

When I worked for the Postal Service (early 70s) till when I moved on, anything going through the mail had to have a stamp and was then processed with the Postal Service origination metered impression.

Even in the 70s I recall seeing the "Always Use Zip Code" mark, and unless the Postal Service has changed dramatically, they're VERY particular with the mark that goes over the stamp.

Unless things have changed, the cancelation mark that goes over the stamp (so it may not be reused) is part of the same machine that "dates" and places the town/city of origin on it.

I totally agree with you on the cancellation mark. How can JJ and crew tell the USPS what cancellation mark to use on their mail?? I have never seen any business ask for a certain mark to be used and the USPS comply. I'm sure that they would do anything though for a price.. Very interesting though!!!

It seems that Pictorial and Special Cancellations were meant for specific occasions or short term use. Since the USPS has used this stamp in the past, i don't see why they couldn't use it again.

This is the Wikipedia link, but the BB code doesn't like parentheses in a URL:

Funny enough, this site (OOG but related) http://www.alwaysusezipcode.com/ discusses the strange things that are mailed through the USPS. Sometimes their experiments were questioned, but the postal workers seemed to be light hearted and helped out when they could.

~Marj ^_^

Checked that last link you posted, and on the first page was this pic:

It's slightly possible that the Always Use Zipcode could just be a postal coincidence, though I'm not entirely ready to give up on that possible hint yet. Smile

Zip coderelevance and coupon deadline?

Concerning the "Always Use Zip Code" cancellation mark, the following sites state:

http://www.wysiwicked.com/encyclopedia/index.php?title=Cancellation_(mail)
Modern United States cancellations commonly include the date and post office location where the stamps were mailed, in addition to lines or bars designed to cover the stamp itself. The term "postal marking" sometimes is used to refer specifically to the part that contains the date and posting location, although the term often is used interchangeably with "cancellation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postal_marking
Although it is technically possible to query postal services to find out what kinds of postal markings they use, in practice they do not seem to know about all the kinds of handstamps used in their offices, and previously unknown types of postal markings, both early and modern, regularly come to light.

"If" the "Always Use Zip Code" cancellation mark really does have some meaning, it may be why the mail was picked up at a P.O. Box at one branch (58701) and mailed from another (58702). Just speculating, but if the phrase has some IG tie, it is conceivable that Team JJ could have ascertained what cancellation marks were going to be in effect for the initial duration of the viral campaign, and decided that 58702 had a phrase that they could use and tie into the game, whereas maybe the 58701 (or the other zips for Minot) had some other phrase or mark they couldn't make work.

Additionally, since the university is in the area, it's not inconceivable that a select number of students who were going to be in town for the summer could be hired for this project. (There would be little that they would need to know other than open incoming mail, enter prospective "astronaut" names into a database, confirm that such had not already been chose, and mail out letters to respondents.)

IF that's the case it would seem that there would be a time frame for mailing/receiving RP related booty—also, we don't know what the budget for this part of the campaign is. They may have allocated a run of 2,000 mailings. (The person who stated on this forum that they'd worked for the paper company could probably weigh in with thoughts on that aspect, if he/she had knowledge of such.)

So, if you haven't mailed your coupon yet, and you want a tangible piece of the campaign, I'd suggest mailing now, rather than wait until the fall semester begins.

FWIW, here's the zips (I'd posted these before, but not descriptive, i.e. the university and the AFB):

58701 Minot
58702 Minot
58703 Minot
58704 Minot AFB
58705 Minot AFB
58707 Minot State University

The general consensus is we should wait for "Coop" to let us know.

Someone already sent an eamil reply, and got the standard "Away" message.
And the letter does not tell us what to do.
